As she listened to the story of his family she began to feel childish for complaining about her situation. At least none of her relatives had been murdered to her knowledge, sure, daddy took off with her brother or sister never to be seen again but she hadn’t heard of his death or anything of the sort. She lowered her eyes feeling ashamed of herself for going on as she did when he had survived a true tragedy. “I am sorry….for your loss.” She responded delicately, not wanting to sound as though she pitied him but just as though she was sad about what had occurred. The world could be so cruel it amazed even her at times. “I am sure your mother is quite proud of you now though.” She added with a smile. “You have helped me greatly and I am sure she sees that.” She giggled gently, thinking more of the irony than the humor. “I guess we both have daddy issues then.”

“Mother…Gaia?” Though she was able to sound smart and at times grasp difficult concepts this was not something she had any knowledge of. She hadn’t ever enquired into how the earth came to be, it just wasn’t something she thought of often but now she found herself interested. She blushed at the mention of love, for whatever reason this concept had continuously followed her no matter where she had roamed. “I am frightened…” She whispered. “I don’t want to end up like my mother with a broken heart and eyes full of tears all the time. I also don’t want to hurt anyone.” With this she looked down at her hooves. “Do you really think someone will accept me into their life in that way?”

Karloff smiled. "She knows, she understands, and forgives. I faced my demons long ago. And when you do, you shall find peace too." He purred gently, the sound thrumming in his throat.

His voice was soft, full of emotion as he quoted the story he had committed to memory so long ago. The story that Solieanna had told him:

" "Did you know... the moon and the sun are the mother and father of the sky?"

"Father Sun and Mother Moon were the first. Who created them, we do not know, but we do know that they created all of us. They desperately wanted children, but were never quite successful. Instead, they created."

"Father Sun thought of warm and strength, and from his fire he pulled melted rock, which settled and became our earth. But it was little more than a rock- no life would grow on it. Mother Moon thought of gentleness and compassion, and she pulled water from the inky sky and her own glimmering face, covering the rocky earth with this bringer of life. Then, together, Mother Moon and Father Sun worked to create a seed. A single seed which they planted in the middle of a grand valley."

"There was little more they could do but wait, as all parents must, to see if their children would prosper. Months passed, and the rainy season came and went, and yet this single seed did not grow amidst the barren wasteland. Father Sun began to grow impatient, and thought that perhaps they had failed yet again, when Mother Moon lay a steadying hand on his shoulder and pointed at the earth. There, far beneath them, a small speck of green sprung from the ground. It was an oak seedling, the first oak, the Great Oak that can be found in the Hidden Glen deep within the forest. Years passed, and Great Oak grew large and strong, and from it sprung a daughter, the Green Goddess, who is in turn our mother for she is the earth below us and trees around us. Mother Moon and Father Sun watched as she sat upon the ground beneath the Great Oak."

" 'What is wrong my child?' Mother Moon asked, wondering why her daughter would not move from under the tree. 'I am stuck Mother, I need a traveling companion, for I am lonely and afraid to travel the world alone.' At this, Mother Moon thought long and hard. Finally, she let out a long sigh, and from her swirling breath she created a son, Zephyr, the Wind God. On his shoulders he bore his sister, the Green Goddess, and together the traveled the world, spreading life and breath. Soon the earth and sea were filled with green growth, and it seemed that Mother Moon and Father Sun had created a lush paradise. However, the Green Goddess, or as some call her "Mother Gaia", grew lonely..."

"Walking along the beach one day, she came upon what we know today as clay. Sitting done, she became fascinated with the shapes she could create with this clay. Soon she created many fantastic creatures, from dolphins to birds, horses and even man. She filled each of them with a seed of life, and her brother filled them with breath. In a great surge of magic, Mother Gaia's creations sprang into being, and she was never lonely again, for her children grew and prospered, and now inhabit every corner of the world. And this Karl, is how the daughter of Mother Moon and Father Sun created us all... with love, dedication, creativity, and a little bit of magic." "

He closed his eyes, remembering when she had told him that story. And one day he had planned on telling that story to his child, or to someone as lost as he was.

He smiled at her, "Love comes when you can accept yourself. I can love Ailbhe, because I do not hate myself. Once you face your demons, you to can accept and love. And one day create a family as a testament to that love."

Though she hadn’t any idea what her demons were precisely other than her appearance and perhaps some unresolved familial issues she knew Karloff to be correct. Some piece deep within her agreed with him but she was still hesitant, afraid of what it may entail and what she may learn when coming up against her demons. “Peace.” She murmured. How she wished to be able to live life without feeling a great weight upon her shoulders, could such a thing ever be possible for her? It had to be.

As he told the story of creation she looked from him to the bright round moon hovering in the sky. She hadn’t ever thought there was so much work put into this world. Though she wasn’t sure if the story was the actual truth or not the concepts still reached her. They had all been created with love, dedication, creativity and magic. Did that mean even those who looked the way she did? She was silent through the entire story, soaking up as much as she could and turning it into wisdom she would use later. “That is an amazing story.” She commented after he had finished. “I can see why it means so much to you.” She would keep the story within her and pass it on just as he had to anyone who may need it.

Perhaps he was right that if she hated herself love would never find her. Even so she found it hard to lover herself when all she saw were flames and eerie green eyes staring back at her. Maybe someday she would be able to look past all of that, she knew none of this would come to her in one evening of listening. “Do you have a family? I mean, with your mate?” She asked quietly.

Karloff sighed as he breathed, "Peace comes in many ways." How true that had been. He had accepted peace in love, in death, and even in fighting. It was complicated and understanding wasn't always so understanding at first.

"Not yet. No kittens yet. It is our hope though, we have a basket we've adopted. His mother, very much a tortured soul." He paused delicately, "I hope things are easier for the one within the basket, easier than it has been for us." He purred lightly.

‘Peace comes in many ways.’ Though his words didn’t make sense to her she stored them in the back of her mind. She was uncertain whether or not she would ever find peace in her messed up life but she supposed Lady Fortuna would reveal that sooner or later. So many questions needed to be answered before she could settle down and breathe easily. “Peace.” She murmured.

She smiled gently at his mention of ‘kittens’ she hadn’t ever heard it put that way but judging by his appearance it made sense. “I am sure you both will be blessed with kittens, you would make a wonderful father.” The last word had her wincing gently, what she wouldn’t give to have a father. “I think you have come along to give that basket what it needs, you are a miracle. I am sure the one within will have a wonderful life filled with your kindness and wisdom.”

Karloff blushed, "Thank you. I hope you're right. Can't help but doubt myself, but it only ends once. Everything else is just progress." He smiled as he watched the stars again. "You'll make a great mother one day when it's time. You'll be okay, don't worry." He said before she could respond. "You'll love them, you've seen the mistakes made and you won't make those. You'll make different mistakes but you'll understand better than your parents did."

He looked at her, "The future is always bright, even if it seems distant. Because we can always hope for it." He laughed, "Sorry, I've gotten a little...melodramatic."

She listened to him but became lost in her own contemplation when he mentioned she would make a good mother. She hadn’t ever really thought of having foals, deeming it as something unattainable and frightening. There were so many things that could go wrong when raising young ones; she would never want them to suffer as she had. Her attention turned back on him and she smiled gently. “Thank you.” She responded simply, not wishing to unload personal baggage on someone she had only just met. “It is nice to have the light of optimism shining on one’s life; I thank you for your uplifting words.”

She shook her head. “No, you are correct it does not help to dwell on only darkness for the future has yet to arrive. Perhaps as my sister has said I should relax a little and just go with the flow of the world, I never know where it will take me.”

"Isn't that the beauty of it though? Not knowing what the world has in store for you. One moment, you're the saddest you've ever been--questioning your humanity and the next moment you've found forever in the eyes of someone else." Karloff smiles wistfully thinking of Ailbhe.

"It's how it happens sometimes, when you're not looking for something you find it. But at some point, you come to terms with yourself and realize you don't have to be anything that what you want." He stands quietly, listening to the night wind blowing.
