However, his lips had only met hers for a moment before his head erupted with noise. In his mind's eye he could see himself standing in the rain, embracing someone he couldn't properly see. And he heard a voice - a feminine voice - speaking softly to him. I want you to promise that you will never let go. Another eruption of noise, and the scene in his head showed a cloud of smoke. He saw himself fall to the wet dirt, the figure he'd been embracing holding a still-smoldering pistol.
By this point, back in reality, Pierce had somehow slid out from under Alice, falling into the pond. For several moments, he just lay there, staring up at the canopy of trees. He'd been trying hard not to think of that night...he had almost put it entirely out of his mind. Maybe that's the real reason he'd been avoiding any intimate exchanges. He was back in the here and now, but he had lost the will to move. So he remained on his back in the shallow water, and for the first time, his face had no trace of a grin, nor a raised eyebrow.
