Tony looked ruffled, shaking his head.

"No, no, nothing literary is printed irrevocably on my body," he said stubbornly, leaning on the counter because he was beginning to notice a pleasant light headedness. He eyed Ever stubbornly. "And anyway, there's nothing particularly surprising about someone having a tattoo... I was a typical teenager... and tattoos were 'cool'."

He cleared his throat, rubbing his arm thoughtfully.

"Haven't you considered getting one? I mean, what would you get if you picked one now?" He was trying to deviate the topic a bit, so it would move away from his own tattoo and maybe into a conversation about them in general. Crafty, he thought.

"Um. No." It was laughing but genuine, both of his eyebrows raised as he looked up at Tony. No, Ever'd never really thought about a tattoo.

"I mean, not that I don't enjoy them, but..." He cleared his throat, tipped back the last of his drink, and then set it back down on the edge of the table, delicately. That had been a lot of booze very fast, especially for someone as skinny as him. He'd be wise to eat more pizza.

"...but I generally prefer them on other people." Just a twitch of something teasing, flirting in it. He couldn't help it.

Tony frowned. Maybe times had changed more than he thought. When he was younger, everyone wanted a tattoo. It was the cool think, to get ink, as far as he knew. Or maybe that was just the circle he had been running in. Or maybe they had all just been idiots. Both were probably true, now that he was thinking about it.

Tony looked perplexed. He got uncomfortable and seemed to finally pick up on the tones Ever sometimes carried in his words. He wasn't sure what to think about that, though, blaming the booze.

Maybe he was hearing things.

"Well... I was planning on having mine removed. I have been for a while, but I've never gotten around to it." He got himself a bit more to drink, though he noted a wobble.

"Let me see it, before you do." It wasn't exactly a question and wasn't exactly an order, either: it came with hopeful eyes and Ever's cup held out, clutched absently between both hand. And a twitch of a smile on his mouth, still with that teasing edge behind it.

"I mean, all that pain to get the thing, you might as well show it off some, right?" Tattoos were definitely still cool -- it was just that Ever didn't have the creativity to indulge in his own. He'd stick to looking. As much as he could.

Tony laughed.

"Didn't you see it when we were in that dream world? With all the lava and the... uh... giant cat." He shook his head. It sounded crazy, and he had been there. It sounded like something a drunk person would say, which was oddly fitting.

"I guess we were busy with the trying not to die thing. Ah. Well. Maybe I'll show you it sometime. It's not like it's any place particularly embarrassing. I just... I don't know. I told myself librarians don't have them I guess. That sounds stupid. Does that sound stupid to you?"

He got a bit verbal when he had some drinks in him, and his filter between thought and mouth tended to flicker on and off. Mostly off, and then completely so after he passed his limit. Not that he intended on that tonight.

He reached for another piece of pizza, since so far he had been drinking more than eating.

"Yeah, that sounds really stupid." Ever's grin was sudden and unrelenting: it took the edge off of his comment without actually changing the meaning. He wasn't exactly joking around -- he couldn't for the life of him figure out why Tony wouldn't just show, if it wasn't somewhere embarrassing...

"...I wasn't exactly looking at your tattoos when we were there..." It came out slower, with a shake of his head. Let Tony read that as he would.

Tony pouted at him helplessly when he confirmed that the explanation was stupid. He knew it, but he didn't need to be told! Still, he found the candor funny and started to laugh. Which was a bad idea, as he now wouldn't be able to stop finding everything worthy of a laugh.

Once he got control of himself for the moment, face still split in a broad, enthusiastic smile, he pointed his cup at Ever.

"Well, it might sound stupid, but that doesn't make it any less true."

He laughed again when Ever joked about not looking at his tattoo while they were in the dream world. That had been a joke, right? Because it sounded more like he was flirting, which was what it had sounded like earlier, but that had to be booze. Did this have to be the booze too?

"Well if you weren't looking at that, where were you looking? In the middle of flying lava rocks and those damn water... spouts... and all that. I mean, that was probably a good place to focus. That, or my rippling muscles," he couldn't say that with a straight face, "hey, wait, you're not... uh. Oop."
PostPosted: Thu Mar 31, 2011 9:13 am

Yes, Ever was as 'oop' as a three dollar bill, and in his cups he grinned shamelessly up at Tony about it. Another time, during hours, when he felt less good about things, then Ever might have been embarrassed. The keyword being might.

"Rippling muscles..." It came out laughing, still teasing, fingers sliding up through the tousled mess of his hair.

"Well, I mean, I guess compared to me but..." That wasn't saying much. He was still laughing, not quite answering the question, but Tony was probably smart enough to put two and two together. Eventually.

Tony blushed slightly. He was still sober enough to miss the filter from his brain to his mouth, though what was said was said, and even with focus and being aware of it now he'd still probably just let all his thoughts spill out in a flood of accidental, and mostly likely awkward, conversation.

"Well, we'll both have to hit the gym, then, because my rippling muscles are entirely sarcastic. And if yours aren't made of much else, then we'll both be screwed if ever we run into another giant flaming cat." He shook his head, wondering if he should expound on his use of the word flaming.

Now he was worried that he was on the wrong track, getting no confirmation, or was on the right track and had been completely oblivious up to now. That left a lot of room for him to mess things up, either through an expert application of retrospect or by fumbling over some words in the near future.

"Okay, so, now, uh," he got another drink, noticing they were making good progress, "I mean, don't take this the wrong way or anything but, like, are you. Um. Flirting with me? Or is my ego making me think I'm the most attractive man in the world, and all around me must fall to my charms? Er. Imagining it, I mean."

He'd just tipped the glass up to his mouth when Tony spoke -- and the question left Ever choking and spluttering and downing too much of his drink all at once. He'd be alright after a moment, other than the mess on the front of his shirt, red eyes and a slow creeping of something flustered. That was very blunt. And very naive. And Ever wasn't quite sure how to answer it.

"Um. Sorry. I mean. If it makes you uncomfortable." And abruptly his easy carelessness went away. He didn't really want to piss his boss off and get tossed out on his a**. "I don't always...I mean it just kind of...well, you are fairly..."

Tony laughed as Ever sputtered his drink. Normally he didn't laugh at things like that: or tried very hard not to, but he was also usually the ones doing them. He couldn't help himself. He laughed and watched as Ever turned a slight red.

Had he said something wrong? All he did was ask a simple question, and they were friends. Maybe it had been rude. Maybe he was making it up, and now Ever didn't know what to do with him.

That wasn't what he wanted to do...

"Oh, no, I wasn't uncomfortable. I mean. Well. A little. But... I... what? No. Uhm." Now he was turning red. He made to take a hearty drink from his glass. And his turn to spill on himself in his haste. He had thought the cup was a little closer than it had been.

At that, at least, he started laughing. They matched now, at least, in wasted booze and awkwardness.

Ever slumped down to perch on the edge of the counter, his own cup settled crookedly on one knee, patting at the mess down the front of his shirt. No amount of poking or prodding was likely going to get that cleaned up, so after a moment, he gave up on it and focused instead on Tony. Watching him out of the corner of his eyes.

He was still a little flustered, trying to decide what that meant exactly. Damnit, Ever was used to people who gave impossibly clear signals. He fidgeted.

"Um. Well, sorry anyway." Except he really wasn't. "Just say something if I say something stupid."

Tony scratched the back of his head in thought, thinking things were mostly settled. He decided to sit down on the floor, leaning back on the counter. It would prevent any more spills, hopefully. He looked up at Ever, sighing.

"Sorry if I made things weird. I do that a lot, I think. I don't mean to, I just... don't think, I suppose. Well, I think, obviously, but... uh... well. In any case, I've no problem with you, you know. Uhm... I'm not, myself, though when I was a kid I got up to... many things." He laughed and shook his head again, wobbling. He hadn't noticed how much alcohol he had taken in, nor how quickly.

But he was certainly feeling it.

"It figures, the one day I decide to bring my car in to work is the one day I also decide to get drunk." He grinned broadly, looking devious. Not that he planned on going out and driving, but rather he knew he was going to have to stay at the library all night. It was going to be an interesting work day for him tomorrow, considering his day started in the morning rather than the afternoon, like Ever.

Ever grinned back at him, helplessly -- the expression was just infectious -- and sank slowly down into a crouch in front of Tony, his drink dangling between his knees. It was an awkward perch. He wobbled and shifted for a while before he finally settled in, licking his lips and considering just how drunk Tony was.

"You're smashed." It was decisive, came with a hint of laughter behind it, and Ever set down his own drink so he wouldn't fall and spill it everywhere. "Definitely don't drive home. Feel better, though?"

"I am not smashed!" Tony protested, though he didn't move from being slumped back on the counter. He didn't want to move, wobble or fall over completely, then lose his argument.

Anyway, there was some pride on the line here.

"I used to drink circles around my friends. And I could certainly put you under the table before I got anywhere near smashed." He grinned at that, a bit over confident. It was true, he had been rather prolific in his drinking 'back in the day', but now he had a much lower tolerance, and was giving himself far too much credit.

But hey, it was the booze talking.

"I do feel much better. Who knew all your problems could be solved by alcohol? Though, I suppose that's how alcoholics are made." He laughed at that.
