Oh yes...I was the quiet bookworm that people barely noticed, and I was ok with that. I never bothered with their complaints. I think I honestly surprised the librarian when I read both Gone with the Wind and the Hobbit, plus LotR in my 6th or 7th grade year.

I haven't gotten any harassment. Partly because I've never gone out of my way to piss many people off and the fact I read at appropreate times. I sit with a great group of people at lunch, and they would notice me reading, but probably say nothing of it.

(yes i know. nerdiest thing ever) but in long terms (no on e wanted to listen to me talk about my book) it was about a french nun, A Computer repairwoman, and a huge Soviet mystery. .... yeah.. Even my Teachers bug me about reading, (even when im technically two years ahead of everyone in my class) gonk

Hard to imagine that my obsession started with the Barbie doll of Scarlet in her honeymoon gown. Now I even have playing cards for goodness sake! I swear that if I see something of GWTW I will start drooling. I just wish the DVD had chosen a better cover. I still have my deluxe edition of the movie on VHS and haven't gotten it on DVD yet. I didn't start reading Tolkien until much later though.

My groups of friends were all bookworms sweatdrop . If you had a book in you hand, you couldn't read it peacefully untill your book got pass around a least once. I got in trouble a lot for reading in class too. Especially in Language Arts which I never understood xd . Other then that, well some people didn't make fun of us and the ones that did got a book dunked on their head xd .

Back in Elementary school, (even now sometimes) I used to get so absorbed in a book that I would literally not hear anything-- once the fire alarm went off and I didn't notice. Thus, it was natural for people to try and get my attention while I was reading.
Add the fact that I read very fast... And you get people that wonder, "How the hell do you read something that bad, that fast?" My response? "I read it so fast that it seems like somethings actually happening."

Everyday someone either tries to make fun of me or catch my attetbtion; I just tune them out. They're usually asking hw can I read so fast, or what is the book's title when they can clearly see it, or ask what it's about. Basically just nonsense like that saying I talk like I'm "educated" because I can actually write a poem with a verse with like..."the words flutter in my ears" or something like that; they're just being extremely ignorant... rolleyes

My sister is the only one who bugs me about reading now, probably cause she's the only one who knows how to get me unabsored.
In grade school I got yelled at all the time for reading under my desk, but I was never mocked untill midlle school. I didn't have much friends really so when I did read around my friends they got aggravated ^_^'. Now all my friends are bookworms, it so fun. We'll have a party and then someone pulls out a book and we all grab our own and just start reading for an hour or two. It;s fun to have friends who don't get mad when you read in front of them.
Side question: Anyone ever try to sneak a read at family functions and get yelled at?

I don't remember ever being made fun of for reading. Though it probably contributes to my overall oddness, which I have been made fun of for. ^.^;;
I know my brother has said that his friends make fun of him for doing so sometimes, but not in a really mean way.
Though it's never been directed at me, I hate it when people say people who read 'have no life' or 'have too much time on their hands'. People always seem to say that whenever people have a hobby and it irks the hell out of me. >.<

I used to get that all the time but I ended up putting a stop to it. One day when I was reading during Free Period outside some random person went up and snatched my book away. Of course I instantly got upset and asked it for them back. After teasing me quite and ripping one of the pages I ended up punching them right in the face. Gave them a bloody nose and I I didn't get in trouble because I was "defending myself agaisnt harrasment". After that no one really bothered me about my books. If they do I give them one of my evil stares. ninja

:SCREAM: THEY RIPPED THE PAGES OUT!!! Those jerks! Good for you for standing up for yourself. I don't think I ever could. Of course, if I ever find the kid who ripped the page out of my one manga, I'LL BREAK HIS NECK!! That was my favorite picture in the whole manga. Fujin Oni I used to get that all the time but I ended up putting a stop to it. One day when I was reading during Free Period outside some random person went up and snatched my book away. Every day during my Teacher's Student Aid class (for my last yeard 8th grade Eng. Teacher - I'm pretty much a Librarian for the class. whee )) I see the 8th graders tossing books around, stepping on them, and gah! Just drives me insane. I wanna go hit them upside the head and make them book it back in the right places neatly and gently.

No, well, yes. But only light teasing from my friends and classmates. Like people always ask me why I read so muich, and I just smile at them and stuff. I have been made fun of once or twice, but I don't let it bother me. Let them think what they want to, why should I care?
