The original battle tech takes place from the first and second succession wars which was 2786 and 2830 respectively. The clan invasion happens in 3049. The invasion was essentially over in 3052 with the truce of Tukayyid.

However, there is penty of history and lore going back to 2400 but I don't think there's a lot of mech usage then. Not too sure though.

I guess I'll start hunting around for books with data regarding the Clan invasion, seeing as that's the era the most iconic (at least to me) 'Mechs are introduced: Mad Cat, Vulture and Bushwhacker.

If anything, try to find stuff on Aleksandr Kerensky too. He essentially started the clans after the second succession war when the Star League fell apart.

Battletech has different rules expansions for mechs for each period as far as I know. This should help you navigate what rulebooks you might be interested in. Other than that, I believe the Clan Wars take place in 3050.
All of the rule books are available in PDF format at a reduced price. I wonder if this means a lot of them are pirated online somewhere.

The downloads page also has a crapton of samples from books, and at the very bottom a bunch of the quick start rules for different books so you can try them out a bit before you buy them. Also available is the Battletech Universe pdf which I think comes with the starter set?

I'll get to it when I get to it. Maybe I can track some down in Hollywood in August. ninja

Actually, the original game took place in 3025.

The reading material from the boxed set puts it as early as 3015, though for the most part it just says "it is the 31st century"

Well, I think that the Battletech game is in great need of an update, combining itself with Mechwarrior finally. It just seems to me that the Inner Sphere has a long way to go to catch back up, technology-wise, seeing as how almost all Clan Weapons are better at a weapon v. weapon level. Either way, I think I'll stick with my weird-yet-unique 'Mechs. :p

Tech levels really depend on the year the game is taking place in. From what I've gathered post Clan invasion everybody has Clan tech it seems.

Not true at all. The IS weapons have their own bonuses. The majority of differences in weapons are Clan weapons are lighter. That's really all there is to it. There are plenty of good and very strong IS weapons that are better than the Clan counter parts.

Well, I guess my bias is coming from playing Mech Warrior 4. I think another difference was Clan over-heating more easily as well, but at least they had quite impressive Med Pulse Lasers, once you have enough heat-sinks. razz

I've gotten back into Battletech myself recently. I'm sticking with 3025 technology for now and playing single games until I feel I've got a good grasp of the rules. Once I do I plan to run a campaign using 3025 tech with some of the prototype weapons/equipment found in the Sword and the Dragon starter book. I had a particularly good game Sunday, I actually hit things consistently. Normally the only time I roll high is when I have to avoid shutdown, due to overheating while vainly salvoing my weapons trying to hit something.
