"I'm glad I'm not on the menu," Malodore said, its tone deadpan, then opened its beak in a smile. It was quite pleased at her praise, honestly, and especially glad that half the brains had been successfully re-animated. "Someday, when I have my own laboratory... then I can use better sources."

Riley had never seen a professional laboratory herself, but she was able to imagine the kind of accessibility and resources that would be available to Malodore if it had it's own. The possibilities were staggering - and the amount of time it could spend devoted to it's craft was mind-boggling. It was lucky it was an undead, and didn't have to worry about..

...

Riley's head turned just slightly, as a thought began to occur to her. Curiously, she asked a question that - out of context - would seem like it came out of nowhere.

Malodore, I wonder. May I be so bold as to ask you something personal? She murmured quietly. Do plague doctors ever, ah, naturally expire? I would say die, but, that's rather silly. She chuckled.

Malodore tilted its head to one side - indeed, that was a very odd question! "Ah... we are not immortal, but the undead are long-lived. I'm not certain how old the elders of my family are. Centuries, at least, though none of the very first plague doctors are present. They might have left, of course. We were not told." It shrugged, and the bent back-blades clanged into each other awkwardly with the movement.

"... Oh. I had forgotten." It tried to turn its head to look at the back-blades, as best it could.

Ah. Well, that means that you'll have a great deal of time to spend devoted to your craft once you do get your own laboratory. I'm happy to hear it. She pictured Malodore hunched over a variety of complex looking experiments, lost in thought, and it pleased her. It would be happy. So very happy.

When it's attention turned to it'd back-blades, she realized that she had forgotten as well. Oh. I said I'd help you with those, I'm sorry. It slipped my mind. Their previous conversation had certainly kept her attention and focus, after all. She moved to stand behind it, and lifted a finger to carefully graze a feathered touch down the length of one of the blades. She had no idea how they were connected, or what would hurt it if she tried, so she tilted her head back to look at it. How do you normally fix them?

"Ah... si. I'll need to detach them and hammer..." Its voice trailed off as it realized something. It had agreed to let Riley help without thinking it through... because it would have to take off its coat and shift a few bandages about to get at the blades properly.

... Which meant she would glimpse what it looked like underneath.

... Which was a tremendous cultural taboo.

"I, ah. Will have to... ah... undress, sort of..." it stammered, wringing its hands.

Detach them? Well, that sounded delightfully interesting. Her curiosity reached an all time high at the thought, but she could feel the unease coming off of it in waves, and it deflated her slightly.

Oh. She whispered, failing to keep the disappointment from her quiet voice. She had no personal taboos about the physical body, but she knew it did, and knew that despite her own desires, she never wanted to go against its will.

I understand. You don't want me here when you do it. I.. could go, I suppose? I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable.

"No," Malodore said, sharply, then shook itself, the back-blades clacking against each other once more. "No. Mia famiglia non mi controllo più... and I trust you. Che faccio. Just... just one moment."

It hurried into its sleeping corner, pulling the heavy curtain across the opening. The first thing it removed was its cravat; then it undid the zippers that held on its sleeves, setting them aside with care as their contents clinked. It took a bit of work to get the body of the coat off, sliding the reinforced openings over the skewed back-blades, but after a few minutes the job was done. It kept the rest of its coat on, of course; the belt held it on firmly.

But its torso and arms were now fully visible... or, rather, the bandages wrapped around them were. Without the coat, the shape of the flesh (or lack thereof) beneath was much more apparent, which was what worried Malodore the most. How would Riley react? It was quite practiced at portraying itself as a whole creature.

At least the bit of its anatomy that held the back-blades was accessible now. The blades jutted out from its spine through gaps in the bandages, held in place by the musculature in which they were embedded.

... It could, theoretically, just tug them out now, re-clothe itself, and then go out to Riley.

... But it had said it trusted her...

Taking a deep breath for the calming effect, Malodore straightened its hat (as if that might help somehow) and shoved the curtain aside.

((Ironically, Han's lovely crackart is pretty much exactly what Malodore looks like under the bandages. XD Sans smarmy expression, of course!))

As she had been remarkably quiet, Malodore's quick and sharp response startled her. She blinked in surprise, a bit stunned by the answer, before realizing just a moment too late that it was leaving to go disrobe. She felt a sting of guilt. Had she somehow made it feel obliged to do so for her? It hurt to think of that. She hadn't even had a chance to assure Malodore that she knew it trusted her, and she needed no proof - it was gone before she could put together the thought.

She heard the shuffling of cloth behind the curtain, and a very strong sense of anxiety began to bubble up from within her. It was a strange and unnatural feeling, as she rarely had it. The last thing she ever wanted to do was upset Malodore, in any way. She hoped that this choice it was making would not leave it ill at ease with her. It would break her to have it be uncomfortable with her.

All of these thoughts mulled carefully in her mind as she waited, so that when the curtain was pulled she snapped out of her trance and looked up without thinking. She drunk in the sight of it, her curiosity overpowering even her anxiety for a full moment, before her eyes crinkled fondly and she closed the few steps to stand in front of it. She inhaled deeply, and took it's hand into hers. Her head leaned in slightly, so that her face just barely touched the tip of it's beak.

Sono onorato e commosso da voi. She whispered into it's thoughts, before pulling away. Now how can I help you?

Malodore relaxed a little at Riley's words, enough to open its beak slightly in a small smile. "Mi dispiace, it is just... the compulsion to be properly covered is very strong, especially when others are around. But you are not a patient or an experiment," it said, firmly.

It turned around; the backblades jutted out from Malodore's spine, lancing between strips of bandage. Since their presence displaced the gauze somewhat, bits of Malodore's flesh and bone were visible in the gaps between. "I must release the blades from my grasp. They are a bit... well, I do not have teeth, but I believe they are socketed somewhat like teeth would be, were teeth commonly removable. I do not have to think about keeping them in place, but I do have to think about releasing them..."

That thought was evidently done, as the back-blades wobbled suddenly, falling even more askew; the smallest one fell out altogether, hitting the ground with a dissonant clang! The blunt, 'inside' end had metallic roots, looking very much like the roots of a tooth, slightly tinged with blood. "Can you pull out the other ones?" Malodore said, with effort. It would be easier to have someone else tug them out; it was a challenge for it to focus on releasing the blades and having to remove them at the same time.

Of all the things Riley could have expected from this evening, watching a blade pop out of Malodore's back of it's own accord was most assuredly not on that list. She didn't expect it, even as he explained - so her hand was a split second too late as she reached out to try and catch it before it fell. She cringed at the clang, looking down at the removed blade, before her eyes returned, wide and perhaps a little starstruck, to the others.

That's.. Her voice was an awestruck hush of a sound. Her hand reached out and slid across the next backblade, giving Malodore ample time to realize she was there and ready to remove it. .. Fascinating. She finally finished, breathing the word out. When she thought sufficient time had passed for it to release the blade, she gently, then firmly, slid the blade out of it's socket and removed it. She held it in her hand, and she was captivated in the strictest sense of the word.

I would never have guessed they were removable. Her voice was still a low hush as she reached for the next one. She wanted, so very much, to reach out and touch it's back, but refused to do something that she knew would make it uncomfortable. The urge was there, welling just beneath the surface, and there it remained.

Does it hurt? She pulled the last one out, and holding it clutched against her chest. When you remove them, I mean.

Malodore relaxed again once she was done; it did tug its folded coat up to drape over its shoulders, though, as it felt uncomfortable to have the blade-socket interiors exposed fully to the air. "Grazie... and it hurts a small amount, but not very much. Putting them back in hurts a bit more," it admitted. "But only a little. As much as an injection each time, perhaps."

It turned to face her with a... well, a smile was pretty much a smile, with Malodore, but the rest of its body language illustrated a vague sense of shyness on the plague doctor's part. "It would be very difficult to straighten them out, were they not. Fortunately, thus far only serious impact or Gargantuan's hugs have been able to damage them." Actually, every time since coming to Amityville had been G's fault, but... well.

It strode over to the closet and dug out a small sheet of metal and a small hammer; the metal sheet went on one corner of the sturdy desk, as impact protection. "I must straighten them out. I am no blacksmith, but all of us know how to tend to our own bodies." It gestured for her to lay the first blade on the makeshift 'anvil'.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 8:37 pm

Riley picked up the blade that had fallen on the floor, and carried her newfound treasure over to the metal sheet, and she placed the largest of the blades down against it. The rest she still held against her, perhaps a little too fondly.

Yes, G's hugs do tend to resemble a strong brunt impact. Just be glad he didn't fling you around like a rag doll.. She shuddered as she remembered the sensation of weightlessness. I'm pretty sure I would have survived being thrown into a wall or another person.. but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have hurt. A lot. I was not looking forward to it. She chuckled fondly, shaking her head. Though, it's kind of funny. I really don't think I know anyone who would feel comfortable enough around me to pick me up and fling me around like that. I was under the impression I gave off an aura of do not touch without permission, but that G.. he has no boundaries. It's.. it's something.

Malodore shook its head. "Gargantuan was one of the first students I encountered when I came here. I wouldn't have been in a band, or on stage for the Christmas play if it hadn't been for him..." Though, it had at least gotten to pinch Sandy Claws in the play. That had been vengeance of a kind, right?

It adjusted the first blade, then brought down the hammer. Its strikes weren't very strong, so it would take a while to hammer out the curves in the metal...
PostPosted: Tue Mar 01, 2011 9:14 pm

Riley instantly caught the thread of information she had been previously unaware of. You were in a band? It was surprisingly not that hard to picture Malodore performing in a band, but that could be because if she tried, she could picture Malodore doing almost anything it set it's mind out to do. What did you play?

Riley watched the hammer falls with interest, doing some quick automatic calculations to determined how many hammer strokes Malodore would need at the current rate in order to flatten the blade out. She multiplied this number by the number of blades, and then worked through a comparison of how long it would take her with her known velocity of striking an object. She came to the conclusion that she'd be better suited for the task - but it had told her that it must straighten them out.. perhaps it wouldn't appreciate her mathematical assessment.

A more subtle approach was taken. I could help you with that, if you wanted. I hit pretty hard. She fisted her hands up into balls and assumed a boxing stance. Want to give me a few whacks at it?

"Ah... if you would like," it said, surprised yet grateful for the offer. It handed over the hammer, though naturally it hovered closely. "I assume you observed the metal's behavior sufficiently?"

Once it stepped aside to allow Riley full access to the makeshift 'anvil', it shook its head and chuckled. "As for the band, it was... less of a band and more of a battle. I have some knowledge of stringed instruments, so I opted for the guitar. It was largely used for hitting things." It shrugged. "Not very musical, really."
