It was nice that Neko backed her up, making the story more convincing. When she finished dusting off the den, Riyo moved to the kitchen, grabbing her coffee and moving to the table so she could smother the liquid with cream.
Well, that wasn't a very satisfying answer from either of them. "O...Kay..." But prying would probably have him out on his a**. "Oh, uh..." He had to think about that for a moment. "When she was four years old. I actually have pictures!" Jess admitted proudly and reached into his pocket for his wallet. He had been keeping them on his tour bus in a frame, but now that she was around, he could show them off to all her friends!
Taking out a couple of small photos, he sat them on the table. One of them was a picture of a little girl with short blonde hair, happy red eyes, a huge endearing smile, and vanilla ice cream smeared all over her face. She was looking up at the viewer with the happiest face a child could probably muster. And the other was a picture of a familiar man with a lack of facial hair holding that same girl and waving at the camera, equally as happy as the young child in the picture. It looked like they were on the beach somewhere.
Seeing the pictures as she looked up, Riyo's eyes widened. "Oh God, put those up!" She demanded, reaching for them. Not quickly enough though, since Jess easily snatched them back. "C'mon. Don't be like that. You were a cute kid. No need to be ashamed."

Seemed like the man was going to back off for the time being. Neko was fine with that, he could store away his questions until a time came that he could use them.
Curious, Neko stepped back over to the table with his coffee in hand and just managed to glance at the pictures before the vocalist had to snatch them up to prevent Riyo from taking them. Chuckling a bit, Neko sipped at his coffee after adding some cream and a little sugar. "It's good to know you're eating habits have improved." He was referring to the picture with the little girl with ice cream all over her face. Though the smile she had in both pictures was nothing like how she was now. If her father would have ended up with her instead of her mother how different would she have been? It really didn't do any good to guess about the out comes that were no longer possible, but it was still something to think about.
"So are you going to be sticking around? Riyo says you're in a band," Neko asked casually, still sipping at his coffee.

With cheeks now showing a twinge of red, Riyo shot Neko a glare before dumping loads of cream and sugar into her cup, thoroughly embarrassed of herself... Even though she didn't remember those pictures being taken or the events leading up to them. Honestly, she only remembered the last day seeing him. Right before everything went sour...
Sighing, she took a sip of her coffee and sat it back down on the table before moving back to work. She'd always chopped the fact that she coudn't remember up to the fact that she'd been so young at the time.
Glancing at the pictures with a smile before shoving them back into his pocket, Jess gave a short nod to Neko before answering. "Yes sir." He declared, taking a gulp of the black coffee. "The band had been talking about taking a break anyways, so it'll give me time to get a nice house out here and pick up where I left off with my daughter." And he meant it literally, which is what made Riyo worry so much. She wasn't 4 anymore, after all. Hell, she was barely the same person... Didn't seem like he realized that yet. "Best years of my life were those four years." He mused. "Excluding that b***h who kicked me out and left me on the street."

Neko couldn't help but smirk at the glare Riyo gave him but he didn't bother to say anything else about it or the pictures Jess had. He had some embarrassing pictures of his own buried somewhere in the house that his own mother had taken before she died. It was enough to make him shutter but he couldn't bring himself to throw them out. He was only thankful she hadn't taken a lot of them.
"Pick up....where you left off?" Neko quirked a brow. Even he could sense the meaning was a little more than figurative. Hopefully he was wrong and reading into the tone a little to much but that would explain Riyo's exasperation. Disregarding the last part Neko took another sip of coffee. "You don't plan on taking her to carnivals and pony rides do you?" If he did this man needed to serious reevaluate himself.

For a moment, Jess stared at Neko with a blank look after he'd asked him a question...
"Why didn't I think of those?!" The vocalist shouted enthusiastically, a broad smile on his lips. Obviously that was exactly what he meant. "I saw some flyers for the carnival a little while ago and I'm sure somebody has horses out here."
While her back might've been turned to the two, Riyo had heard everything... And her eye was twitching like there was no tomorrow. "... Carnival?" She seethed, imagining all the terrible things he'd put her through. And as for pony rides...Something told her that the pony wouldn't like her too much.

So....this man was daft. It was plan as day to see now. No wonder Riyo seemed so frazzled. Rubbing at the bridge of his nose shortly Neko focused back on his coffee.
"I think you may need to re-think that option if you seriously plan on taking her to....something like that or similar." He looked to Riyo shortly wondering if anything he was going to say would upset her. Not that he watched what came out of his mouth all that much anyway. But it didn't take an acute sense of observation to know this man was stuck in the past.
"I think you've been staring at those pictures too long. While your brain is stuck on the fact that she's four years old, Riyo....isn't four years old. Sucks but that childhood your obviously dreaming of continuing has passed you by. Might do you better to get to know the person she is now instead of treating her like the person she was." He could have easily brought her mother into the equation too because obviously....who wouldn't change with a mother like that? Neko was surprised Riyo wasn't a blood thirsty lunatic.

Jess's eyes saddened as he listened to Neko's harsh (but true) words. While yes, he heard what Neko was saying, the stubbornness inside him wouldn't let it go. What did this guy know about raising children? It was fairly obvious from the bachelor pad that he had none. "But she'll always be a little girl to me. That's just how it is." Apparently a few well-chosen words had no effect on the vocalist's levels of stupidi- I mean devotion.
Taking a big gulp of the black substance in his mug, he took a moment to think of something else to say. "I think you might understand where I'm coming from if you had kids of your own. It's like... Having this cute little carbon copy of yourself with eyes full of innocence and preciousness. Instead of working on your dreams, you forfeit your selfishness to help this new being proceed in fulfilling it's own..."
A long pause.
"... Or at least, you try to. Then you ask for a divorce because the woman your married to hasn't looked you in the eyes since your daughters were born and she takes everything you have, kicks you out on the street, and moves away the first chance she gets. Then you have no dreams. You just have a cardboard box in an alley and a jar of spare change with your name on it." Jess's face had gone blank for moments as he summed up the last half of his life, not realizing a slip he'd made. "I was trying to make a point before I slipped off to nostalgia lane... I think it was that I can still look at her and see that innocent smile buried somewhere in that face.
Neko's words mixed with her father's initial comment made Riyo stop for a moment. She... Really was quite different from how she started out, wasn't she? And dreams... What dreams? The only thing she'd really wanted was to have a somewhat quiet life. What would she do once she had that? She went to school, but for what? She had no goals or aspirations... The fact that she'd made it that far was a goal in and of itself, she supposed.
The slip her father had made was taken as nothing more than accidentally adding an 's' to the word. The thought that she had a sibling had never crossed her mind, nor did she think it was a possibility. "I'm gonna clean the bathroom." Riyo mumbled, a lack of emotion in her voice. She wasn't upset, just... Stunned that she hadn't realized earlier.

Neko was about to call bullshit on what Jess was saying since this man obviously didn't know what it was like to have kids either. Sure he was Riyo's father but four years of experience thirteen years ago hardly qualified a man to know what the hell he was talking about. Besides....Neko kind of felt like he had a kid. Not that Riyo couldn't take care of herself but she seemed to rely on him from time to time and in all honestly, though he would never admit it outside of pain of death, he cared about what happened to her.
But instead of saying mostly what was on his mind Neko focused in on something else. While the little slip up had seemingly gone unnoticed by Riyo, Neko was certain a man couldn't confused the fact if he had one or more daughters. Watching Riyo leave the room and disappear into the bathroom Neko looked back to Jess.
"Okay, I can tell you obviously don't get it. You've been out of the parenting game for a while. It sounds like you've had it rough and true I don't have kids but I can understand enough to know that she doesn't want to be treated like she's four." Maybe it was because he wasn't that different in age and knew he wouldn't want to be treated that way. Especially not when he had grown up without much of a choice long long ago. He knew the situation for Riyo probably wasn't much different. "But more importantly.....daughters?" He asked his question softly not really wanting Riyo to over hear. Either it was a mistake....or there was a great deal of missing information.

It appeared to take Jess a moment after he was called out to realize his slip. Slowly his face went from confused to considerably pale, as if he'd just seen a ghost. "Daughters? Did I say that? I meant daughter. Since I only have one. Mhm. Just one. Yep."
Even a mentally disabled person could tell something was very wrong. In truth, Jess thought about it every day of his life. Only he and his ex knew about it, and the fact that now he was alone to bare the burden ate at his insides. He so desperately wanted to share it with somebody... But he couldn't risk Riyo finding out. She'd never forgive him and he knew it. With a forlorn expression, the vocalist stared into his cup, appearing much less peppy than he had been a few minutes ago.

Neko's eyes narrowed in an unimpressed fashion as the vocalist obviously thought him stupid to believe the words coming out of his mouth. He wasn't going to press the matter though, since the man obviously didn't want to talk about it but he couldn't help but have a feeling about something. An idea tickling the back of his brain that just wouldn't let up. His mind seemed to trace back to the day when he had been shot by Riyo's mother. The woman had a rather strange reaction to Nami in the hallway, as if elated to see her. Not to mention she did kind of resemble..."Oh god...it's Nami..." Sometimes being observant worked out and sometimes it solved puzzles that were better left unsolved.
He knew that Riyo and Nami weren't exactly pals. In fact, he was pretty sure they were the furthest from being friends that two people could be. It was a wonder though that no one had brought up their possible relation before. Perhaps it was because they were very different personality-wise and if a family had enough money to send them to this school they certainly had enough money to keep both children.

Nervously Jess tapped the mug in his hands as a silence befell the two of them... Though he definitely didn't expect to hear the next four words out of his new acquaintance's mouth.
"W-WHAT?" Jess shouted, but immediately covered his mouth and looked towards the direction Riyo had gone off in. After not seeing the blonde emerge again for a few moments, he turned back to Neko with wide eyes. "How the ******** did you know her name?" He asked in a voice that was almost a whisper, panic running across his face.

Seemed like his deductive reasoning had been right on the mark. It was a gift and a curse all the same. "Power of deduction, she goes to this school." Neko said softly glancing toward the bathroom door. Setting his coffee aside he stepped a bit closer to Jess. "And let me just start of by saying you've got one hell of a mess on your hands if that is, in fact, true."

"Please don't tell Riyo." Jess begged almost immediately. "There's a reason I kept it secret and if you can keep it quiet I'll tell you."
Then the fact the daughter he'd seen only once was so close sunk in. What was she like? Was she happy? How had the years treated her compared to Riyo? All kinds of questions about her flooded his mind... But asking those could wait until this situation was settled.
Riyo had been busily making each and every nook shine in the bathroom as she always did, focusing on her task rather than what was going on in the rest of the house.
With a pleasantly distracted smile, she took the duster and opened the cabinets, making quick work of any dust bunnies that happened to be hiding.
But something caught her sensitive ears. As she accidentally bumped the back, a very hollow noise echoed back to her. with a few more prods, the thing began to come loose, which half worried her at first... But upon closer inspection it was obvious that it was supposed to do that.
"What?" She spoke to herself quietly, spotting what looked like an old photo album that had been intently hidden behind the flimsy back. Glancing out to make sure Neko wasn't on his way, she grabbed the item and sat it on her lap. There was no hesitation as she flipped back the cover to check out the contents.

Neko judged Jess' words for a moment before he had a seat at the table. "Fine, I'll keep it quiet. But if Riyo finds out on her own I never knew to begin with." He wasn't about to get caught up in the middle of that but...he was curious. "So why did you keep it secret?"
The photo album that Riyo had found happened to be the one Neko never wanted anyone else to ever see. The very first page was full of classic embarrassing baby photos. It seemed Neko had a fascination with having something in his mouth as a baby since in almost all of the photos he had his hand, a toy, or something in it. As the photos went on he got older, he seemed to be a rather cute kid if not a little awkward. He was thin with messy short cut hair, eerie smoky gray eyes, and in some of the photos it seemed he had...a tail? or did it look like there was more than one? It was hard to say but it seemed like he was happy. Either he was outside playing, covered in dirt (or food) or he was asleep sprawled across the floor like he had crashed half way through playing a game.
When it looked as though he had hit the age of five another person began to show up in the photos. A pretty blonde woman with long wavy hair, bright blue eyes, like the eyes Neko had now, and a bright smile. The photos had obviously been taken by Neko as a child since they were crooked and all angled up, but it didn't seem to take away from the pictures at all.
A few times they had taken photos together and Neko seemed full of smiles without a care in the world, but as the pages turned and Neko got older, the woman began to look frailer. Her complexion became pale and she looked worn and tired, but the smile she held didn't look to be forced or fake in the slightest. When it looked as though Neko had turned around eight the pictures suddenly stopped and nestled in the back on a blank photo page was a folded up newspaper article. An obituary, from long ago in the beginning of January, the same photo of the woman in the pictures on the paper.
((I'll let you decide how far Riyo gets through the album.))

"Deal." Well, thank God that had worked out... Kinda. Now he had to relive the 'finest moments' of his life.
He'd always figured he'd have to think about the past again when Riyo came back into the picture... But he had no idea he'd have to do it so frequently. "I guess the best place to start is the beginning. I was a stupid teenager just like most of the kids you probably see on a daily basis. Sure that I knew everything and nothing my parents told me could possibly be the truth. My mother was a sweet woman, my father was a hard a**. Mom would argue in my favor, but good 'ol dad always ended up winning the argument." Jess sighed, leaning back in his chair. "I met Anne-" The first time he'd actually referred to her by her name. "And immediately thought to myself 'Yep. this is the woman I'll be with for the rest of my days', because believe it or not, she was probably the sweetest girl a guy like me could ever hope to meet. Blonde hair that glistened like gold in the sun... Big blue eyes that never lost their glow. Kickin' curves... Uh... Oh, yeah..." Then she turned into that. And 'that' made Jess frown. "Anyways... We were so sure we were in love and all that garbage. I got her knocked up, and my father being the hard a** told me I wouldn't get s**t from him. That he had warned me (which he did) about the whole situation and now I had to reap what I'd sewn." Glancing over at Neko, he smiled sadly. "You're probably thinking 'that's what you get, you jackass', and I guess from this point I can safely say I'd say that too... But there's more."
Grabbing his mug, he took a small sip, but seemed to find more interest in staring at it than actually using it. "I quit school and started working so I could take care of my family. We got married, and things looked pretty good, honestly. We were both very happy. Tired, but happy. Had a nice little apartment. Wasn't much, but it was something." Up to this point, it was like everything he'd told Riyo and her friends at dinner nights ago. "... Then the two of them were born." Jess paused for a moment, as if unsure of the best way to continue. "The initial happiness at seeing two healthy infants wore off when we realized... There was no way we could take care of two. I barely made enough to feed a family of three. That night, I calculated and recalculated to try and find some way we could get by, even if I had to work 7 days a week... But there wasn't. So for the first time in almost a year, I went to my dad and begged him for some kind of help... And do you know what he said?" The man's eyes narrowed as he recalled those cold words. "It's not my problem." He seethed as that sentence escaped his mouth, still sounding like nails across a chalkboard after all these years.
It took a minute for him to continue, knowing the next part was the hardest. "So... We had to pick one to give up... I knew what Riyo was... And I had an idea of what might happen to her... Figured it would be best if I was able to keep my eye on her. Nami was completely normal, and had those pretty blue eyes like her mother... But..." That didn't make it any easier. It had been so goddamn hard to let go. For both of them. And he'd tried to form the words to say that... To no avail. They just wouldn't come out.
"I told Anne after we gave Nami up that maybe we could get her back if we worked really hard... And we did... Only to find out that she'd been adopted by a man who could give her so much more than we could. She never forgave me. And moreover, I think she slowly began to realize why I'd come to such a quick decision when it came to our kids..."
"So it's all my fault. Everything. And I fear that if Riyo found out about this... She'd never want to see my face again." Could he blame her? No... But all he'd wanted since she was born was to be in her life and help her in any way he could. To be there for her. "What would you have done in my situation?" He'd never gotten the chance to ask anybody, because he'd always kept it to himself... So now Jess wanted to know.
A big smug grin spread across Riyo's face as she realized just what this was, almost immediately contemplating revenge as she flipped through the first pages... Until she started noticing things. The fact that his eyes were different didn't strike Riyo as extremely odd. Sometimes it happened to kids... Though generally they started out as bright and faded to a duller color.
But... Was that a tail? Neko didn't have a tail.
Then again... Neko was weird in his own regard. She knew he didn't tell her everything... But it had never bugged her as much as it did seeing that.
Slowly, the weird factor wore off as she saw how happy he was as a kid. Kinda like how she had apparently been. And she could only assume the woman in the photos was his mother. It was a wonder he didn't talk about her more. She seemed very happy, and so did he.
But... The reason slowly became a little clearer. Riyo's subconscious smile began to fade as her mind pieced together what was happening... Until the newspaper clipping confirmed her fears. Frowning, she stared at the article for minutes before she realized how much time had passed. Suddenly her discovery wasn't nearly as satisfying as she first thought.
