Oh good, he was unemployed, and from the sounds of it had absolutely no stable form of income. That also meant he very likely didn't have a stable living place, either. For once she felt glad her parents hadn't allowed her to run off on a pokemon adventure. She couldn't help the slight chuckle at part of his statement. "Yes, most people do seem to be too hung up on looks or what your hair color is or piercings or tattoos and scars," she said with a nonchalant shrug. "I never really understood that actually, it seems so ridiculous. Actually," she said after a short pause, peering up at him curiously - he was still sitting on the ground holding Blue as the little 'vee assaulted her toy - before continuing, "forgive my curiosity, but how many scars do you have? Just the two, or..?" She'd seen the one on his chest in the mall - Arceus, why the hell would he be shirtless in the freaking mall - but what she really wanted to know is why he'd hurt his leg so badly. It seemed odd that a perfectly fine, healthy, normal leg would cause its owner so much anguish and limping from a little fall.

...Geh. Humph. He wasn't sure he really wanted to talk about this; discussing strengths was one thing, but weaknesses was quite another. Frowning slightly, Aulus spun his staff distractedly as he tried to decide what, if anything, to say.

He wasn't sure how much point there was in refusing to talk though, not after she'd seen him limping like that in the mall. She had to be asking because she thought another scar was the cause of that, or because she knew there had to be some kind of injury and was trying to slowly turn the conversation that way. Hu. Maybe it didn't matter if there was a point or not; let her wonder, let her draw her on conclusions that might or might not be correct. She might guess that it wasn't as bad as it was, or that it was worse than it was; either one put him in a better place than telling the truth... But if he said nothing, she'd know that it was a topic that mattered to him. It would be best to answer her question, but to make it clear to her that what she'd witnessed didn't make him weak.

"I've got plenty of scars here and there," Aulus said eventually, bringing his stave to rest once more, "the usual little nicks anyone who lives an active life can expect to pick up. I'm guessing you mean significant ones like this though?" he gestured to the gash across his face. "Three of those, and none of them stop me from smacking down somebody who has it coming; even if I'm limping like I was in the mall I could take most people to pieces." This was true, but it was also true that against somebody of equal skill he'd be in deep deep trouble. Still, it wasn't all that often that he ended up needing to fight people as good as he was. The thing about most really good fighters was that they were so confident and self-assured they felt no need to pick fights. Thankfully.

Judging by his distracted behavior before finally answering her question, coupled with the answer he'd supplied, her earlier supposition had been correct. Or at least partially so. Three similar scars? She'd seen him shirtless from front and back and had only seen two of the three, so that made it obvious the third was likely on a leg somewhere. If it was, well, that would quite easily explain why he limped so bad in the mall. Hmm, interesting.

"From your demonstration with that staff, I'd definitely believe it," she said at length, deciding it might be better to leave the topic of scars. His hesitance to answer her question made it quite obvious it was a touchy subject. But why? Didn't tough guys like showing off scars and other manly things of that nature? Maybe it was because of the limp. Limping probably isn't very manly. Yes, that must be it.

Violet eyes flitted down to Blue as the little 'vee suddenly stretched and yawned before curling up into a fluffy ball in Claire's hands. A small smile twitched at the corners of her lips before she realized just how much the sunlight was waning. Hmm, it might be a good idea to head back to the base soon. She didn't want to be alone in the park in the middle of Camphoreon at night. Or with a stranger in the park in the middle of Camphoreon at night. No thanks.

"Humph. Good..." It was starting to get dark, and he still hadn't worked out where he was going to sleep tonight. Some cheap motel probably; all cracked plaster and creeping damp. Unexplained stains. Three months ago he'd have turned his nose up just at the outside of a place like that. Perhaps all of this was character building. Chasing a nest of Spinarak out of the bathroom in one of them had certainly been an... experience. It wasn't like he had a lot of choice though, so it was time to suck it up and find some place nearby that he could afford, and preferably that didn't look like the setting of a horro movie.

"Well, I don't know what your plans for tonight are," Aulus said abruptly, signaling Tortie (who had been lurking sullenly a short distance away) to come to heel, "but mine include finding a hotel and some dinner. Take care to keep Zeus away from chocolate pools, and Blue away from expensive things." Lacking anything else to say, or any real desire to say it even if he had thought of something, Aulus turned away and set off towards his bike. He really needed to start making some money.

A hotel? Egh, no stable sleeping arrangements either, not just income. Well, plenty of people on base had been injured or scarred and didn't let that hinder them, so she had no doubt the scar on his leg would affect him too much. Or at least she hoped it wouldn't, but she was getting ahead of herself. First she'd need to discuss this with one of the elites.

"And make sure no rogue blue Eevees chew that expensive camera of yours," she retorted as he moved to leave, pulling out all three pokeballs as she spoke. After returning Zeus and Blue she put their pokeballs as well as Blue's toy into her bag before she rose and walked out of the trees. Once in the clear she released Odette, who stretched before flapping her wings a few times in the cool air. "Alright, let's go, Odette," the young woman said as she slung the bag over her shoulder, and the Pidgeot obediently complied by leaning forward to allow her trainer to climb up onto her back. Claire did so with one swift, fluid motion, the result of doing the same thing for over three years, before the bird easily launched herself into the air. She half-circled while flapping her wings to gain altitude before heading off towards the desert. It was unnecessary for Claire to give her any instructions or tell her where to go, because Odette already knew. Where else would they go at such a late hour?
