Obscurus In their defense, Jessi Slaughter did the worst possible thing a person can do when they're being bullied: She taunted the bullies. Then she cried foul when they struck back in force. A bunch of idiots wouldn't be able to pull off the things that they pull off. I think it would be better to describe them as people that, being anonymous, are no longer inhibited by identity. They are free to essentially do what they want and express themselves however they want. No longer bound by social conventions they can show their true selves. A lot of the time, the true self of any particular human being is an ugly thing. Believe me though, anonymity is liberating.
1. Still not right to mess with little kids. 2. There's no such thing as actually being anonymous. Especially on the internet. Set up all of the proxys and fake IPs you want, if someone wants to find you, they can and they will. The internet gives people a false sense of security, nothing more.

That's the thing about the internet. Anything you can do, someone can counter-act it. Anonymous has learned that. Why do you think Anonymous has it so easy? Because they are a group of random people, not an organization. That makes it hard to find them since they aren't a group. Not to mention, as Obscurus kindly informed me of, even the FBI got dooped from Anonymous and a few simple hackings.
Sure, maybe they aren't perfect. However, I feel we will know who is the REAL internet ruler when Anonymous and Home-Land Security go face to face in an information hack-off.

I'll tell you what will happen. Anonymous will give them a reason to sign bills like the internet kill switch into law.
It's not hard to find them. Any of them that do something criminally can be found just as easily as they find people irl if the authorities wish to pursue them.

It's not hard to find them. Any of them that do something criminally can be found just as easily as they find people irl if the authorities wish to pursue them. It's not that simple, though. People CAN be tracked down, but there are ways to hide your tracks. Hacking has better and more complex coding besides IP mirroring and other simple hacking. Just a simple example would be anonymous taking 60,000 FBI emails and posting them on the pirate bay. Why? Because the FBI tried tracking down anonymous members and arrested five. BUT, they weren't even anonymous members. They were your average-joe hackers. The FBI ******** up and showed anonymous that they were being hunted, so anonymous retaliated.
Anonymous wouldn't give the government a reason to activate the internet kill switch because the kill switch's purpose is to turn off certain sections of the internet in case of international cyber threat between countries. A small legion like anonymous couldn't get them to do this. But let's say the kill switch does come into play. Doesn't that PROVE anonymous is more powerful and it would cause the government to go to extreme measures just to have them stop hacking? Anonymous out hacked them, so the kill switch would just be a big a** sign with lights saying "I don't want to play this game anymore."
But the kill switch isn't what we are discussing; that's off topic. We are talking about tracking down members.
Why hasn't it happened? Anonymous threatened home land security and ******** with the FBI. The only people they arrested were average hackers that weren't even apart of anonymous. That or they were small pawns that didn't have that great hacking skills. Anonymous is LARGE and full of various members in spread out locations. Finding them wouldn't be difficult, no... Finding them would be impossible. They have mastered coding beyond our own government and now the government doesn't even know what to do about it.

I think the primary blame lies on the girl's parents. There may be no such thing as true anonymity, but the Internet provides the tools for the closest variety currently possible. Since it's so easy to find people online, the FBI have surely mopped up all the sex predators and child pornography out there in cyberspace, freeing up their priorities. That must be why they've moved on to Anonymous. Oh, wait.... It's a lot easier to disappear than you think, proxies or not.

Would you be describing yourself? I have given actual events that have taken place of the basic things I am getting across. You have given opinion after opinion, changing topics, without a single lick of proof. and suddenly, my ideas are Megalomania?

Where are the citations to your so called proof?
@obscurus: That'd be because there are too many people to go after, not because they can't find them. Just like back in the mob days, they'd follow the little guys and wait it out, sometimes years, to get to the high rollers.

I didn't need to give citations because Obscurus posted the news articles just on the other page. It even has links to hacked Twitter accounts. Not to mention I'm sure some of the carnage is still there on Pirate Bay and the other websites. I don't think I need to repost sites that are just easily a click away from the page before.

If they intend to take over the world (or even the country) then there will be. I guess what is happening in this thread right now almost proves your point though. We mostly all agree that the government works by illusion of power. Well, Anonymous also has the illusion of power. And that is working for them the same way it works for the government: creating loyalty and fear. However, they'll simply never have the man power or the funds to take over. There are a lot of them, but not that many, and not all of them are into the whole world domination thing. Like I said, most of them are just a bunch of stupid kids.

Who said anything about them taking over the world? This discussion was just about them facing off a few government organizations from what I recall.
