what you are saying seems to be more stereotype than trait. traits are more physical features and things along those lines. saying African American people are good at sports is a stereotype, like saying all Mexicans are illegal, all French people are rude, all Americans are fat, and all gay guys like all other guys. though, like you, i dislike people as individuals.

In all honesty, this is how I view it. Statistics have to be looked at for more than just their numbers, or what word of mouth says about them. Most of the things your quoting has to do with their cultural life style. Such as asians being good at math, there's a lot of reason to believe it's because the Chinese alphabet, for example ,has about 6000 characters. Mexicans being hard workers, the Mexicans you're thinking of are usually the ones who risked their lives to make it into another country so they could work to make a future for their family. I'm pretty sure Bill Gates and Steven Hawking are not Asian. Pretty sure you're racist, even if you have no bad intentions. [btw this is my first post in the guild. :3]

Prejudice is a judgement or opinion based on preconceived notions and often an irrational fear/hatred of a particular group. If you think you're racist chances are you're not...though everyone has their moments of bigotry. Don't get caught up in it. prejudice against people based on 'preconceived notions and irrational fear/hatred' is racism. i don't think generalising that 'everyone has their moments of bigotry' is acceptable. you are giving yourself a get out of jail free card, racism is not excusable, shame on you too. Um. No...it's not. Racism is hatred. Prejudice is preconceived notions that people act upon usually because of ignorance (lack of information). Racism is straight up hatred. You can have racism with prejudice but, prejudice doesn't necessarily mean racism. The two terms are NOT interchangeable. Shame on me? Huh. I think you missed the point of what I was saying. I'm saying everyone--probably even you up there on your soapbox--has their moments where they judge based purely on preconceived notions of some kind of social group. No matter how big or how small. Small things like making sure your car door is locked when you see a black person crossing the street in front of you. My mother does this. It doesn't mean she's a bad person, just has some preconceived notions about black people that she acts upon.

No. It's not racist. It's prejudice. A prejudice is "an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason". Being scared of a black person at night comes from a lack of knowledge of a person and basing your actions on the preconceived notion that "black people are hoodlums". It does not come from a place of superiority, hate or opression. Which is what 'racism' is. It's the belief that one social group is intrinsically superior over another due to hereditary factors. Usually to the point of oppression.
