"If you didn't gain something from this, I'd be wondering what you wanted." He replied with an open and un-padded honesty that could border on rude. "They mostly use them to promote new music, or just stuff they want to try and sell." He shrugged slightly "I don't use them too often because the idea of using public head phones drives me a little crazy, but it's not like we have much choice other than finding a computer and surfing 'you tube', and somehow that seems less practical without a place to start."
He reached up almost unconsiously and tugged at the thick chain and padlock that hung around his neck, part of him thought that logicly he would just go to a locksmith, inscription be damned. The other part though, that part was just...used to it by now, it was a comfortable familiar weight around his neck. What would he do to forget like she had done... would he be able to stand it?
It seemed like every thing he did these days just lead to more and more questions

The smile faded slowly from Alkaid's face at the blunt reaction, though she didn't seem upset.. just thoughtful. The idea of using others to get things she wanted seemed foreign when she was just trying to find solace in them for the time being. Was that something? Was selfishly using people for her own comfort wrong?
She set the mug of her half-finished tea back on the table, staring at him in silence as he talked about headphones and youtube. She saw him reach up for the padlock though it seemed to have little thought behind it. She would have asked about it but it seemed personal somehow and she was still unfamiliar with the intricacies of that kind of closeness. One day, maybe, when he felt a little less like a stranger..
"I just want to know you and know why you were important to me," she said softly, the unmistakable loss shining in her eyes. Then, as if she hadn't said such a thing at all, she simply pushed her chair back from the table. "I'm tired of being Alkaid today, just help me start being Kaia." It was said with a smile, but it was quiet, as much for emphasis as it was the knowledge that they were in a somewhat crowded tea shop.
She smiled then, covering up the melancholy expression, and held out a hand to him. "Let's go find that shop, yeah?"

His brows kit together for a moment in concern at her reaction, had he said something wrong? No one ever seemed to understand that all he expected from people...at a very basic level was that they -wanted- things from each other. Be it attention or material things...it was just the way of things. The idea that someone might give without expecting -anything- in return was a fantasy to him.
"I didn't... mean that to be offensive." he said carefully before reaching tentatively for her hand. "I... just think it's human nature... people...want things, they want...comfort, money, attention...power...they -want- and...I... I am just going to shut up. I should know better by now."

The smile didn't fade as Zac spoke, but she shook her head as if she were brushing away his apology. "It wasn't offensive, it was truthful," she wrapped her hand around his own and tugged at him lightly to get him up on his feet. "I just don't think about these things. I don't know if it was my nature before or if it's an affect of what's happened, but I feel like a child sometimes." She shrugged a little, trying to reassure him with a small squeeze of her hand.
"The only way I learn is from watching and listening and to do that I need to surround myself with people instead of books." She glanced out across the semi-crowded shop, a few of the people now staring as she stood holding his hand, even in the corner as they were. "I do want things, so it's not a lie. I just want things I should already have and that makes life.. complicated. So I want to forget about it for a while and just have fun, forget what I've forgotten."
She glanced back at him then, after successfully turning all eyes away with her own, and smiled once more. "So let's go have fun."

"... make...new memories you mean." He said carefully, half a statement half a question. Fun... the word sometimes seemed alien, always someone else's idea of entertainment. But for her he could hardly begrudge her that. "Alright..." He nodded looking more confidant and turning to stare back at the people whom had stared at them, glancing each one over like he was cataloging them in his head before glancing back.
"Let us begin..." the smile hinted at the corner of his mouth again, teasing and vanishing like it was afraid to really be just yet. "Lead on, we may as well try as much as suits your fancy as we can, right?"

"Yes, new memories," she echoed quietly, the smile on her face that had only been hiding others now became more real, more truly felt. Whatever Zac had been to whoever she was, he was there to help her by being someone to her again. That was one pillar in her fragile support, but everything started from something, right?
"To new memories then," she tugged on his hand and wove them through the tables and people filling the shop, towards the door across the room. The bell overhead dinged to tell the workers that they were leaving, but for Kaia it was the signal of a new start - like the shot at the beginning of a race.
She walked out hand-in-hand with him and turned down the paved walkway she didn't recognize. Every path eventually lead somewhere.
