"Was it your fault?" the opposite of his usual tone: it was surprisingly gentle, considering how harsh those words were. Ever was frank. He didn't sugar coat, or dance around the issue, or go digging for an answer like it was a gem among stones. He just asked.

A frown creased his brows and if anything, he looked really honestly -vulnerable- for that brief moment, like turning over a porcupine to find the soft under belly. "... I don't know...probably." He said and then looked irritated...at himself or them it was hard to say. "Dosen't matter..." He said and shoved a hand through his bangs, they stayed out of his face for a few seconds before sliding back like the tide.

Ever blew his smoke out carefully -- over Zac's head and away from him, instead of his face. If nothing else, he could be considerate in this one thing, making a little noise and tapping it off on the other side with a flick of his thumb.
"Sure, then. Shipped you off to a school for troubled boys. You do any actual learning there?"

"I have good grades, not the best...theirs some a** who has wooed even the Cafeteria staff who holds that ranking but I pull good grades in most classes...except gym."
He twisted to watch as the smoke went clear past him, considerate... point for Ever. "What about you? What's your story..."

Easy to avoid Zac's face when he was a full head shorter than Ever. But he'd take the credit if offered, certainly. For now he drew again on the thing, buying himself a little time to think on that without seeming too serious, too focused.
He sighed the smoke, this time, without looking down at Zac.
"Eh, I had funding issues." It was the story he always told, but it felt a little flat in his mouth right now, came out too fake. So he forced himself to elaborate. "...in that my dad stopped paying."

"Would it be 'creepy' to ask why?" Zac asked, he matched ever almost tone for tone in that it wasn't digging, it wasn't needling... it was just a question, no pressure to answer no sarcasm no suspicion. For Zac that was a minor miracle but he was... working on it.

Ever huffed in reply, scratching at his hair and the back of his neck and fidgety. His discomfort was obvious, and maybe he should have just skirted around the question, but that hardly seemed fair with Zac telling him the truth...
"They, uh. There was a teacher..." And he floundered with it, all the same, actually looking embarrassed. Couldn't do it. "I guess they thought the place was a bad influence."

Zac looked thoughtful for a long moment, weighing options on what to say... what not to say. Admitting this to ANYONE beyond Beth and Dem just... hadn't happened...but here they were.
"... Mine just figure its a phase." He said, the sentence hung there, awkward and out of place but... in its own way sympathetic.

"Mine figure I'm going to hell for it." He huffed out a breath, looking down at Zac finally and grimacing just a little, shaking it off like it didn't matter. "And that since I chose to disobey them, I can easily be excised from their lives. Whatever, it doesn't matter."

"Funny... I always figured that the people who were confidant they were going to 'heaven' had a front row seat in the hand basket" Zac mused. It did nothing to improve his opinion of humanity at large. Actually he was at least lightly touched by the irrational desire to turn his somewhat vigilante vigils in the red light district into a visit to whomever Ever called family just because he had a bad taste in his mouth for them already...and because he was curious how Ever would react if he saw that in a news paper. Sadly he doubted that he could really gather enough energy in the area to make the trip worth while... but..
He did have the red crystal... that could be funny if nothing else.

Ever should have said something flippant in reply, but instead he went quiet, just a little awkward, his eyes distant while he thought about it. Twice, he smothered a reply with the cigarette against his mouth, but eventually he couldn't bite his tongue any longer.
"...well, I mean, it's not like they're wrong." s**t. His shoulders tensed just saying it, but there was also a certainty behind the words. Long-ingrained lessons, but maybe more than that, too. "I have a decisively un-Christian lifestyle, at this point."

"Aren't they? Pride is a sin... are they asking to be forgiven for being sure that their going?... What about the fact that the church used to excommunicate people for driving others AWAY from the church..." He shot back growing slightly tense himself. "Religion changes, whatever was written down by... Jesus or any other ...prophet has been passed from HUMAN to Human...if it was divine at any point of time its been turned towards human intent and views for a very long time in between."

More of that floundering; a half dozen snap-reaction replies that Even had to swallow, still tense, flicking ash nervously off the end of the cigarette. Zac was digging a bit deeper than he realized, and it left Ever just aching to leap to the defense: nevermind if he got the s**t end of the stick because of it.
"...humans aren't God." That was all he was going to say about it, and he finally flicked a look down to Zac. "Please drop it."

"And there in lies the problem." he said looking like he had a mouth full of ashes over the subject. "hmph..."
He folded his arms and walked in silence, awkward silence before he sighed heavily. "So what does one DO at a club."

"Sin." It was too on-topic to resist, and he almost regretted saying it as soon as he opened his mouth but -- only almost. Ever took the bite off of it with a lopsided flash of a smile and a quick twitch of one shoulder, cigarette against his mouth as he considered a more genuine answer.
"Dance. Drink. There's food sometimes." He shook his head and tried to force himself to relax. "Meet people."
