"Keep your eyes on the road," she teased with another chuckle. No, volcanoes didn't sound very pleasant at all, and she had no desire to be in a place that could erupt at any moment and drown them all in lava. Or magma. Either one.
"I've only been on one mission so far," she admitted, peering out the window at the scenery for a moment or two. "The last one, the ball. It wasn't too bad." She chose not to comment on his statement, though she figured it had something to do with not remembering. After all, Luke was his defense mechanism, it only made sense for him to be present during missions to protect Lucas.

"What?" He responded to her teasing with his own, removing his hands from the wheel and letting the vehicle coast forward on its own. "I think I can handle the occasional glance." He returned his hands to their proper position, still grinning, and turned his eyes back to the road.
"Ahh, was that what did in your arm?" he guessed. He had always vaguely wondered and never properly asked, assuming that the job itself was a liability and she could have been hurt any number of ways. "Wait, at a ball? Like, all fancy and stuff?" He hadn't paid much attention when the last mission had occurred since he had had no interest in attending it, and the concept struck him as... quite strange.

She chuckled again, glad she wasn't afraid of cars like some people seemed to be. If she was, then someone taking their hands off the wheel would more than likely terrify her. Thankfully she wasn't, but the line of thought was moot all the same and she dropped it. "Glance at what? There's only desert outside!" Or at least, that's all there was at the moment - hopefully they'd reach the city limits soon.
She nodded to confirm his question, looking down at her left arm as she thought about it. "Yeah, I thought it was really strange. A fancy ball, I had to wear a dress and everything," she explained and stuck her tongue out a bit to show her displeasure. "The goal was to steal rare or powerful pokemon. I have a feeling though that most of them weren't powerful at all, just a lot of fluffed-up pretty idiots. Odette loved the attention she was getting." At least one of them had enjoyed it. "When it was time to leave I tried to fly out on her, but we got caught up in some sort of explosion. I still don't know what caused it," she explained with a thoughtful frown. Oh well, it wasn't good to dwell on things she couldn't figure out and probably never would. "Either way, it knocked her off balance really bad and I fell off and landed on.. something, I think a chair. I didn't really pay attention to that besides the fact that it hurt." And it did hurt. A lot.

"Well, it's only polite to look at your company when you're talking to them, right?" As if to prove his point, he cast another momentary glance in Claire's direction. He was confident enough in his skills as a driver to do that much, and it wasn't as though there was a whole lot of traffic in the desert. Camphoreon's silhouette had yet to appear on the horizon, and so he assumed it would stay that way for a while yet.
Lucas couldn't help but feel somehow grateful that that was one mission he didn't have to do, having never been a huge fan of fancy dress. Not that he had any delusions of remembering it if he had gone, but the sentiment remained. "Even useless pokemon have their own benefits, right? I mean, with cloning and all." Or at least that was the impression he had gotten. He didn't have a very good idea of how the cloning department actually worked. "Anyway, sounds like the kind it was kind of fun, huh? I mean, disregarding the uncomfortable dress code and the broken arm..." Maybe not so much fun then.

"True," she said with a slight chuckle. That usually was considered polite, anyway, but weren't drivers exempt from looking at people to be polite? They had to concentrate on the road, after all.
A small growl erupted from her stomach, and Claire shifted a bit. Arceus, she was hungry... Hopefully it wouldn't be much longer before they got to Camphoreon. "I suppose so. I don't know what they do with them, probably take DNA samples so they can make clones of them I think." What else would they do with them? "Well, the shrimp cocktail was delicious, and I guess it was sort of fun to dress up and everything," she admitted a bit grudgingly, remembering her practice with make-up and wigs and costumes in the acting school she attended for two years. "But I had to partner up with Leonard, I don't know if you know him or not, but ugh!" Apparently she still wasn't completely over his behavior that night. "No common sense and he just wasn't paying as much attention as he should've. Ball or not, it was still a mission." Him being slow and completely forgetting to call her by a(nother) fake name, as well as giving Odette's name so freely still bothered her.

"No, I've never met him." Or heard of him even, really. There really were a lot of people around the base that he had never met... He frowned slightly as Claire complained, his instinctive desire to defend everyone surfacing. "I'm sure he was trying his best," he reasoned. People who gave less than 100% on missions were rarely well-received upon their return, after all. "Maybe he's just not suited to infiltration. Do you know what department he's with?"

"Oh, I'm sure he was. It was just the beginning that was frustrating, because it didn't feel like as much of a mission as it did just... a fancy party. I think most of us felt at least a little uncomfortable." Long story short, she was merely complaining because it still bothered her, especially when he grabbed her arm. She couldn't help it if she absolutely hated it when people grabbed her, especially guys.
"Department? I'm really not sure, I didn't talk with him too much because I hadn't met him until we got in the car on the way there." And then she'd ran in ahead of him and he had to catch up. It wasn't her fault if he was slow getting out of the vans.

"Ah yeah, I guess that would be expected. Throwing a bunch of criminals into some fancy-pants shindig - I can't imagine more than half of them were in any kind of comfort zone there..." He certainly wouldn't have been, and of all the Rockets he had met so far, he could think of few that seemed as though they would be.
"Mm, I see... Well, I guess it wasn't that important anyway. Just a curiosity." And anyway, if he had done as poorly as Claire suggested, it seemed pretty obvious that at the very least he was not with the espionage/surveillance department. As he idly considered these thoughts, Camphoreon's form began to emerge from the haze of the horizon. "Oh, check it out. There's the city."

For a period of time she actually had been enjoying herself - most specifically when she was sampling the shrimp - but that was only briefly. Stupid Leonard, messing up and... bah. "Yeah, I know most of us felt pretty awkward. I think a couple seemed to really enjoy it though." They must've been crazy.
Not that their crazy compared to other forms of crazy she had encountered lately.
"Oh, check it out. There's something to look at besides sand," she replied jokingly, her tone sarcastic. Not that the desert was that boring, but after a while of living in it you tended to get bored of the sight of sand, sand, and more sand. Especially when you were stuck there for six weeks on doctor's orders.

"What, you mean you're tired of the sand?" he said, mocking offense. "But look at it! It's so... Okay, yeah, it's pretty boring." He leaned back a little further, pressing his shoulder blades into the seat. Unfortunately the seat was still made of bricks and iron and spikes. "You know, if you look far enough that way," he gestured slightly towards the window, "you can see the ocean. And then that way," he gestured towards the opposite window, "there's the mountains. ...Not that that makes any difference to us, I guess, but they're out there." He had half a desire to visit them some day, too, especially the mountains. It had been ages since he'd last been camping.

"Exactly," she chuckled, slouching in her seat. Fortunately hers was made of softer things rather than bricks and iron and spikes. "It gets even more boring when you're stuck here and not allowed to leave for weeks." Stupid arm...
When he gestured vaguely towards both windows she looked in each direction, and then leaned forward slightly as if that would help her see better. "I haven't gone to either yet. I think I'd like to go to the ocean." She always had loved beaches but hadn't had the chance to go to one in.. in... huh. She couldn't remember the last time she'd gone to one. This would definitely need to be remedied at some point.

"Oh yeah? I wouldn't mind visiting it myself. Always wanted to try salt-water fishing." He vaguely remembered a promise to go with Morrison, but obviously that wasn't going to happen... Or maybe it would, if he could ever track the man down. "I'd say let's go for it, but I'm actually kind of starving a little," he said with a laugh. "Hope you don't mind sticking to the original plan?" Camphoreon was drawing ever nearer; the beginnings of roads could be picked out not too much further ahead.

Salt-water fishing? That did sound... interesting, but she'd rather go there for the sun and the ocean air. It always felt sort of... invigorating somehow. "I've never been salt-water fishing. My uncle took me fishing a couple times but my parents never liked him taking me to do 'improper' things." Meaning anything where she could have fun or get dirty.
"Oh, no, no!" She replied with a laugh, shivering at just the thought of it. "The beach, in winter, seriously? That would be horribly cold. Original plan sounds best, I'm starving too." Thankfully the nauseous feelings had dissipated too, though her head was still pounding. Not as bad as before though, probably due to the pain killers.

"Aw, that's a shame. I can't imagine what I would have done for entertainment as a kid if I couldn't have gone fishing." And camping and hunting too, for that matter. He had always had an affinity for being outdoors, regardless of what the activity was.
"Oh, right, I guess I forgot it was winter," he laughed. "Though they say the beach is warmer than other places during winter. Something about the water retaining heat. Always sounded like a load to me, though." If nothing else, the wind across the winter ocean was positively wicked and destroyed any and all warmth the place might otherwise possess.
Before long they had arrived at Camphoreon's outskirts, the sparsely populated area warning of the population density further in. A parking garage was still a ways off, though, and so Lucas pressed forward.

"I thought fishing was fun, as long as I didn't have to touch the hooks or anything," gross, no thanks, "but I didn't have much to play with growing up. I had --" No, better not mention piano lessons. Or acting school, or.. crap. Well, she had to tell him something at least. "Well, not much," she admitted with a chuckle. "I wasn't allowed to do anything with pokemon if I didn't want to be a coordinator, so all I could do was try to play with my mom's old contest pokemon. They weren't very fun at all." Pity, too.
"Lies, all lies. How could the ocean be warmer in winter? That's ridiculous, it's freezing everywhere. Even if it was warmer, it'd probably be maybe two degrees warmer. Something so minuscule it doesn't even matter." That was probably it, just a degree or two warmer, nothing that made any difference.
