This is a pic of Miyavi's back. The tattoo is of the Heart Sutra.. The Translation:
The Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara was coursing in the deep Prajnaparamita, he perceived that all five skandhas are empty, thereby transcending all sufferings. Sariputra, form is not other than emptiness and emptiness not other than form. Form is precisely emptiness and emptiness precisely form. So also are sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness. Sariputra, this voidness of all dharmas is not born, not destroyed, not impure, not pure, does not increase or decrease. In voidness there is no form, and no sensation, perception, volition or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind; no sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought; there is no realm of the eye all the way up to no realm of mental cognition. There is no ignorance and there is no ending of ignorance through to no aging and death and no ending of aging and death. There is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no cessation of suffering, and no path. There is no wisdom or any attainment. With nothing to attain, Bodhisattvas relying on Prajnaparamita have no obstructions in their minds. Having no obstructions, there is no fear and departing far from confusion and imaginings, they reach Ultimate Nirvana. All past, present and future Buddhas, relying on Prajnaparamita, attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi. Therefore, know that Prajnaparamita is the great mantra of power, the great mantra of wisdom, the supreme mantra, the unequalled mantra, which is able to remove all sufferings. It is real and not false. Therefore recite the mantra of Prajnaparamita: Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha

Hi out there! Well, I find it interesting that nobody here asked the questions "Why do you want an tattoo? Isn't that maybe a form of attachment? Do you want to make your body more attractive? Or do you want the tattoo as a daily reminder to practice the dharma?" There is a discussion on tattoos at the buddhist forum of beliefnet. It's quite interesting, so have a look. I personally think one should carefully examine why one might want a tattoo, if you're then shure you want it as a reminder for your practice, I think it's ok... @Hitokiri: Thanks for posting the heart sutra!

Methinks I have a new idea for a tattoo.

雅Miyavi's been inside my head! gonk
I've been planning to get that as a tattoo for several years now. I'm still going to do it, though, simply because I've always wanted a tattoo and I really enjoy the message (and chant-ability) of the 般若波羅密多心經. 3nodding

Perhaps a small lotus flower AND the mantra underneath it? ...I think that's what I'm going to do if its not too much money. XD Is this right for the mantra in sanskrit? sweatdrop

i think i would get a tattoo of someting simple, a single letter. like A for Avalanche or D for Dharma.
or maybe just the word in its entirety in plane type.
on the other spectrum i might get something like a Hokusai woodblock print or something.
or something more simple and symbolic like a spiral, a circle, or a chakra. i could actually give myself a tattoo of something that simple.

If I do get one, I think it'll be either a small lotus blossom or just the last line of the Heart Sutra, "Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha". But that's a big if, as it depends on a)If I decide to get a tattoo at all, and b) If I can find said statement in proper written Sanskrit or Pali. 3nodding

If I ever get a tattoo (probably not), it'd probably be a Buddhist mandala or yantra figure, though the Hindus do have plenty of interesting ones, also.
I haven't found an illustration of a Maitreya mandala yet, though Manjushri's "ninja star"-like symbol is cool and I like double-dorjes and the Buddha eyes. Ironically, Vajrayogini's double-triangle star could be mistaken for a Star of David and Amitabha/Amitayus' penchant for rainbows probably wouldn't stick mrgreen
From Hinduism, the Kali-yantra and Durga-yantra are interesting.

Makkura; As disgusted as I am, that's cool as hell. I don't think I could ever get a tattoo. It just seems paradoxical to adorn your body with imagery. Could get me too attached to my own decorative body, or the imagery associated with Buddhism.

Peace Love And Skate Makkura; As disgusted as I am, that's cool as hell. I don't think I could ever get a tattoo. It just seems paradoxical to adorn your body with imagery. Could get me too attached to my own decorative body, or the imagery associated with Buddhism. I know, I had the same reaction. I just wish I could see what it's like now that it's healed. sad
