((I'm going to pair up everyone who has an essay done by tonight. I'm sorry that my instructions weren't very clear. Anyone else who posted that they'd like to be in the class, and is still interested, can feel free to post a short essay on any book (real or made up, either works fine). I know, I know, it sounds like real homework, but I promise that it'll get fun.))

Phantom

The book I wish to relate to you is called Phantom, an amazing look into the life, accomplishments and triumphs of Eric, the so-called Phantom of the Opera. Unlike the more populated book, which doesn't exactly give a fair representation of him and make him out to be a careless, self centered monster with an obsession problem, Phantom takes you back to the start; giving a rare insight into how he was not only born, but raised as a child. Or, in his case rather, not raised.

From there, it reveals the reason behind why he's such an anti-social creature and how his genius grew, matured and was recognized all over the place. The way it was written was quite stellar and almost impossible to put down. I could go on for hours about this book since I did find it so amazing, but I don't think you'd want a blow by blow of each part of it with my personal thoughts on it.

It's fairly safe to say that Eric got the shafted quite often throughout his life, which is vastly unfair. If he hadn't been treated like a circus freak just because of a birth defect, think of the amazing things he could have done? And there would have been no Opera house if he hadn't practically built the thing. But, that aside, it's a book that should be picked up and read. It's truly fascinating and, as stated before, well written.

It was a bit shorter than he would have liked, but he knew he could ramble on and on about this book, which was high up on his favorites list. He wasn't sure how this new class would go, but he could at least do the homework for it; even though he had missed the first part of it. Hopefully, this would earn a decent grade.

Wuthering Heights

I found this book to be rather interesting, if not for it's portrayal of Heathcliff, for the strange way it seems to jump from era to era, first starting in the present, only to jump back into the past to give us details of Heathcliff's childhood and later life. It returns to the 'present' for it's prologue and conclusion. The story is most certainly not for everything, due to the dark tone of the narrative, which depicts cruelty of the mental and physical variety. Deep down, the story is most certainly a romantic tragedy (which is another of the reasons I picked this book - I apparently seem to favor such themes in both books and songs, making me think it might be a Nix thing).

My favorite character, was without a doubt Heathcliff, not because I'd ever want to be like him, or because I might I like him, but rather, because he was the most interesting character (not to mention the most messed up, in every which way). His thought process, his actions, and his ways of approaching love make him... not only tragic, in a way but utterly deranged, which in turn kept me interested in the story. Being the central character (relationship-wise anyhow), most of the other characters are in some sort of way, bonded to him (through love, hate, affection, etc).

All in all, while it might not be a story that everyone would enjoy, it's still worth reading for the deep psychological insight of the character. At the end of the day, it would at least give good show of how not to approach a romantic relationship.

As Gabrian sit down in the desk, he rubbed his temples. This was the very last time he would ever allow himself to be dragged into a damned Scario kart competition in Ren's room when he still had homework to do. The fact he'd left his essay half done, had forced him to leave it... well, shorter than he'd have liked, that's for sure. And now, to boot, he had a headache.

Letting out a sigh, he placed the essay on his table and rubbed his temple again. Hopefully this would at least let him pass though.

Alessa was excited for this class. Perhaps a bit too excited. When she came into the class, an obvious brightness to her face, and saw all the other students and their generally dreary looks she wondered if she'd missed something or if she was perhaps in the wrong room. She took a seat near Livi and Gabe, giving them both curious looks that failed to hide her visible, though luckily not overwhelming, enthusiasm. "This is literature class, right?" she asked them quietly as she pulled out her essay. Not only had she joined the class late, but she had found out about the assignment late too, so it wasn't necessarily what she would have liked to have written, but it could have been worse. She smoothed out the paper with thin fingers, trying to settle herself into a nice calm. Reading was a calm practice, after all.

The Time Traveler's Wife

On the surface The Time Traveler's Wife appears to be a simple love story, but within its depths the novel examines the struggles of meaningful relationships and the age old question of free will versus fate. Henry is a ghost who is unable to control his FEAR, an ability to travel through time. The book primarily follows Henry and his relationship with Claire, a young witch who comes to see him one day and claims they've met before, or at least she has met him. While Henry has never met Claire before, she has known him since she was a girl, as his future self visited him through time travel. The novel examines the struggles in their relationship, both in relation to his uncontrolled absences and time paradoxes, but also in regard to normal difficulties, such as the struggle to form a child within a pumpkin due to their differing races. Ultimately, Henry discovers his own death from his daughter in the future, and when the day comes he time travels and is dissipated by a spell cast by Claire's brother in the past. The lives of Claire and his daughter, continue, however, and his past self appears occasionally in their lives due to his ability, leaving them with the sense that he is gone, but never truly apart from them.

The largest question presented by this book is: where does fate begin and free will end? It is true that Henry never had the ability to choose his location of travel nor even control the ability, but there were choices that he made that influenced his life. What if he had never spoken to Claire as a child? What if he had not helped his future wife in creating a child in a pumpkin? Henry often knew about the past and the future, but in the end it was his choice to act as he did in each encounter. Or did he? This makes me wonder how different his life would have been if he had acted perhaps against what he knew would happen. Did fate know he would never act against what he knew or was that his decision?

This story not only challenges the mind, but the heart as well. It gives you issues of time and fate for the mind, but fills the heart with the strains of heart-felt relationships and sacrifice. I found myself musing over the book for a long time and would recommend it for the intellect and the casual reader both.

Ren was late, of course, although this time it was not from oversleeping because of staying up until the wee hours of the morning beating LW in Scario Cart. This time it was because as he'd been walking out the door to go meet Alessa, he'd been accosted first by an irritated lepus (Rhys, naturally) who wanted some snacks and then second by an angry phone call from none other than his father.

Needless to say, his morning had not gone well so far.

Slouching into the classroom, Ren spotted Gabrian sitting against the far wall, next to the green haired boil who he had seen a few times, but had never actually spoken with. Beside them was Alessa, looking very awake and slightly eager.

"I'm sorry I didn't come to pick you up this morning," he said as he came towards her, leaning down to brush a quick kiss to her cheek before flopping into the seat next to hers. Ren lifted a hand in greeting to the nix and Livi, flashing them both a smile before reaching into his binder, pulling out a crumpled piece of paper:

Catcher of the Eye
by J.W. Salivator

Uh. This is a book. About, uh. This one dude named Hold. He's this teenage demon who doesn't like conforming to society (who does?) so he talks back a lot and tends to go into a lot of internal monologuing about random things. Plus he thinks that everyone at his school are just fakes and that they're just acting a certain way so that they can look good.

That's probably why I like it. All of Hold's inner angst and his uncaring, "I don't give a crap what you think" sorta view of the world makes him pretty interesting, if I do say so myself. He's not your typical starstruck, starryeyed, moony teenage demon. Instead he's more realistic. The ending is kinda vague, but not too bad. I like that it lets the reader interpret for themselves what they think about it and about Hold.

And I like his sarcasm. He's an unconventional character.

The end..?

The class would be good, since he did adore reading and most of his relaxation time was spent with a good book. And since he picked up his mini pets, his usual literature now included pet books of various types. The more he looked at his report, the more he disliked it but it was too late to change it now. He'd have to definitely do better next time. Glancing up, he smiled warmly at Gabe and Alessa when he noticed them and waved. "Yes, it is, Miss Alessa. I can't wait for it to get started. It's going to be a lot of fun, I think."

Elizabeth Baines
Year 1, Literature Class 2

Pride and Prejudice
by Janet Austin

This classic is a love story, written during a time where prejudices among the different races of Halloween was painfully obvious, and it was considered a taboo to have interracial reunions. The plot of the story is driven by the situation a Reaper family, the Bonnets - a father, a mother and their five daughters - was in. While Mr Bonnet was not a rich Reaper, upon his death, his possessions, including the house, would be inherited by a cousin rather than by Mrs Bonnet or any of their five daughters. This would render the womenfolk homeless upon his death - this worries Mrs Bonnet, and she is eager to see her five daughters married off to prevent such a fate.

The story itself, however, is centered around their second daughter, a ghoul by the name of Elizabeth, and her relationship and changing impressions of a Pride Demon by the name of Darcy, over time. Among her sisters, Elizabeth was considered the wittiest although she had been described as 'handsome' rather than 'beautiful' due to her stronger features and tomboy-like behavior. While Darcy was considered a wealthy and dashing gentleman, he appeared to throughly be a Pride Demon - when they first met at a party held mainly for Reapers, Darcy was cold towards those who attended the party, causing Elizabeth to instantly dislike him. He too, found Elizabeth to be unlike what a proper lady should be.

To summarize their relationship, Darcy started to be attracted to Elizabeth, paying more attention to her. His pride, however, only caused more misunderstandings between them and stopped him from trying to clear these misunderstandings. He proposed to her, but it was at a time where her prejudice towards him was strong; thus, it did not come as a surprise that she rejected him. They then had a heated argument, where Darcy addressed Elizabeth's prejudices against him and caused her much embarrassment as she realized that she had been prideful too.

After that incident, however, Elizabeth found out that her first impression of Darcy was wrong, and that the Pride Demon might be prideful, but he had a gentle heart. As her impression of him begun to change, she accepted his second proposal. Their reunion was not without its challenges, from both society and family, but they got through in the end, when they learnt to let go of their pride and prejudice towards each other.

I love both Elizabeth and Darcy, as well as the dynamics of their relationship. Being a Demon, I had noticed that many students have a rather bad impression of my kind, stereotyping us as being a prideful, power-hungry race without first understanding that each Demon is an individual and that we differ. However, that statement is not without its truths - thus I can understand why Elizabeth needed time to see Darcy for who he is, and for Darcy to accept his own feelings for a "lower class" Reaper... For me, my own mother told me not to fall for anyone but another Demon, but while I do not wish to defy her, I see no reason why interracial relationships are such a big deal. Thus, while such prejudices still exist in today's society, I am glad to note that it is no longer as prominent!

Elizabeth. She shared a name with the book's heroine; perhaps that's why Pride and Prejudice had been her favorite book since she picked it up at a book store. Perhaps that was when she started looking for her 'Mr Darcy'... Handing in her assignment to the literature professor with a polite dip of her head and a smile, the Spider Demoness made her way to an empty seat in front of Livi (he would block her otherwise), giving the boil a delighted smile as well as a 'Hello!' Then, she wasted no time in settling down, grabbing out her pen and notebook as she waited for class to start - she had been waiting for this! Literature was one of her favorite classes after all.

As more students filed into class, he was straightened his jacket cuffs and his neck wraps, since they had been bothering him all morning. When Ren greeted him, he waved back, though he wasn't completely sure who this boil was. It took a second or two to recall that he had seen him at the Truth or Dare game, surrounded by ghouls. Oh, he was that one... but the way he treated Alessa made his mind work a bit before he grinned. Ah, that was definitely sweet.

Next came Lizzy, responding to her happy hello with one of his own. It was good to know that many people he was familiar with was coming to class.

( If it's not too late to join, Daisuke would still like to be apart of the class. ><)

Daisuke slipped in to class pretty late no thanks to his little minipet being extremely fussy which he had to take her out before he came here. Getting lost was never fun, it was a good job he had over heard some students talking and making their way here or else he wondered if he would of ever remembered. Everyone was already scratching away at their papers, some already sat at their seat done. He quickly shuffled in to one of the empty seats and took out his paper, eying what he had wrote the night before on 'a spur of the moment.' He tipped his head up just a little, peaking through the stray black bangs that were sweeping his face to try see the teacher. He was so done for. He decided to shift it back to the paper and keep his eyes there...

Shivers

The book I have chosen to write about is called 'shivers' I chose this because, one of the main characters 'Sam' I found I could relate to him, the way he feels throughout the story and the high expectations the main pack leader holds over his shoulders. The story revolves around a pack of werewolves and a ghoul, who was once dragged away by the pack to be eaten however, Sam, steps in and saves the poor ghoul.

The ghoul became fascinated after that, over the pack and more precisely over Sam. They watched each other for years, torn between longing and the cautious pack lingering behind him. Finally, the ghoul decided to approach him and both give in to temptation and desire which only causes more drama from then out.

Sam has a lot of memories that unfold within the book, the pack leader says hes the best of them, and he feels it is his duty to protect it but his wish is to be with the ghoul he loves and do his own thing, make his own way in the world except there are obstacles in his way. New pack members and an old one that wants Sam for herself. To be the next 'alpha's.'

The pack is always described as the ghosts of the forest. Always having to hide themselves away from others. Which also related to me in a personal way, I understand what they're longing for, like Sam longs for this one 'ghoul' he has fallen in love with. They're bitter and in some way, searching for acceptance however they can never have that because they have been told it's only the pack that matters, the rest become before all else.

They're lost in their ways and appear blinded by opportunities. The way emotions are described and the way the author views lifestyle and adapts it to a more personal level, that makes you feel like you're living their unlife instead of your own, makes it a good book to just escape in to, perhaps that's what makes it one of my favorite books. After all, everyone needs an escape once in a while.

Astra knew this was going to be one of those long and boring classes that seemed to dragon on forever and talk about boring stuff she wasn't at all interested in. But alas, it seemed she had to do this if she wanted to graduate. And apparently she already had to write out a essay. Sigh...

Turning up to class, she had her essay all written out, thankfull that it was over and done with

Tricksters Galore

This is a great book if you're looking for ideas on possible pranks. It's main character is a pixie who goes about playing tricks on everyone, and when he gets found out he thinks up a clever plan to escape!

One example is when he comes across a group of ogres, and he pretends to be a ghost and scares them silly. But they find him, and then they spend hours trying to catch him. Eventually they do and say they're going to eat him, but he convinces them to let him go because he isn't worth all the trouble, and he knew were there was a big tree filled with apples, and he would tell them if they'd let him go.. They were all so hungry that they believed him, and he led them deep into a forest and got them completely lost!

then one day he gets tricked himself, and almost get killed but somehow he escapes! I love this book cause it's so much fun, and the main character is really funny and charismatic

oh, and I can relate to him easily! Not just because he's a pixie, but everyone calls him short too, but he always gets them back, and every time he does it makes me laugh. I've read this book countless time since I was a kid

Sixteen brave students decided that they wanted to get their literature requirements out of the way early. Most just seemed to save it until as late in their schooling as possible. But, there were a couple in the group that seemed like they actually wanted to be there though. Dr. Alabaster smiled -- rather, almost smiled -- at this prospect. Hopefully, their excitement would be contagious. It never was though. He had been teaching long enough to know that. You don't get to be old and bitter for no reason.

"Thank you everyone for having your essays ready. Then again, I shouldn't have to thank you for doing your job and what you're supposed to do. I suppose though that giving some positive reinforcement every now and then won't hurt."

Secretly, it did hurt. Dr. Alabaster made a confused scowl as he suddenly felt a small stabbing pain in his abdomen.

"Ahem. What I want you to do next is simple, and usually a student's favorite part of the writing process; peer review. You young folk are shameless when it comes to talking to each other during class all the time. At least this way, you'll be talking about something constructive.

"I have assigned each of you a partner. I don't care if you're friends. I don't care if you're enemies. You are now partners in the journey though the land of literature. The two of you must swap your essays, read them over, and then discuss the quality of them. I want you to give your partner a grade. Mind you, this is not the final grade they will receive. In fact, the truthfulness of how you grade them will more effect you. Do a poor job of reviewing your partner's essay, and you will receive a poor grade."

Dr. Alabaster wrote the list of partners on the dusty, old chalkboard.

Livi Addams -- Gabrian
Julian Thanatos -- Aksaja
L.C. Malodore -- Elizabeth Baines
Calder -- Riley
Alessa -- Tsetsiliya Pavlova
Coralie Bahest -- Daisuke
Sin Err -- Holly
Renaissance -- Astra

"You have the full class period to do this. You may talk to others who are not your partner, but I should advise you that this would not be a good use of your time."

Daisuke waited, just staring at his paper until it zoomed in to mindless space. The only thing, other than the chatter that filled the room around him, that snapped him out of his trance was when the teacher spoke up once more. Quickly snapping his head up, he eyed the teacher breathing a silent sigh of relief that he hadn't been swatted for coming in 'latish' and listened carefully. They were partnered up. He was curious, letting his eyes scan for who his partner was with every letter that was scribbled upon the chalkboard.

Coralie.

....

Wasn't that the girl with the man-eating hat? Or, what rather looked like a cannibal hat. He slowly looked to the side to the new found partner in class. He hadn't ever spoken to her, or heard anything of her. Just, the hat was more noticable than anything else. He debated a while, on making a move to go over to her and swap papers. Idly, he just sat there until he was kicking himself. He got up, lazily grabbing the edge of his paper in between his fingers and walked over to Coralie.

He was starting to wish he had put a hell of a lot more effort in to this paper now someone else was going to read it... Maybe she felt the same? Who knew. He smiled approaching her. "Hey. Guess were partners. Um... " He held out his paper not really knowing what to say other than.

"Shall we get started?" He gestured to a seat next to her, hoping that it would be ok to sit there.

Lord of the Rings

I haven't read anything ever until this assignment. So I hope this sounds okay because I have no idea what you want.

The book I read was about a poor misunderstood Lord. He was going to rule all of his land but then he lost his ring. I guess that let him rule. Really it was stolen right off his finger. Jerk, I'd have gone after him myself but I guess he needed to fix his finger.

Anyway. He sends out some of his followers to get it back from the gnome that has it now. But for some reason the powerful beasts cannot find him. To help enforce his power he destroys a lot of people. I wish there was more description on the death.

Well the gnome seems to keep with the hiding but more people die. Some other stuff happened too, it was a long book. But near the end the dark lord attacks a city and almost claims it. Though while that happened the gnome snuck in to the lord's place. You think it would have been guarded better? Gnome almost destroys ring but the lord gets it in the end.

Everyone else dies in the end. It was good. Took a little long to get to the end, I think he should have tried to find the gnome earlier.

Um. I didn't really feel all that connected. I'd probably had been more ruthless. How hard is it to find a ring. Or really was it that easy to loose? I learned some good strategies though and some things to never do.

Sin glanced up to see her partner's name written on the board and blinked, huh she didn't know Holly. Then she glanced around and moved to stand to sit next to her partner. She located her by glancing at the names on people papers while clutching her own paper tight. She really didn't want to share it now, it seemed so personal. When she spotted Holly she smiled, oh hey it was that foxy ghoul she had seen in the graveyard of the human world. Well she seemed nice enough, maybe they could focus on her paper more then anything. She slid into a seat beside her and set her paper facedown before offering a hand.

"Hello Holly? I'm Sin Err, looks like we're partners. Let's start with your paper first?"

Except she didn't want to give the other ghoul a chance to say no so she quickly slipped Holly's paper onto her desk and started to read it. Fairly quickly Sin started to get worried, Holly's paper was straightforward and simple. There wasn't anything very complex to really pull from it...other then a possible fascination on Holly's part with death and destruction. The premise of the book wasn't even really well defined and Sin hadn't read it before either. She glanced back up at the top of Holly's paper and found something she could at least ask while trying to decide what kind of grade she should give,

"So....you've never read any books until this?" She was surprised, her parents had her privately tutored before attending Amityville and Sin had already read and learned about all sorts of subjects. She had almost forgotten the privileges that her family's wealth and standing had afforded her. How could Holly have never taken the time to sit back and enjoy a good book?
PostPosted: Fri Jan 28, 2011 4:37 pm

Elizabeth Baines? Malodore didn't recognize the name offhand... hrm. Who had that been? The plague doctor glanced around, then raised its voice slightly as it re-read the list aloud, in hopes that Elizabeth would hear it and rescue it from its lack of knowledge. "Elizabeth Baines... hmm..."

... fingers crossed.

Seeing who his partner was made him a tad bit surprised. Well, least he wouldn't have to move very far to talk to him. That was a plus, since it seemed Gabe looked a bit tired. "You all right, my good man? You look rather exhausted there. Seems we're partners in this lovely assignment of ours."
