It seemed like a simple enough game, although watching Barth wasn't teaching her as much as she would like about strategy and effective attacks. So, she turned her full attention to the screen, and began flailing her character at Barth's repeatedly. Then, something odd happened. The screen flashed, and her character jumped and kicked at the same time. She looked down at the controller as if it had grown a third head, and then turned to Barth.

What button did I push to make that happen? She asked quietly. She thought she'd figured each button's use out already..

"It's a combo. Different button combos do different things. Like, err,"

His ninja suddenly flashed across the screen, then landed a devastating uppercut to Riley's ninja. The red bar launched all the way to maximum.

A sudden stream of butterflies launched out of Riley's ninja, and its gaunt, grim face suddenly flushed with life. It lay on the ground in a cheery pose, picking and smelling a flower happily, no longer interested in fighting. The words

REANIMATION

appeared over both characters.

"This game had a bit of struggle with the EekSRB," Barth filled in, "High levels of friendliness. Not suitable for children. Some of the Reanimations are a bit graphic."

Riley almost dropped her controller in horror as the cloud of butterflies exploded from her character, and he fleshed out healthily. Euugh. She muttered, her expression tensing in disgust. That's almost as cheerful as Christmastown. She turned away from the sight, clearly disturbed, and her eyes settled on Barth with an incredulous stare.

Why would anybody want to play this?

"Some people like a challenge. High scores, and so forth. I think it's an enormous waste of time. ...Thus the err, personal appeal."

He hadn't factored in that Riley was a girl, and might not be able to handle the levels of cheer. It was pixelated, anyway.

"Christof likes Smash Quest."

The game announced,

Round Two.

With both characters looking like their Undead selves again.

Competition. She could see the appeal. The graphics, however, were a painful turn-off. Her stomach was still churning a little bit, but she proceeded to give it another try.

Combos.. combinations. There were four buttons on the right side, as well as 8 different possibilities for directional toggle. There were also two buttons at the top of the controller, which she had only noticed now. Her eyes glazed over for a moment as she performed a few simple mathematical computations, during which time Barth's character would probably get an easy hit or two in. When her eyes refocused, she began methodically attempting every single possible combination available.

Some of them worked. Most of them did nothing. Every time one combination caused a new move, she filed the combination and it's effect away for later use. Her clawed fingers clicked at the buttons in perfect series order, until she had performed all 196 possible double button combinations in precise order.

Barth's character looked like he was swaying, she wondered if that was a good sign.

Hm.. she paused there, and looked down at the controller. I suppose there's probably three button combinations as well.. Her eyes glazed over again.

"You can do a finisher," Barth said helpfully.

The screen seemed to agree, giving the same verbal and visual prompt. FINISH HIM.

"There are different ones." Considering the way Barth fought, which was for the most part slowly with a little jabbing, it hadn't been hard to avoid him and test the moveset through the course of the game. Barth's primary tactic involved crouching in a corner and swiping (belatedly) whenever she got close.

A finisher? She repeated, once her eyes had re-focused on the screen. She tapped the toggle a few times, until she was standing right by his character. Then, she did something that Riley would never, ever normally do.

She button mashed.

Her man reached out and blew a cloud of dust at Barth's character, enveloping the ninja completely. The dust dissipated into a shower of sparkles and glitter, leaving Barth's character transformed into a precious, adorable, pink-skinned baby - complete with rattle and pealing laughter.

BABALITY

Riley cringed and looked at Barth guiltily, though her eyes sparkled with mischief. Ouch. Sorry.

Regardless of how horrifically cheerful some of the graphic exchanges were, Riley was starting to like this game. A little bit.

"Got the hang of it, err, pretty quickly," Barth said, as if suspicious of the assessment. The scene rebooted again, both fighters rotting and apparently intent on ignoring their brief adventures in flower-picking and infancy.

The screen announced confidently,

ROUND THREE.
...

FIGHT.

I get the hang of most things rather quickly, once I've figured out the methodology behind the -

Her character took a rather nasty set of combination attacks that she couldn't get out of, and her thought process instantly returned to choosing, and then using, various combos to make up for what she'd lost. No sense getting cocky just yet.

You keep - Her thoughts were interrupted as she determinedly tried to grab him and failed. - You keep hiding in the corner - She backed up, and tried to high kick, but it was near-impossible to hit someone with Barth's level of experience at hiding in a corner. Her frustrating attempts to knock him out of the corner kept leaving her vulnerable, and she let out a growl.

"Move spamming," Barth filled in, "is the official technique I'm employing. Not to be confused with button mashing, although they sometimes correlate."

His guy continued to make sluggish swipes at Riley's character whenever she got close, although it did seem easier to hit him just after an attack.

Ugh! Riley let out a sound of disgust, and finally stopped trying to snatch Barth's character out from his corner. She was rewarded with an uppercut to the face, and the flashing lights of a Game Over screen once her character finally hit the ground. She set the controller on the floor, and turned her head up to look at Barth carefully.

If we ever spar together, please do not employ that technique on me. I will get entirely too frustrated. She stood up from the chair, straightened her dress out, and plucked the sugar up from the floor. Then her eyes settled on the sloth demon once more, vaguely thinned. I'm not pleasant when I am frustrated. Then they crescented in lieu of a smile. Thank you for the sugar, though. And for showing me your game. It was.. stimulating.

It wasn't.

She waved her fingers slowly, and headed for the door. If you ever need something, feel free to come by. She called out over her shoulder before leaving his dorm.

"Oh yes, um, actual sparring, ha ha." Barth called after her, hoping it never came to that.

Especially not with someone who could tear through a movepool like a supercomputer. Still, the experience had been valuable. And it was always good to get to know one's neighbors.

"Door's always open, if you need more sugar."
