Calder was a hearty does of annoying and sweet to most people, but that's what you got when you didn't grow up with other children, didn't learn what not to do, and had pony eyes that could be used as a weapon. Not as effective as a reaper mind you, but he knew how to work it at times. Then again, he was almost always genuine in how he displayed his feelings.
For example, when Ren divided his land and pointed to where Calder could start his garden, okaying the idea that they could be garden buddies, the kelpie turned and broke out into a full grin. "Really?! That all there is mine?" Of course he gestured to the whole side of the world on the other side of the dirt line. Moving to his hooves in his own horsey way (hands flat down, push tail up, then stand fully), Calder trotted over and looked at the land that would become his own. Short of sticking a flag that said 'Calder-land', he stood on the untouched farmland with the pride of a recent settler. Here to conquer the wilds and produce food. To live off the land – though he already did that anyways being a horseish monster.
Already eager, he set about clearing his own patch of dirt, and got back down to plough the ground with his hands, pushing all the dirt and debris away into a mountain. "Yup, I helped plant our family owns a bit of land. It's not that great for planting when it comes to vegetables, but it's good for herbs and mushrooms. We have a dry enough patches here and there for other things." Living near a river that tended to flood and make the ground a bog from time to time didn't really help for producing great fields of vegetables and other delicious foods. "I can weed though. If you want your garden weeded, I can do that!" Of course, weeding for him was more or less taking a small snack and munching on them. "..and I'll be careful next time." Instead of just trotting all over the garden.
Getting all types of filthy, Calder dug into the ground with plenty of vigor and little in the way of knowing what he was doing. All he knew so far was that you cleared the ground of all the other stuff to just leave dirt. Made holes. Put stuff in the holes, Covered holes. Then waited. Already he knew he was going to grow sugar cubes and carrots, and wondered what other agricultural goods he could produce.

Ren had not thought his making a squiggly line to divide their spaces into two separate areas would have made Calder happy, but the kelpie seemed excited, a wide smile on his face as he pranced over to the other side, looking very much like someone who had just realized that they had something special. Either that, or someone who had just discovered something very, very good. Whatever the case, Calder was obviously very pleased with this idea. The kelpie was already moving to get the land ready for gardening.
"Hmmmm that's interesting," Ren said, genuinely meaning it. "I had no idea that you were so knowledgeable when it came to gardening."
Surprisingly, the words were not said with any sort of sarcasm. While Calder did not exactly seem the prim and proper type (especially not with all that debris in his hair), he had not really expected the kelpie to be a gardener.
...though he really should not have been that surprised, seeing as how Calder was a carrot hog and was now eating the weeds. Ren shrugged. Whatever works, I guess.
Moving over to where the kelpie was, Ren squatted down, moving to dig into the dirt with his own hands, helping to make small holes. "So," he said as he worked. "What are you going to plant in your garden?"

Not shy about getting dirty, Calder was far from the prim and proper type, though it would be rather surprising considering how refined his parents did look. As he moved sticks and twigs about, pushing them off to the outskirts of his new garden, he gave a little shrug to Ren. "We grew near our house year round. My mother knows more about herbs and plants than I do. She always liked that stuff when she was growing up, and it meant he didn't have to rush to the nearest mad doctor when we got sick." Which would have been a ways to gallop to if they had to pay a visit. "We grew vegetables, herbs, and oats." Common horse foods which wasn't surprising to anyone. "I never really did much aside from the weeding." The larger labor was up to his parents who made short work of it. When you have two kelpies ploughing and planting, it wasn't too hard to get the job done. "We didn't have much suitable land for it anyways. Too much water."
Once everything was cleared, he started to dig holes. He didn't have seeds yet, but having them already there made him feel productive. At the mention of what he'd have, he smiled. "Well, I'd like carrots, and some vegetables. There are certain plants that taste really good too. No oats though." He stuck his tongue out at that. What a bland plant. "….then some sugar." Oh, he loved sugar. "I wonder if I could plant apples too." He looked over and nodded. Yeah, he was sure he could fit a tree in here somewhere.

"Huh," said Ren, tilting his head and slanting a glance upwards to look curiously at Calder. "That sounds rather like a smart thing to know. I haven't really looked into planting any medicinal herbs or plants, but now that you mention it..." Ren cast a look back at his own garden, musing to himself as he tapped his chin. Medicinal herbs COULD be helpful sometime in the future...
He wrinkled his nose at the idea of oats. Though Ren was a vegetarian, and quite a serious one at that, the idea of eating oats was rather off-putting. He pushed his hands into the soft dirt, scooping out a handful and dropping it to the side. Dig, scoop, dump. Lather, rinse, repeat. "Oats sound rather revolting," Ren agreed, and pushed all of the little piles of dirt he was making into one larger pile, moving over a few feet to start on a new row of holes. Though he supposed he had better get started on his homework sometime soon, Ren much preferred gardening. It was relaxing, cathartic. He enjoyed the feel of it, the way it seemed to calm him.
Though - "...sugar?" Ren repeated, looking at the kelpie. "Erm. I'm...I'm not quite sure...how to grow that. And if you want apples, you'll probably be waiting several years for them," he pointed out. "Since you'd have to wait for the tree to be full grown, and that'll take about, oh, five or six years...ish."

"FIVE OR SIX YYEEEARRRSS?" Calder had stopped his digging to look over at Ren, aghast at such a wait. "At most I thought it would just take a season! I can't wait that long! I'll be OLD!" He was NOT waiting that long for a apple. Still, he did like apples.
Frowning, he looked at his garden and then perked up. "I'll just find some to cast a magic spell to make them grow fast. There." Problem solved, and Calder thought he was being very smart about it. "....what are you planting?" He asked, looking over.

"Well, we could always find somewhere that has already mostly grown apple trees and plant those," Ren said, in attempt to placate the now wailing Calder. He gave the other boil and exasperated look. "And you will not be old in five or six years, mind you."
Ren rolled his eyes, dropping the topic after the "I'll just find someone to cast a magic spell" comment. "What am I plating?" he repeated, glancing over at his garden. "Um. Probably some carrots, some lettuce. Maybe some zucchini and squash, though I'm not sure yet. Tomatoes."
Something hit his nose. Ren glanced upwards. A raindrop? "But it seems as if we might have to hold off on that," he added, as another drop plunked onto his face. "Since we're about to get soaked, I suggest we move indoors."
A pause. Then - "And next time I'll expect some help planting those carrots, Calder." Another pause. Then -
"Don't be late."

Calder was a kelpie and as such, didn't mind the water at all. The wetter, the better. As Ren made to go, Calder waved goodbye. "I'll see you then." He said, perky and humming his carrot song as he went back to fixing his garden. He'd stop once the rain was too much and made everything into mud, but for now, he was having a very pleasant day. Thoughts of sugar trees and carrots danced in his head, and he continued to play in the dirt, working on HIS garden.
