The Professor lead the way his lab, where the Professor did all sorts of experiments. Jack thought to himself, The Professor is known for his wacky inventions, like the "ear communicator", which requires a special crystial to make it function, and the "hopper", which is said to function like a actual insect, able to fly and eat! I wonder what he intends to do with the sword...
"Jack, I must say this is an rather impressive find, even by my standards." The Professor started to say. "I travel all over this world, and some of The Forbidden Ground in search of relics such as these!" The Professor suddently stopped, and turned around. "Jack, I must ask... Although I believe I already know the answer. Did you already try to disassemble it, or tinker with in any way?" Jack replied, "Well of course I did. I'm amazed by the invention, and how advanced it is! The gears even repaired themselves! We are nowhere CLOSE to being able to create such a wonder! How did we lose such a wonderful process?"
The Professor, who turned around and continued to walk half-way through Jack's question, said, "Jack, this world is not as it used to be... Many years ago, a great war happened between our glorious Steamer Society, and the backwatered Kante. It was horrible, the lives lost. Entire towns and cities, all destroyed."
"Yes, the Forbidden Era, we all know of it. Terrible war that claimed thousands, and cursed millions more. What about it?" Jack replied hastily. He was usually eager to learn more about the War and especially of the Forbidden Era the Era where the War taken place, however, his interest in this new weapon defeated all other questions he had.
The Professor chuckled and said, "Well, that's a first I heard from you. This sword must interest you a great deal to just brush aside the Forbidden Era." Jack simply nodded, and the Professor continued, "Well, what most don't know, and probably not even you know, that before the war, the Steamers and Kante were once... united."
Jack was shocked when he heard this. He stopped in his tracks, and exclaimed, "They were UNITED!"
The Professor merely chuckled, and said, with Jack running to catch up, "Why yes Jack. There was just one race, from what the evidence I gathered said, and that man discovered steam and how to use magic. Which came first, chances are, I'll never find out, but that's a different story. So, as the studies shown, steam was found, and man found ways to use it to create civilization. They cut trees to make houses and buildings. And in man marvelous inventions, we found a way to refine metal! Glorious day it was for man. Yet, the Kante, who lived at one with nature, resented this, and pleaded with man to stop destroying nature. However, man know that it was for the best, and cast aside the Kante's warning.
"After that... No one knows. Merely folklores and tall-tales based on legends of yore. However, I always had a theory... That Steamers and Kante once live in peace, and created wonderful technology together. And if what you said about the sword is correct... this might be one invention that used both steam and magic together."
Jack almost trip over himself when he heard that. "Wait, wait, wait.... Steam AND Magic? Together? In one weapon? Professor, that's hard to believe, and you always told such outrageous stories."
The Professor smirked, "Yes, hard to believe, yet... You have seen it for yourself. This sword.. No, this miracle is proof. They were once used in unison. What happened to said inventions, is anyones guess."
They reached a door at the end of the rather long walk to his special laboratory. "Jack, you will be the first to see this laboratory. It's where all my most groundbreaking work was created."
The Professor opened the door in the most lavish way he can and exclaimed, " WELCOME JACK! TO THE LAB OF ADAM!"

User ImageMit meandered into the factory and looked around. No Jack. A whole bunch of guys who resembled Jack, but no Jack. She would've asked, but she didn't really wanna risk...
"Hey, kid. You lost or something?" a guy asked, coming up behind her and grabbing her shoulder. Instinctively, she whipped her gun around and landed it on her shoulder, aiming it directly at his face. He took a step back, then laughed.
"That's quite a gun you got there, boy. Too bad it don't work." he said with a grin. He seemed nice enough, middle-aged, rough, experienced... Mit frowned, then lowered her gun and set it on the ground. He patted her on the head.
"It's got some failed parts, it does." he explained. "Too bad I can't help you out. What you wanna do is find a kid named Jack. He split about an hour ago, said he had somethin to do. there's a friend of his, though, that lives about a few minutes thataway. A whiz, he is. Tell him Nate sent'cha and he'll have that thing running in no time."
Mit nodded once and lifted the gun up again, strapping it around her body.
"Say, kid, you got a name?" Nate asked just as she was about to leave. She turned around and blinked, shaking her head with a mischevious grin. Nate scratched the back of his head, and Mit smirked, darting back into the crowd.

Lina rolled her eyes at him when he teased her about her 'precious trees'. Of course, she didn't expect him not to tease her about it. "You know, you should really care more about my 'precious trees' seeing as they create the precious oxygen that your flames need to stay sustained...." She pointed out, also in a teasing tone, though she was being completely honest about the oxygen part. Plants were useful like that. They helped in little ways most didn't think about. Like how grass and plants held the soil in place so when it rained, it didn't get washed away.

"Plus, it's not like you need practice...I know you're skilled with the bow and arrow..." She trailed off in a half compliment. She'd seen him practice before as she had to pass through. After much of the Kante's practice sessions, she'd go back and check on the trees afterwards. It was just her nature to do so. Just like she'd stop by the farms around the town and check on their crops from time to time.

At Ryul's question, Lina paused a moment to think. What did she have in mind to do? "Actually, as long as I'm out of the greenhouse for awhile, I'm good. If I stay in there too long, I tend to obsess over my work...So, something distracting would be good.." She mused aloud, she herself unsure of what to do. She watched as Kowe got up and took to the woods, probably to hunt. .

It's astounding;
Time is fleeting;
Madness takes its toll.
But listen closely...
Not for very much longer.
I've got to keep control.

Kesi Nérine Tarn

User ImageKesi stumbled through the library, well, more like a storage room, that was in her grandparent's house. It was actually where she spent most of her time. Mainly because it was one of the only places she wouldn't get ogled at because of her odd fascination with the Steamers. Most people her age, or her parent's age didn't get it. Fine by her, she'd have to educate them some day. Kesi stepped over odd boxes and crates and wound her way around stacks of various items. Her grandfather put anything he thought was worth saving into the fairly sized room. After fifty or so years, it tended to get a bit crowded.

Kesi didn't mind at all. It was this room that she found various articles of history that fascinated her. Ever since that first day she was led through the winding path in the room and given her beloved pocket watch, she had a fascination with the room and the steamers. Her grandfather would tell her stories of how they used to work together to make marvelous inventions. He knew so well because he was one of them working with the Steamers.

He had shown her old schematics of inventions he had worked on. Swords, guns, clocks. The pocket watch she now owned had been one of those items. It was her most treasured items, and she never went anywhere without it being concealed on her person. She didn't have to be told twice about how valuable it had been, or how disliked it may be.

Kesi grew to be fascinated with the past, and time itself. She asked to hear stories as often as she could. Especially on the first cooperation between the Steamers and the Kante. She knew that when the two groups worked together, they could do wonders. It was a shame that their differences tore them apart.

I remember doing the time-warp
Drinking those moments when
The Blackness would hit me
And the void would be calling...
Let's do the time-warp again.
Let's do the time-warp again.

Steamer

User ImageMit approached the large building that was the Professor's laboratory and living quarters. It didn't seem too imposing... although Mit had learned early on that most things were never as they seemed to be... a nindo under which she lived day in and day out. Her gun weighed down on her shoulders as she approached the door, and she began to wonder who this mysterious professor was. Was he one of those mad scientist people Junebug had told her about? The ones that were totally convinced that magic and steam used to work together?
God, how she hated those people!
Meddling fools that used to show up on her doorstep, begging her to make a donation to their lost cause. But the thought was utterly ridiculous. Kantes and Steamers? United? She had never been presented with a more abstract idea. It seemed silly to her. Why would anyone who hated Steamers as much as the Kantes did ever want to work together... for anything? Ungrateful tricksters who had nothing better to do with their lives than to harass the Steamer socity with their endless threats... and her father had gotten plenty of those threats when Mit was still at home.
But who was to say that this professor was one of those people? He may have just been a genius who contributed to the Steamer society like most other geniuses did. In fact, Mit was almost fully convinced that he would be like those scientists she had met at the invention conventions that she had often been forced to attend. Raising her hand to the doorbell, she rang it twice, then waited patiently for a response.

Ryul laughed. "When aren't you obsessing over your work?" he asked. It seemed like she was always in that greenhouse, working on some plant or other. He smiled at her compliment, "Thank you," he said. He lifted a hand and caused a small ball of fire to hover over his hand, trying to think of something to do. Then he thought of something. Beyond the hill they were on, there was a small batch of trees. On the other side of the trees, there was a lake. They could go swimming. "How about taking a swim?" he asked. He sometimes liked to go out and just float in the water and relax. On a day like this, swimming sounded good.

Jack was speechless. He has seen labs before, yet none as grand nor as glorious as this one. "Professor...What is this place?" The Professor just laughed and said, "The Lab of Adam. Where the worlds most revolutionary work was done, and will continue to be done. This is where I and many, many more invented the original blueprint for The Dirigible. This is where The Submersible was created! This, my dear boy. Is where history is made."
Jack walked around the lab, gazing at it's wonder. He heard the doorbell ring, but neither he or the Professor paid much attention to it. "Professor, even I must say that I was terribly wrong about you. I know that those rumors aren't true, but this just proves that you aren't as mad as they say." Jack chuckled, and waited to hear a witty remark from the Professor as usual. What he heard next though, surpised him.
The sound of a trigger being pulled.
Jack let out a nervous laugh, and turned around slowly. Yet it was as he thought.
The Professor.
Standing behind him.
With a pistol in his hand.
"Professor... Come on now, this isn't funny." Jack said cautiously as he slowly backed away.
"Now, now, my dear boy. You know I'm not one to joke around with something as important as inventions. Especially not one such as this marvelous find." The Professor said in a calm, cold voice. "I must say Jack... You really surprised me when I saw this. Ages I searched, and I couldn't find a SINGLE PIECE of evidence! And here you are, a simple coal worker who tries to make a so-called honest dollar, who managed to discover this jewel!"
Jack began eyeing around, looking for a way out, but he was cornered. He began a way to calculate a way out of this predicament, and quickly found a simple solution. "Professor, calm down now... I'm sure that no one has to know that I found this weap-" "YOU BLASTED FOOL! It's not just a WEAPON! It's a MASTERPIECE! IT IS PERFECTION" The Professor swang the pistol at Jack's face in a fury, but Jack expect such a reaction, and dodged it, then landed a hard blow to his abdomen. The Professor coughed hard, falling to his knees. "...Curse you.. Jack.. I will get... cough, cough I will get you!"
Jack, speechless that the Professor would ever do such a thing, took a few steps back, then stopped. Why Professor... What would cause you to do such a thing... Jack then proceded to kick away the pistol, took the sword, and proceded to run back to the front door.

User ImageNo one was answering the door, and Mit was slowly getting impatient. What could they be doing in there? Was everything alright? It shouldn't take someone a million years to answer the door! Suddely, there was commotion inside the house.
What the... what's going on? Mit thought as she heard noises behind the door. She put her ear against the metal and listened carefully.
"... must say, Jack... you really surprised me..."
"... come on now... isn't funny..."
"... marvelous find..."
"... MASTERPIECE! IT IS PERFECTION!!..."

Mit put her gun down and raised her fist up to the door shakily. She knocked once.
"Jack?" she asked hesitantly, for once letting her voice sound. It was high and girly, a stark contrast to her boyish demeanor. "Jack, are you in there?" She knocked again, this time harder and more frantically as the screaming grew louder. "Jack!" she squeaked. "Jack, what's going on?? Jack, are you hurt? JACK!!"
Footsteps were rushing towards the door, and Mit hoisted her gun back onto her shoulder. She knew it wouldn't work, but maybe it was worth a shot if she believed hard anough...

Jack ran towards the door when he heard someone knocking. He started to look around. Come on, there's gotta be something to protect myself here... He looked at the sword, and gripped it hard. Well, it is a weapon... He walked slowly to the door, when he heard a familiar voice coming from behind it. Mit? Was is she doing here? He opened the door to see the muzzle of her huge gun pointed straight at his face. Yet he didn't blink.
Jack smirked. "Uh.... You don't intend on shotting that thing, do you? You'll just end up breaking the barrel, and destroying the charging handle."

User Image"Jack!" Mit exclaimed, putting the gun down. She hugged him, then took a step back. "Jack, are you alright? What's going on?" She tried to look behind him, but she proved too short. "Is everything alright? Are you hurt? I heard screaming!"
True, Mit was something of a worrywart, but she had good reason to be paranoid, with half the Society hunting for her. That and she was generally very afraid when it came to her friends. She stared at Jack, wide eyed and frightened. She scolded herself for being such a wimp... but as Jack had just stated, her gun wasn't working, so she was utterly defenseless.

Jack hugged Mit hard. It was good to see a friendly face after what happened with the Professor. The Professor... Jack then snapped back to reality, and looked at her. "Mit, there's no time to explain right now. We gotta get moving."
Jack was about to close the door, then abruptly stopped. "Wait..." Jack ran back inside, and got his bag, and quickly scanned the bookshelf for 2 books. Where are you.... There you are! He grabbed two books, stuffed them down his bag, and ran outside.
As he turned to close the door, he say the Professor charging his way to the door. "JACK! Come back with my masterpiece!"
Jack quickly closed the door, and retrieved bits of scrap metal, and a small copper tin.
He quickly picked out the most strategic places in the metal-framed door, and turned on the tin, which threw out a highly concentrated flame. "Cover your eyes Mit!" He closed his eyes carefully, then put the scrap metal on the door, and fused it with the door and the frame.
"There, that should buy us sometime." He said as he put away the tin. "Lets go back to my place. I'll explain what happened."

Lina laughed a little at his statement. Ryul was right. It did seem to others that she did obsess over her work. But sometimes it wasn't really work to her. It was fun. However, Lina knew she needed social interaction. It was no good being anti social and a hermit. Besides, she liked talking too much."Hey...I try not to obsess too much..." She trailed off with a smirk.

Lina somewhat blushed when he told her 'thank you'. However, it could be seen as just a reaction to the sunlight. She watched with a mix of awe and caution as he played with his fire. Flames were both beautiful and dangerous entity. "No need for a thank you. I just stated the truth.." Lina stated with a small smile.

Swimming? Hmm...It actually sounded refreshing. "Great idea, Ryul..." Lina said before standing up to stretch. "Sounds like exactly what I need..." She commented aloud, mainly to herself. "Well...Since I'm sure you have a location in mind..Lead the way." Lina said to Ryul with a brilliant smile. She was actually looking forward to it now. She couldn't wait to take a dip in the cool waters of some lake or stream.

"You don't try to, but you do anyway," he said, smiling. He caused his fireball to split into four. He sent them over to her to hover over her head. He started to spin them, like he had in the forest. Soon, it looked like she had a fire halo. He grinned and stood up.

Lina shrugged at his comment. She knew she could get pulled into her work. It pulled her in like a venus fly trap. It was so enthralling sometimes that she didn't leave the greenhouse for days. It wasn't always a good thing, but she felt so accomplished when she discovered something new, or made advances on her experiments. "I am working my butt off in there...That's my excuse.." She stated with a small smirk.

Her eyes focused back on the flames for a moment, watching as he split it up into four little orbs. It was neat how he could manipulate fire like that. However, when she spotted the orbs coming towards her, she froze. Even as they hovered above her head, she was still. The heat from them radiating onto her head. Lina didn't dare move.

She started sweating cause of the heat, and she felt light headed. "Ummm, Ryul...." She stated, closing her eyes to maintain her focus. "Could you please move the flames..." She asked as politely as she could. It made her anxious to have them hovering over her head, afraid that if she moved too quickly for him to respond, her whole head could go up in flames. Lina knew he wouldn't do that on purpose, ever, but she didn't like to test fire.

Ryul noticed that she looked nervous. He frowned. Did she not trust him enough to take care of her? Even if she moved, he'd have the fire out of the way and it wouldn't ever touch her. He moved the halo up higher where it joined back into one fireball. It hovered back to sit over his hand. He closed his fist around it and the fire went out. "I'm sorry," he said seriously. He opened his hand to look at it. "I shouldn't have done that," he said.
