That also depends on what legend of Phoenixes you're basing it off of. Some say that the Phoenix just spontaneously combusts, others say that the Phoenix is the bird of fire, and that it's feathers are an inferno, others say that there are elemental Phoenixes. Its all very subjective to which culture you're basing it, just like any mythical creature.
