By this point Nadja was coming to expect the unexpected, and Seth's actions no longer garnered a brow raise - just a speculative tilt of her head, like someone watching a magic trick. Something was going to happen, and the fun was in seeing how.

"Impressive," Nadja murmured as he closed the breaker box, because it was. She was wearing one of her faint, canny smiles, and the amber sodium lights cast a brassy sheen on her hair.

It wasn't until they were outside that the cold desert air brought back the rest of her thoughts. Drawing closer, the redhead reached out with a casual sideways glance and quietly slipped her good hand into Seth's.

The fact that she was impressed, did make him swell with pride, just a little bit. A smirk tugging at his lips as they made their way out into the crisp cool night of the desert. The moon was full and high, casting its wane light upon the glittering sands while the lights inside HQ shown from the windows.

The wilderness beyond was quiet and still, at least for now. A chill breeze suddenly whipping through, rustling clothing and hair.

As Nadja closed the gap between them, her presence brought a welcome warmth against the night air. Then as her hand snuck into his, the man's fingers wrapped around it in acceptance, turning his gaze to meet hers.

It was a subtle motion, just a slight narrowing of the eyes and a twitch at the corners of her mouth, but for a moment Nadja's expression hovered on the edge of affectionate as she looked at him.

Then it slipped into a smirk and she drew her hand out of her coat, flicking the release catch on the Pokeball it held. In a moment Moloch was there, waving his feathery tail with excitement, though he made a confused "Rrh?" at the person beside his person and how close they were. The prospect of a walk won out, though, and he pranced eagerly in place, waiting for the signal.

"All right," Nadja nodded at him, and the Arcanine took off across the desert in a spray of glittering sand. The redhead watched him until she heard a jubilant bark in the distance. "H'm," she half-laughed to herself, and with a little glance at Seth set off at a more relaxed pace away from the blazing lights of headquarters.

Even if it was only for a brief moment, Seth saw it, and it was a look he wouldn't soon forget. A surprise, but a pleasant one. He couldn't remember a time when a woman had looked at him that way. Granted there was still some cultivating to be done, but... there was promise.

Then the dog appeared, and Seth had to hold back his annoyance. Still, as the Pokemon took off, he was glad to be left alone with its owner once again.

Their strides carried them away from the HQ and further into the desert. A bleak landscape with really not much to look at. Yet, it was eerily beautiful, especially how the silver moonlight reflected off the dunes.

"So, why an Arcanine?" Seth asked in attempt to start up conversation. In truth, he thought that a classy woman like Nadja would prefer a sleek and elegant Ninetales. Not only for looks, but the Pokemon also had an interesting array of its own.

"..ah, well." Nadja closed her eyes briefly, brows lifting. "Moloch was a.. gift, a few years back." Her breath came in wispy vapor puffs as she gazed off across the dunes, her slim fingers warm against his. "I usually choose my own Pokemon, but I.. really couldn't have done better with him."

For a moment her expression grew distant, and then she willed it back into focus with a playful smirk. "What, you don't think he suits me?"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 11:07 pm

A gift. Well that explained it. Seth himself had chosen all of his Pokemon, none of his had been randomly gifted to him. Even Pele, who was bought for him, was still hand picked by him.

"Hmm," Seth hummed to himself thoughtful, then mirrored Nadja's smirk. "I would have expected something elegant, like a Ninetales. Not a playful, overgrown puppy. But you would know better than I." The pad of his thumb casually passing over her knuckles as he spoke.

"H'm." The redhead smiled privately at the offhand compliment. "Do you know, I don't think any of them fit that description? Except Zveya," she added, with a slight brow furrow and vocal downturn that signaled a possible joke, "but only if you add 'killing instrument' on the end. And Ophion snorts." Her fingers flexed, smoothing over and fitting between the bones in the back of his hand.

"Moloch is young," she continued, hunkering a little into her coat's high collar as the warmth of indoors began to wane, "and eventually he'll mature. But he's devoted and loyal.. and I value that in him." Her voice was slightly muted by fabric.

Thinking back on the Pokemon of Nadja's he had witnessed in battle, it was certainly true. Each were likely chosen for a different reason or another.

"True, although I wouldn't expect you to choose Pokemon based solely on appearance." That would just be foolish in his opinion. After all, Seth himself had a few Pokemon that most would consider unsuited for him.

Blue eyes side glanced at Nadja as she sank into her coat a bit more. The night was certainly chilly, such was the way of the desert. Seth moved closer to her as they walked, offering his own warmth should she need it.

"That is a good quality," he agreed.

"Well, body conformation, dental structure and so on," Nadja waved airily with her free hand, tucking it back into her pocket right after, "but I learned not to care about the aesthetics of it a while ago. Every themed team I've come across has a clear weakness."

The subtle gesture didn't go unnoticed, and gray eyes studied Seth over the hem of the coat collar. "So, why a Cyndaquil?"
PostPosted: Fri Dec 24, 2010 11:39 pm

A slightly confused look came over Seth's features. Dental structure? Really? Who picked a Pokemon based on their teeth? ... Well, perhaps if the teeth were especially important to the Pokemon, but still... it seemed a little odd.

"I agree, especially when it comes to teams that are limited to a certain type." He'd seen a few Rockets in HQ that specialized in certain types, and rarely teams such as those were effective. Pokemon battle strategy was something he'd studied for a long time, and he prided himself in it. Although Nadja proved that he still needed to work on it.

Her question drew a thoughtful hum. "I got Pele when I was kid, my first Pokemon." Seth started and then paused as he attempted to come up with the right words. "I was given the option to choose any Pokemon I wanted among the many the breeder had. I wasn't exactly an expert then. It just... felt right, I suppose. We seemed drawn to each other. Call it fate, if you believe in that."

That confused look got a squint and an arched brow challenging the oddity of the statement, and then Nadja focused on the night landscape. It was perfectly rational to her. She half-listened to Seth's statement about teams while she studied the veil of stars. The Milky Way was bright tonight, a glittering, nebulous river, and the pale moon cast long shadows behind them.

Her hair puffed slightly over her collar as she nestled into her coat; movement was keeping her legs warm, but the back of her hand was growing cold. The desert held no heat after dark.

When Seth answered she turned her gaze on him again, and as he talked, the sharpness gradually went out of her eyes. "You had good instincts," she murmured, more warmly than the brusque way she'd glossed over Pokemon selection. "She was easily the best in that litter."

That was certainly one good thing about being out in the middle of no where. No lights except HQ's to pollute the view of the night sky. The stars were bright out here, and Seth realized as they walked. It wasn't often that he took time to just slow down and enjoy such things. In fact almost never. But tonight was clear and he was in good company, it gave him the chance.

He listened quietly to Nadja's voice, but her last statement gave him pause. Brows furrowed and he turned his gaze back to her again, lips slightly parted. Now he was really baffled.

"How would you know that?" He asked, clearly stunned by what she had said. There was no way she could have known that... was there?

The redhead's gray eyes narrowed to wickedly mirthful slits and a not unkind laugh bubbled up in her throat. Seth nonplussed was a rare sight, and Nadja was clearly enjoying the privilege; she flashed white teeth in a devilish grin at him, studying his expression. It was doubtful she'd see it again for some time.

"Did you like my parents' center?"
PostPosted: Sat Dec 25, 2010 2:13 pm

"Your parents... are breeders in Goldenrod?" Seth asked, still in a bit of disbelief. She had never told him that, but then... he supposed there really hadn't been an opportunity. Still, it was odd, and made it clear that it really was a small world.

Although her laugh made it obvious that she was enjoying this moment at his expense. While it wasn't malicious, Seth did clear his throat a little and straighten up as he tried to... retain some bit of dignity. His hands going into his pockets as he almost forgot that she was holding onto hers. Didn't really matter as his pocket was more than big enough. His hands were getting a bit cold too, considering long thin fingers didn't really have the best circulation for this kind of weather. It was a little colder than he had anticipated.

"It was... a good center," Seth said, grasping for the few memories he had of the place, which were not many. That had been a long time ago.

"Mmhm," Nadja assented, the wicked playfulness ebbing while the liveliness remained. "They're still there. I visit.. when I can." By the sound of it that wasn't often.

But her hand shifted, still linked with his, and that drew her thoughts away from Johto to the man beside her and the hush of sand beneath their feet. It was Ambergris the way they were heading. That declining city had no nightlife to illuminate the horizon, and the base was behind them. This far out, if you didn't look back, it was possible to believe they were the only people in the world.

And the dog. There was a gout of flame some distance off.

Nadja flexed her fingers, resettling them in Seth's grip as she shifted closer to him, arms brushing and inner elbows touching. "I got attached to that one," she mused, feeling the blood start to flow back into her hand. "She stood out for more than her color; I always checked on her first when I got home."
