Zeren stood still as the green made her way towards them, but she locked eyes with a boy just next to him, his heart had hoped for a moment but she had chosen another, he took a deep breath and watched the brown, his eyes filling with tears as the little male was increasingly stressed. He gasped as he dug in the sand before going Between If he hadn't known Kazvar was watching he might have just fallen to his knees in sorrow, but he stood strong, there was still another dragon on the sands, and now .. another egg it seemed. He hoped that the egg wasn't a dud, that the little Brown had fought to give that little hopeful a chance.

No, no! That looked bad, very bad - it was always terrible when a dragonet went between, and Adi felt like her heart was in her throat while she watched the brown. Surely there was a boy somewhere, even in the stands...why was he digging and not looking? But there, there was another egg!

The girl's astonishment was short-lived, though, as the brown then blinked out of existance. "No!" she despaired softly, covering her mouth with her hands. "Oh, no..."

--

Allia's shock was much quieter. She simply stared, mute, at the egg the dragonet revealed before ending his own life. Oh, oh...she'd known to expect that a hatchling or two might go between, but a buried egg? How was that even possible? How could anyone not have known?

It had been a male. A typical male... It had been a Malvren male. The brilliant blue of joy that had spun in Moriath's eyes for the first Impression faded to grey. "He should have found His," she said softly to her rider, "foolish male... But what of that other egg."

Swallowing a lump in her throat, Kleos regarded the newly discovered egg through her dragon's keen eyes. It looked almost exactly like the desert egg, though somewhat smaller. Was that why the brown had vanished? Had it believed that this near twin would take its rider?... It could have Impressed first if that were the case. Was it possible that the brown had sacrificed itself to allow the other egg to take the rider that was meant for them both?... Perhaps she was reading far too much into this. Sometimes dragonets went between. It was tragic, but it happened.

"We must hope for the others, RiderMine," Moriath said with a mournful keen for the brown. "Hope for them, and rejoice for the green who has already Impressed."

"Of course." Swallowing again, Kleos turned her attention onto the new dragon-rider pair. At least these two had found one another.

The hairs on the back of S'raid's neck stood up as Galvanth let loose with an unearthly keen of grief, sorrowing over the lost hatchling. The Bronze's eyes whirled with a pale, saddened grey, and S'raid shook his head. That... was not a good sign. The Brown had gone between. Worse than namby pamby, the dragonet had not been able to find his match within the Candidates below. In a still, quiet moment, S'raid bowed his head, recognizing his dragon's grief. It was an emotion he could scarce relate to himself, but he recognized the depth of it, and gave it the respect it deserved.

He was so young, the Bronze said, sadness coloring his tone heavily. It is sad when they do not find their riders, S'raid. And it was. It was indeed sad. This represented a baby that Galvanth would never see paired to his rider, something tragic indeed. Though he knew dragons's griefs and attachments to situations were not long lasting, he would not, for the moment, be callous about it.

But look, Galvanth. The little Green has found her rider, see? Bait and switch. Or, mostly, switch. The Green would not go between for lack of an appropriate rider. There was something to be said for a good, solid Green. He knew their worth. They were useful tools, though unfortunately unable to contribute to the breeding stock. Hmmph. A shame, when that hatchling seemed so comparatively level headed.

Jarestmine, your Ilyrianth is hungry. We have much to do!

He started, his eyes wide at the feeling of something more, complete when he'd never known he was lacking, overwhelming and so perfect. His, he could feel her kindness as he rubbed his careful hand over her beautiful green head... So happy, marred suddenly as the brown vanished.
He ran his hand over her again in "L...let's g-go get you something to eat... " He said leading her carefully to feed.

Jarest had impressed, in fact.. he was the FIRST to impress. It took all her willpower to not jump for joy for him; he had a dragon! A little green dragon, the proud dragon. She wanted to run over and congratulate him, but greetings would have to happen later...

The brown just vanished. Where had...oh god it went between didnt the poor thing? Tila bit her lip as she thought about it. The brown's theirs was not here.. thats why it went between. "Oh no..." She too whispered.

She hadn't expected this to happen... she was in too much shock to notice the spare egg.

Ashmere would not hold back the tears that filled her eyes, no. The little brown should have found his, but the young harper knew that sometimes things of this nature happened, and often for a reason. Standing even taller the girl smiled despite the tears that freely flowed from her cold eyes, in his loss another was found, one that would sure have gone between without the aid of its brother.

He had given his own to make sure that another had a chance at life. To the young harper that was the most noble of causes a handsome brown could make.

The small grin that she held was ment for the one that had found Theirs, and she hoped that no more sacrifices would be need during this hatching.

Unknown to Zeren, even Kazvar wasn't immune to the grief of the betweened brown, and his face went cold and blank, wondering if somehow he'd been partially at fault, with his feelings toward impression, but he'd never know. He had no power to search the lost hatchling's mind before it had gone, or to bring it back now that it had gone.

Still, one of the greens had found hers, a young man he'd glimpsed here and there at distance but never spoken to. Not Zeren though, not yet...

There was still hope though.

The sudden clearing of the Sands seemed to stir the green up and she plunged headlong into the Candidates, seeking hers with an obvious, desperate need.

Eggs, too, were moving and cracking, and the Ocean Coasts eggs almost seemed to unfurl with the way the little dragon broke through. Vibrantly blue and beautifully patterned, the young male lifted his head and murmured a warble as if you say all was not lost. Perhaps he was the kind to pull through when needed?

Hopefully... but his ponderous steps towards the candidates, the girls this time it seemed, numbered few before he flopped on the sands and cocked his head as if listening while another of the eggs behind cracked, though it was difficult to tell the dragonet's colour as of yet.

Another Hatching had come, and once again all of the candidates were lined up out on the Sands as the dragonets began to hatch. Things started out fairly typical at first with the hatching of two greens, though it was always nice to see their individual personalities come out. That brown though... That had been terribly tragic. The moment Azuran had seen his yellow eyes his heart had plummeted for the youngling. Dragonets Betweening was always a horrible thing.

But what of the twin egg it had unearthed? How had no one noticed it before? What implications did this have for its brother? (Well, presumably brother.) He was drawn back into the present as the blue hatched next and started for the girls. Hopefully the rest of the dragonets would find Theirs.

Zeren held his breath, until the Green started to move again, where would she go? who would she chose? .. his eyes were drawn to the egg that had just beautifully hatched, a Blue, a gorgeous blue ... and ... was headed to the girls. He glanced again behind him, towards the stands, noting the slightly pained expression on Kazvar's face, .. he'd take the man a drink later, maybe take one himself when he failed yet again.

It was the Ocean Coast egg! And the dragonet inside was beautiful and bright. She remembered that one well, as everyone probably did. It had been so sad, and yet here he was, the first out and head high after his brown brother went between. He even started towards the girls, before he...stopped? What was he listening for?

And ohh, another egg hatching too! But what color was the dragon inside?

There! She could see them. Wykla gave a big excited grin and waved back to a couple discretely. Silently she wished them all luck.

Her attention was captured by the sound of shattering eggshells. The first baby. It was a green. Her eyes remained riveted to the pretty green as she walked up to the girls. It seemed she changed her mind at the last moment and headed to the boys!

Then a second egg hatched and produced another green. Wykla giggled as the little green fell over and laughed at herself. What a cute and amusing dragon! She hoped the green would find a happy rider too. Look at her encouraging her siblings. The dragon grin did take her back a moment. That dragon really had a personality. It seemed she was after a boy too.

Ooooh, one of the encouraged eggs opened and revealed a brown. Wykla saw the yellow eyes. Well when he found His perhaps he'd calm down, but he was backing away! Poor boy. He needed to go to them. For a moment she thought she'd heard the voice of the bronze who'd sired this clutch. Maybe it was just her imagination.

Oh! The first green had Impressed. That was certainly good, no fussing..... Her breath caught in her throat. The brown! She watched trying to understand as he dug in the sand. What? an 11th egg? Her mouth dropped open as the brown went between. A small escaped her eye. He couldn't find His. Wykla wished him a silent thanks for uncovering the extra egg before he left.

The moment passed and Wykla turned her attention again to the hatching. One green Impressed, one searching for her rider, a brown gone, and another egg hatching. Such a pretty blue! She'd expected him to head toward the boys. A small gasp escaped her as the blue headed in the girl's direction. Who would he pick? And he laid down in the sand instead. Wait what? She didn't think he was in distress, just merely.... waiting.

Mouth going dry, Nayetuel stared at the space where the little Brown dragonet had been, horrified. How- what- It wasn't fair! The poor little thing, had there really been no one he could find, no one who could give him what he needed? He mourned for the little life that was not to be, wishing there was something that could be done. If wishes were runners...

More, he worried for the little Green still unattached, though he was glad at least one of the pair had found their match. He hoped the other Green would not be too distressed by the loss of her sib, that she would find Hers quickly to take comfort in. Particularly as she seemed so distressed now, compared to the playful nature she’d shown before.

When the little Blue tumbled out onto the Sands, Nayetuel hoped he, too, would find His easily. Surely there would be someone for him, for the little Green, for all the rest? Surely they would not lose any more of the young ones?

It was then that S'raid noticed that, where the Brown's egg had lain, there was another egg buried deep within the sand. Ah! Eleven eggs, not ten? He blinked, mildly surprised by this, but pleased. A larger clutch size, even one that had seen such a tragic loss, was excellent. It was a good sign indeed. And, look... another egg, Galvanth. There had been Candidates milling about before, and they seemed a trifle more sedate now-- perhaps subdued? It was now possible to get a clear (or relatively, given the egg's location) view of the egg.

I see! Galvanth said, and immediately his focus was back upon his living hatchlings, peering between the various Candidates and dragonets, and looking over the eggs. There was still a touch of sadness to the Bronze, but he was quite proud of the little beasts that had hatched, and who had yet to find their riders.

This was good, he decided. Sad, because the Brown would never get to be one of them, and know the true completion that he knew, but good for the others. Perhaps now that hidden egg would be able to more easily find his or hers? When the little Blue warbled, Galvanth warbled in return, echoing the note in the baby's voice. He will not go between, Galvanth decided, and S'raid merely shook his head. How was the Bronze to know a thing like that, after all.
