"The smell of the forest...it reminds me slightly of my forests. The scent isn't quite the same, but it's similar. Maybe more north." She breathed deeply.
"So do you remember which way you came from?" She looked all around, "How long did you stay here?"

He took a deep breath as well. The heavy scent of ancient trees floated into his nostrils. It wasn't any scent it was the scent of his past, the secrets of his past locked into the heart of these trees and many more just like them. "Ah north." She seemed to feel the touch of the trees as well, though they weren't familar to her as they were to him.
"I remember this place, I must have stayed here for awhile as the scent has always lingered in the recesses of my mind, but I couldn't quite pin where they were from. They were from here." He had answered her second question first as he had to think on the first. "I think I came up from the south and traveled through parts of the woods to get here."

Acacia nodded, "We're on the right track then." She sniffed the trees again, thinking back on her past. But as she was reminscing, something caught her eye.
"What's that?" She tilted her head at a glint in the ground. Galloping over, she dug in the dirt for a moment. Pointing her nose down, she asked. "Was this yours?"

Aaron looked after Acacia inquisitively. Where was she going? He dug something up out of the ground and that's when he followed her over to the shallow hole. "No, it's not mine, but I know whose it is." Memories rushed into Aaron head he could could picture the necklace perfectly hanging around his father's neck. What was it doing here? Had his father come here to find him? Had they just missed each other? Where was he now? Aaron gingerly lifted the object as if afraid it would crumble at his touch. When it didn't fall apart he flipped t up and around his neck. He turned to offer the mare an explanation as she was likely confused. "This was my dad's."

Acacia smiled for a moment, "He was here once then. A long time ago...." she scraped at the dirt again. "What lies still beneath here? Do you think he's here still, or around here at least?"

Aaron fiddled with the trinket around his neck. It was much to early to get his hopes up but he could help but feel a small tinkle in his heart where he hadn't been touched in awhile. "I doubt that he's near, unless he found something on my mother, or me for that matter." Aaron chuckled, fond memories of his father overrided his annoyance at his occassionally fickle father who couldn't stay in one place long. Unsure of what to do he looked to Acacia for support, she couldn't possibly know more than he but maybee fresh eyes could see the situation more clearly.

She smiled, seeing the emotions crossing his face. She knew those emotions well, pleasure....pain, anger and a myraid of other thoughts. "Where would he go now?"
Acacia glanced around, "Would he go somewhere you've been before? Somewhere you maybe once said you would meet if something happened? Do you remember that?"
She shut her eyes, hearing her parents voices. If we're seperated, we'll meet at the gulch at dawn. Every year on this day. If we're okay. We'll be there.
But no one had ever come, and as the years had fled away, she knew that all accept her sister...were dead.

"No..it...we..." he stumbled over his words trying to think. "There was never really a plan, it was kind of a secluded area and my mom was never a planner and had just ignored my dad's logic." Too bad he thought, that would have been very helpful. "there was a creek river on one side and woods on the other side of our clearly I guess it seemed safe enough to them."
It must be hard for her too, he thought, not knowing about her sister. But Aaron was a tad jealous, at least had had a planned spot and information on what had happened even if it was bad news. He barely had a trickle of a lead.

Acacia sighed longingly, "Well...then maybe we should move on to the west, see if it triggers anymore memories?" Her mother had drilled the plan into her head over and over. Sure she knew they were coming, but she envied Aaron the hope he could still cling to. Which was insane really, because...well, she had the same with her sister.
Shaking herself out of her thoughts, she looked around for anymore subtle clues.

The staliion scraped his memories together. To the east was the forest and if one went north or south they would run into the forest eventually as well, "Well maybe we could go south-east instead as I recall going through the forest rather than around it." Aaron thought and then offered, "I can try and lead the way if you, want maybe I can follow my nose," he snort/laughed.

Acacia laughed, "Sound like a plan. You can smell things right?" She teased. She let him take the lead, "I'll follow you."

Aaron chuckled and looked around, snout in the air. He felt quite ridiculous doing, but he could have sworn that doing this helped, or maybe it was just his mind tricking him. Either way the scent of the trees seemed surely familiar and with a glance at the location of the sun he headed off southward. Closer to home. Perhaps.

Acacia couldn't help but laugh following him. "Is there anything more that you can remember? The more you remember, the more it'll help. Or at least, I think it would, right?"

"Um, well let's see..." Aaron scraped through he foal travels and younger adult life. Boy, did he do alot of traveling. He was not the most spatially inclined stallion and was afriad of getting his directions wrong, as was prone to happen. "we were in a clearing on a stream/river sort of thing. My mother and i went into the forest which was west of us," he paused not really wanting to go into details and decided to skim over them "I got pretty much lost alone in the forest and after a while ended up in plains. For all I know I may have lloped back on myself and went right past my once home," he shrugged "anyway, I came to some mountains which were quite fun to explore, but when they became dull I decided to search for my home again, so I turned around,at least what I thought was turned around, and started to search. I followed any trail, but I can't remember one ever getting me anywhere, all traces went cold. And while I was back in the plains I came across you." he smiled at the mare "and now we're here. anything specific that may trigger some memories," he chuckled. Not that he especially wanted to remember some things.

Acacia realized that this was going to be harder than she thought. Memories were fleeting. Over time they shifted and changed, became distorted. How many times had she realized that with her own memories? How many times had she had to think for hours before she coudl remember what her little siblings looked like? What her parents looked like? It was like looking through a haze trying to find something and only being able to identify it through distortion. It wasn't easy.
"Do you remember any plants? Sage, mint? Anything that might grow only a few places?" She said with patience.
