Morgan turned back to the Southern Governor, "Andrew, my main project lies in hunting for, gathering, cataloging, and protecting information that we can find. We have already implemented an education program, and I keep my Library open to those who would come for help. No originals ever leave, but we do our best to make copies of anything that a person may need."

"I believe we have a substantial base of technicians who could help you. We are needing more farmers, and livestock. Our lands in the southern areas of Missouri didn't suffer nearly as much as those in the North, but we don't have the farmers needed to work all the land we have at our disposal. It may be beneficial to start an exchange program between our men and women."

"We really need animals as well, especially breeders. Our livestock wasn't depleted so much by radiation as it was by desperation. Now the animals we have are protected as if they were the sacred cattle of the Hindus we used to be told about. We are trying to breed them back up, and in the meantime, we rely on the relatively large deer and rabbit populations, but even they will become stressed if we rely on them too much..."

Morgan trailed off as she realized that she was hording the conversation.

"Well Mrs. Fritts there is an unfortunate downside to kudzu hybrid trees, the lumber can be used fine and the trees are as tenacious as the vine. The problem is that you can't burn the wood. Some chemical reaction or the like, believe you me we tried, but kudzu would cannot burn. Oh yes, and any hybridized crop becomes sweeter than the original, haven't quite figured out why though." Andrew drew from his pipe once more, releasing a ring of sweet smelling smoke. "That is very hospitable of you Mrs. Fritts, I tend to apply the same methods used by Ms. Reynolds, it just tends to be safer that way."

Andrew stroked his beard in contemplation of the information, "I do believe a worker exchange system would be mutually beneficial, though I am sure that such a topic should be brought up when everyone is assembled, as to make it a fair opportunity for everyone to partake in. Our own livestock suffered little during the end, but we are still far short of a surplus, though I do have a large supply of pecans, oranges, and a few other crops. On the topic of your library however, do you perhaps have schematics for any satellite dishes?"

"Building fireproof organic homes sounds like a good investment, but I would rather import the wood than grow it myself," Suri commented with a small smile. "And I am certain that worker exchange programs will be discussed, for more than one reason. I don't think anyone would be so tactless to call it a human breeding program, but we need to be careful with our own genetics and immune systems."

"Satellite dishes?... Well sure, that's an easy one, but as of yet, we haven't had much luck in maintaining a connection with a satellite. Too much radioactive interference in the atmosphere I believe, but you would have to ask Julian that. He is our communications engineer back home. Of course you need more than just a dish, for that kind of stuff... Did you have something else in mind for the contraptions themselves?"

"As for the trees, I was more concerned about housing, and wildlife habitats. We ourselves avoid excess fires if at all possible. We mostly warm ourselves with solar energy, and extra layers of clothing. We cook with solar electric and greenhouse heat as well. It reduces the risk of unguarded flames getting away from us and destroying what we are rebuilding."

"Suri, your point is well taken, but according to past research, a successful repopulation of the Earth would only require 497 individuals... but I do suppose it is better to be safe than dead...So we should definitely broach the subject during council."

"You are assuming that the 497 individuals are at peak fertility," Suri reminded her. "After the extensive nuclear radiation, and with our depleted medical testing supplies, we have no idea exactly how fertile any of our residents are."

She fished in her pocket for the wind-up pocket watch she had reclaimed from an old museum and checked the time. Half an hour until the conference officially started in the main lodge.

Avery was slightly overwhelmed by the advances that all three of these individuals were making with their people. Herself and the Nomads never really concerned themselves with bettering human kind anymore. She believed that they had all lost hope, and she was probably right.

Finally, there seemed to be a point in the conversation where she could be of use.
"I believe citizens who aren't horribly affected by the radiation are indeed very firtile..." Avery spoke in a very quiet voice, hoping she wasn't interupting. As she spoke, she unconciousuly stroked her slightly swollen stomach.
"I've seen many mothers give birth to children. Most of them are deformed in some way or another, but i've seen a few come out perfect."

Andrew smiled, "That is good to hear, I am certain we will have much to discuss, later of course." Pausing to smoke a bit he listened quietly as the conversation went on without him. "There is a fairly easy way to tell how badly the mother and child are irradiated, and thus the chances the child will suffer deformities accordingly." Reaching into his coat Andrew pulled out a small home made Geiger counter and stepped over to Mrs. McKnight, shaking her hand, "Pleasure to meet you I am Andrew Lee, Governor Andrew Lee of the southeastern colonies, a pleasure to meet you. If you would so kindly hold still for a moment." Andrew removed a small metal stylus from the side of the device and ran it in front of Avery. Placing the stylus back in he pressed a button and waited a moment, "Congratulation Mrs. McKnight, your child is more than likely going to suffer no ill effects and your radiation levels are incredibly low." Andrew went back to his seat and returned the counter to its place.

"I--" Avery stuttered, "I don't know what to say!" Her bright green eyes flickered downward and her hands stroked her belly yet again.
"Thank you, so much."

Avery looked now at the entire group, "I don't think I've introduced myself. My name is Avery McKnight. I'm with the Nomads."
The only public speaking she was used to, was speaking to her comparatively small group of people that have decided to follow her all over the place. She was used to strangers, but not to people who ranked highly on the social scale. Her throat felt like it was going to combust, and her brain was racing to find something intelligent to say. She felt absolutely useless in this situation.

"Pleasure to meet you," Suri said with a kind smile. She had seen wanderers before, without hope or purpose. Her colony had taken in quite a few, so long as their radiation levels were low. "Ever thought of settling in one of the colonies, even for a little while? Life on the hoof is rough on swollen ankles. If you're ever headed out west, you could do worse than visiting us at Old Florence. Our birthing survival rate is excellent--we managed to entice a few of the leading Ob/Gyn's to reside with us, which increased our success immensely."

"Thank you so much," Avery smiled, "If I'm headed that way by then I will be sure to stop by." Her eyes wandered again, "But I am not sure settling is an option, I'm sorry."
Avery must have seemed so small, at least, that's what she thought she felt like. She felt almost like a homeless person in a rather large city, only slightly less pittied.
"My people, however, The Nomads," She paused again, drawing a tiny breath, "They're all damaged. Living in any one place just doesn't feel like home anymore. This moving community is the closest they've been able to having hope in a really long time. Some hope to find family members, friends, while others hope to have to never go back... I don't believe I can leave them."
Being able to have a home, though, never left Avery's mind. She hoped that she and her new lover could settle one day. But that day seemed very far away.

"I do believe I might be able to aid your people in their endeavor Mrs. McKnight. Radiation does not interfere with short wave radio frequencies. And with my various outposts across less... contaminated regions of the states I am certain I could offer some aid, in exchange for something of course. I will have to agree with Ms. Reynolds though, a woman in your condition should not be wandering on foot. Please allow me to ease your burden if only for a day." Andrew pulled out a slightly damaged and modified walkie-talkie and radioed in a few taps in Morse code. The person on the other end replied with a "Rodger" and horses could be heard in the distance. "I'll have Earl drive you wherever you need to go, he should be along shortly with the horse drawn buggy." Andrew smiled absently as he stuffed his pipe with more kudzu-tobacco.

"You might want to hold that thought, Andrew," Suri cautioned. "She may be here to take part in the council, which she has every right to do. The lodge is only a hundred yards off. A group of well outfitted traveling merchants could very well be the glue that holds us together economically, and would be a safe traveling method for engineers and doctors on loan, even messengers."

I was about to suggest something similar. A group of individuals who would be willing to shoulder the responsibility of couriers between colonies. Reliable communication will be the determining factor of whether modern human civilization gets a second chance or not. I think its value to the established colonies would definitely be worth sustaining a network of nomadic groups who are already experienced in the life of travels. I suppose our conference will need to consider such an arrangement and its worth though.

"I see that I have been misunderstood. I did not mean that the nomads should stop wandering, just that the option to settle down would exist readily, should they choose otherwise. I would be glad to provide them and other colonies with short wave radio transmitters and receivers though. As for economics though, my own colony simply uses the barter system and we have yet to have a problem."

"Sorry, honey, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I just meant that you didn't have to call the carriage for her just yet, because she probably won't be leaving any time soon," Suri corrected him with a smile and a gentle, reassuring pat on his knee. "She's an able bodied woman who obviously knows her own mind. But then I know that you are ever a gentleman with a heart of gold."
