This whole discussion on names made me think... many, perhaps most, of us humans share our name with at least one other living human. Wouldn't it be possible then for several angels to share a name? For instance, there are many angels named "Michael", but yet they are not all quite named "Michael", they often have slightly different spellings, such as the zodiac angel "Mikael". Some would argue that this is the same angel, which is very well could be. If you look up information on the angel Metatron, you will find that he has over 200 different names which have been cited! However, Metatron is a massive and powerful angel, supposedly he is the "biggest" angel around (his essence and being is huge that is). So, maybe all of these names are different sides of him? Maybe an angel that is huge and powerful can have many different names for its many different faces? In the Shemhamphorash, each angel has a merciful side and a severe side, based on the principals of the sephiroth, Binah and Chokmah. To invoke these different sides, there is only a slight change in the letters at the end of the angel's name: "el" or "ah". One for the merciful side, one for the severe side. So, Mikael could be the merciful side, whereas his other name Mikaah could be his severe side. So if this is true, then maybe a name being the name for many spirits could just be the name for one huge spirit's many faces. Sorry if I'm getting off topic guys. When I start conjuring up theories, I tend to get all wrapped up! redface

Names are complicated :
- Many people share the same name. e.g. Lots of people are named Bruce, Michael, Adam, Claire, Carrie, Valerie, etc.
- Many names can be used for each person. e.g. I have my given name (Joël), variations on my name (J., Joe, Joel, Dr. J), other nicknames ((let's not go there)), internet names (abarrach), terms of "endearment" (baby, b***h, dumbass), magickal names... you get the picture.
- Names change in different languages. James (en), Jacques (fr)
At least the third complication applies to angels, and you're suggesting that the second one applies as well. This, I suppose is manageable. However, if the first complication applies, then how do we know whether we're calling the angel we think we're calling? Or even that it's a holy angel rather than a fallen angel (or vice versa if that's your intent)?
I haven't really studied angel lore, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about. I'm not even sure why I'm posting this...

I'm not even sure why I'm posting this... Hmmm, well... it's hard for me to compare angels too closely to humans. For all we know, nothing may apply in the same ways for them. In our world, a nickname for us would get our attention if someone yelled it out, whereas a nickname called for an angel may have no effect on it. It's hard for me to explain what I'm trying to say. From what I've experienced, a name is not just a label for them, it is like the essence of what they ARE. There are a lot of things written about "vibrating" a spirit's name, mainly because pronouncing thoroughy and ardently each syllable, each letter, calls them closer. It seems to me as though they do not hear us speaking their names, they FEEL it. For this reason, I think of their names as more than just something to be heard, so it's hard for me to compare the nature or meanings of their names to ours. But again, it's all relying on the fact that they are definately not human. Beyond that, I can only say what I've found in my experiences!
