Merry withdrew a little further into the fabric of Lucas' sweater, but her dear human obviously wished her to be a little more social and she aimed to please. Her long tassel crept forth, touching Panther's hand briefly, as though it were a hot stove and she the child who had been warned against coming too close.

Lucas patted Merry's bell affectionately as he pondered Panther's words, "Yeah, that does sound pretty good, now that you mention it. Maybe hot chocolate or something... You think you could handle that, Mer?"

The little wind chime pokemon looked at her trainer incredulously. Was he seriously volunteering her as a maid...?

He watched as the chimco looked afraid to touch his hand and left it there comfortably. "I only do hot chocolate if there is cookies involved." he paused a moment and then realized Lucas was trying to convince the very small pokemon to go get the drinks. "I'll get up, if I sit too long my legs might petrify into wood and then I'd been real trouble then." his smile said that he was attempting to joke.

"Hah! But then no one would expect anything from you! They'd tell you do something and you'd just have to go 'hey, sorry, my legs are trees' and they wouldn't be able to do anything about it." Lucas stopped himself before he got drawn too far into the hypothetical situation. "Ah, I mean..." He cleared his throat awkwardly. Even Merry could tell he had thought about that one too much.

He snorted and a hand came up to cover the laughter, keeping it quiet but not all together succeeding in silencing it. It took a few minutes to recover his composure, but it felt good to laugh. This one was definitely worth keeping around. "I don't know, it would be a nice excuse. Don't mind me, just turn me to the sun once in a while and water me and I'll be good." he wave a hand at an imaginary person.

Lucas grinned, pleased with the results of his efforts. His talent for disarming people had earned him a place as one of the most popular elites - if not the most popular definitively - when he still held the rank.

"Well, you'd best get yourself your coffee. The fact that we're having this conversation in the first place is testament that neither of us are in our right minds." The amiable smile remained, silently signaling that Lucas would wait patiently. Panther was good company, he had decided.

"Sanity is overrated anyway." He stood up. "You want hot chocolate? I'll grab yours too, so your legs can petrify." he stretched getting the circulations going again in his legs, it was too soon for him to sit like that he decided. The chairs weren't exactly made for long term sittings and he had been on his feet all day.

"Ain't that the truth," he affirmed with a nod. "And sure, that'd be excellent. Thanks."

When Panther departed for the drinks, Lucas would sink forward slightly with a quiet sigh and reflect on his circumstances. As a man who had ceded to the accusation of having killed his best friend, what right had he to laugh so earnestly...?

"Chime..." The sound of bells would attract Lucas' attention his Chimecho who had noticed the sudden deflation of his mood.

"No worries, Mer." He would pat the pokemon's head absently and would have returned to his normal grinning self by the time Panther returned.

Panther couldn't get the small smile off his face, it had been a while since he had felt decent, maybe he was finally getting over his little... emotional spell would be a good way to put it. He payed the cafe worker ordering two hot chocolates, the largest size. If he was lucky, he's help Lucas polish off the second one. His sweet tooth was getting the better of him again, but today was a day for comfort food. He tosses a casual glance back at Lucas and noticed something off about him. He couldn't decide what, just saw a serious look that darkened the older man's face.

He snagged the drinks as they finished, hovering over the counter impatiently and then wandered back, setting one in front of Lucas, with a respectful distance from the chimeco, before sitting down.

"Thank you kindly, sir," he said, accepting the warm cup. He sipped at the beverage but jerked away as the liquid singed his tongue, grabbing one of the packets of creamer left at the table by a previous diner and emptying into his cocoa to cool it and enrich its flavor.

A random thought crossed his mind, "Out of curiosity, what department do you work in?" The man had mentioned a boat mission and also possessed at least some knowledge of guns, but that alone wasn't enough for Lucas to make any degree of assumption. He pretended not to notice as Merry crept forward and tipped the hot chocolate ever so slightly to steal a taste.

He slumped in his seat and glared down at his cup, pulling his hand off the cup and into a tight fist. The gloves squeaked a little in protest. "....I don't want to talk about it." he growled out, teeth suddenly on edge. He didn't even want to think about such things as he was pretty much infinitely demoted to janitorial duity forever. His thoughts raced and his brows creased and he felt his pulse rise. he tried to take a breath to calm himself, and take his mind off the source of his current aggravation.

Lucas took a long, casual draw of his beverage, absorbing the flavor. A few moments passed in silence as he waited for whatever he had stirred in Panther to settle.

"Mind if I ask about your team?" he prompted, recalling how interested Panther had seemed when they discussed their pokemon previously. His voice was subdued without being condescending - it was a very specific tone he had spent years practicing and perfecting. "I remember you mentioned a Charmander and the name Shade before..."

"The Charmander's name is Nika. I don't plan on taking her out on missions anytime soon, mostly because she still won't let me put her into the pokeball." he latched on the conversation topic, relived for the refocus and silently thankful. "I have Shade the Gengar, my second ghost, Shadow, who is a haunter, Subastion, the Eevee. I'm saving for a fire stone for him, Damsel the Totodile and Swiftwing, my Pidgeot. Well he tolerates me at best, but we've come to an understanding." he rattled off his pokemon, annoyed at some but his voice held an undertone of affection for each. "A full team but, I'm still working on the training." nevermind that he hadn't been in the right mind for good training lately.

"That's an impressive array," Lucas commented, eyebrows raised. "Fire, water, flying, and ghost, huh... Sounds like you've got a well-rounded team. Safe to assume that your preference is for ghosts?" He was aware that six was the norm for the number of pokemon one carried on oneself at any given time, but it amazed him no less when he and Merry were met with trainers with so many companions.

"Yeah, I like ghosts. Or well, they like me anyway. But it's silly to stay with only one type all the time. I want a spirit tome eventually." a sly smile crossed his face. "Ghost/dark pokemon don't have many weaknesses. For now, Shade is my best pokemon for battling."

"Very true." He'd met many a boastful trainer who 'specialized' in a certain type only to fail swimmingly against an opponent with a single pokemon of the opposing type. "Ghost are good candidates for battling. Can learn a variety of moves and have a variety of immunities. A solid choice, for sure, but it's definitely good that you're balancing yourself out."
