Martial Event- Armed Combat Tournament

Rain Yupa
@ The Martial Duels:

The first duel is between a Crab and a Mantis; the former is of a heavily robed shugenja from the Crab Clan, Kuni Kaori. Her face is painted all white, a bit less elaborate than what is traditional for the Kuni, almost as if it was done in haste. She wears thick robes which mask her physique, making her appear larger than most women traditionally of her height. Her opponent, Yoritomo Susumu, is a tall, lithe Mantis man, heavily tattooed and equally heavily scarred. He carries a pair of kama, a traditional armament for someone of his upbringing.

While the Mantis is eager to get underway, Kaori approaches Seppun Benjiro, having a brief discussion with him. With a nod of approval, Kaori would return to her starting postition, 20' away from the other duelist. Though armed with a no-dachi sheathed on her back, she would instead pull out a scroll, something ill-received by the Mantis. As he begins to verbalize his displeasure, the Crab finishes her spell, the Earth Kami around her following her motions as she stomps her foot into the ground, shattering the stone that lay within. Reaching down from the fragments, she would pull a large, crude tetsubo of pure stone from the ground, hefting it over her shoulder with relative ease. A serious look of determination on her face, and she was ready to begin.

Round 1

Kuni Kaori wins initiative, and with an unexpected roar (from everyone, including the Yoritomo), she charges him! She takes a Full Attack posture, sinking both Free Raises into damage, looking to put down her opponent in one swing! Dealing 29 damage, she swings it hard and catches him in the torso, knocking the wind out of him, leaving him Injured.

Surprised he was still standing, he would spit out a bit of blood from his mouth, muttering something before using 2 of his raises to counteract the wound penalty, 1 to up the damage. He proceeds with a quick flourish of slashes that would catch the Kuni woman off guard, dealing 26 damage to her and leaving her Down. Collapsing onto one knee, she began panting, finding herself unable to continue. Spitting at her feet, the Mantis would walk away victorious.

Winner: Yoritomo Susumu

--------------------

The second duel is between two opponents that were not as extremely different as the last pair. First up is a woman dressed in Dragon Clan colors, wearing a sleeveless top with her hair tied back in a ponytail. Known as Kitsuki Wazuka, she carries a hooked spear known as a sasumata, with a steely look of determination in her eyes. Her opponent this round would be a woman from the Unicorn clan, with very short, cropped auburn hair. This woman came armed with a unique weapon of her own, a large hammer called the dai tsuchi... which she was wielding one-handed effortlessly! She has an aura about her of almost shame, as its written all over her face that she leads a less-than-noble lifestyle (read: Glory of 0.0). Though she was donned in heavy unicorn armor, the unarmored Kitsuki did not seem deterred whatsoever.

No trickery this time, they would settle this with a pair of non-katanas, waiting for Seppun Benjiro to give them the go-ahead.

Round 1

Kitsuki Wazuka wins initiative by a point, letting out a kiai shout as she lunged forward, attempting to grapple Sayoko with her weapon, pinning her to the ground! Calling two raises, she snags the Unicorn with her odd weapon, attempting to pin the armored woman to the ground! However, much to her chagrin, Horiuchi Sayoko spends a void to terminate the grapple, brushing aside the weapon with an impressive feat of strength; then she steps forward, in a Full Attack posture, and swings her dai tsuchi at the courtier, hard. Calling 2 raises, she gains a total of 5 to use towards extra damage.

35 damage later (that's NOT keeping the 16 she rolled), the Kitsuki was sent flying into the crowd of observing samurai, unconscious and blood oozing out of her ears, nose, and mouth. Several ribs were obviously broken, and it was by the fortune's grace that she was still alive. By the time everyone's head swiveled back towards Horiuchi Sayoko, she was already walking back to her tent.

Winner: Horiuchi Sayoko

--------------------

For this round, Kaiu Kagae would find himself fighting an opponent unlike any of those who have competed so far. A man in red robes with short, spiky black hair. His dark eyes would size up the Crab, everything from his nose down covered in tight cloth. Reaching to his side, he would unsheath his katana, obviously not one for banter.

Kaiu Kagae, roll initiative!

Mongooseh
'Hmph' Kagae thought, 'Suits me fine. Lets get this over with.'

Kagae quickly strapped on his helmet and slowly drew his blade and put himself into stance.

(initiative 3k2
Initiative 9)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

(Initiative 24)

The mysterious Naizen would adjust his stance, ready to lay into the Kaiu. Unlike the first two matches, however, he does not rush in blindly; instead, he inches closer, lashing out with his tempered blade when the moment is right! The tip of the katana scratches across Kagae's armor, not even leaving a scratch! (16 to hit.)

Kagae, declare your stance (Attack, Full Attack, Full Defense), and go!

Mongooseh
Kagae placed himself in a normal attacking stance after being attacked by Naizen. He shouted a war cry and slashed downwards on Naizen in a hope of hitting him.

(6k2 = 17 to hit)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Kagae's blade swings and cleaves through the cloth of Shosuro Naizen's robe, expecting it to cut through his flesh; instead, it grazed off of hidden armor instead!

Naizen would continue to attempt to whittle down the Crab, making another strike that just barely catches Kagae in an opening in his armor! Kagae is cut for 16 damage, leaving him Hurt (+10 to the TN of his rolls!)

Mongooseh
Kagae grimaces as he gets caught on his torso by Naizen deciding to be a bit more careful he takes a full defensive stance.

(tnbh is now 31 for this round)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

With the Crab holed up in his shell, Naizen attempts to seal the deal with a Full Attack; if he can hit with it, then the match would most definitely be his!

Both Free Raises would be used to lower Kagae's TN by 10, and he misses with a rather lackluster 12, falling right into the Crab's trap! Kagae, you have 3 Full Raises to use against the Soshuro!

Mongooseh
"HAH!" Shouted Kagae his plan coming together nicely excelling from that his ploy worked he ignores his wounds and strike the faltering scorpion in a full attack stance.

"This ends now!"

(6k2 to hit +15 from the 3 raises 6k3 damage 1k1 from the 2 raises
and a void point spent to ignore wounds.)

(8+ 18 +15= 41 to hit and 14 + 9 +6= 29 damage)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

The Scorpion would apparently lose the game of patience; trying to goad Kagae into going all in first, he found himself coaxed into the very same trap; this left him vulnerable, and after a quick downward slash of the blade, the Shosuro would find himself on one knee. Naizen would glare upwards into Kagae's eyes, his own becoming heavier as he thumped onto the ground.

Winner: Kaiu Kagae

Shosuro Naizen would be carried off to be treated for his wounds, while Kaiu Kagae would vacate willingly. This would lead to the next two competitors. The first would be a man in bright orange clothes, and light armored sporting the mon of the Phoenix Clan. His auburn hair was cut extremely short, and had a somewhat rugged appearance, his eyes betrayed a more compassionate spirit that lay within. Over one shoulder he carried a nagamaki, which appeared to be a katana with a hyper-extended haft, making it appear to be more of a polearm or spear than a proper sword.

Calling out to his opponent, Ujina Denbe, he would say to him, "Come, Hare. Will you do me the pleasure of facing me in honorable combat? I'd be interested to see where my skill with a blade measures up to yours."

Ujina Denbe, you're up! Roll me some initiative!

Mongooseh
Kagae retreats from the battlefield and goes to see a medic about the wound he suffered. He sat watching the duels topless while being patched up by a medic.

Psychofish
"I would be honored to oblige," a voice revealed the Hare as he appeared from the throng of spectators.

And appeared was entirely too fitting a word. The first, and most easily noticed trait of Denbe was his slight stature- and beside a crowd populated largely by bigger and burlier bushi and enthusiasts, he seemed shorter and more slight than usual. He was on the young side with plain mousey colored hair that did little impressive. This at least was carefully tied up against the back of his head, and he was cleanly shaven. Otherwise he appeared unremarkable, but for a light step and pleasant, undaunted smile.

His katana at least seemed no shorter than usual as he drew it and held the blade low- stopped far across the field from his opponent, where neither man could easily take the other unawares with a surprise attack. Not that either of them seemed inclined to.

Unlike the previous competition, and like the man across from him, Denbe even wore his light armor and mark of his clan openly, with bright red clothing showing underneath.

"My name is Ujina Denbe. Might I ask yours, before we begin?"

[3k2 Initiative: 10]

Plainsfox
@ The Martial Competition

"Greetings, Lord Kaiu." Kojiro bowed respectfully to Kagae. "And congratulations on your match. Do you know how well Lady Kuni is doing? She seemed to be hit awfully hard. With the pounding the contestants are taking, I wonder how many of us will be able to stand come morning. "

Mongooseh
Having to remind himself of his manners he allowed the medic to finish patching him up before standing and bowing back before replying.

"Ummm... I would not know of how Lady Kuni is doing. I am sure that my face would not be the most welcome one to be seen when she comes to... Though I think the point of this competition is that the winners are the ones able to stand at the end... Though I am unsure of this sort of competition as I am much better at crafting things... May I ask who you are despite the paradox of asking a masked man who he is?"

Plainsfox
"It doesn't seem like a paradox to me. If one truly wished to be unknown than one would not wear their family's mon or their clan's mon. Our masks hide nothing. I am Bayushi Kojiro of Trail's Respite village."

The Scorpion shrugged. "I have a strong feeling that fighting might not be all there is to this tournament, otherwise they would not hold events for courtiers or hold events that might be construed as a middle ground."

Mongooseh
"Your masks do nothing but provide a false face... Forgive me it is not my place to talk like that Bayushi Kojiro. I would hope that it isn't all just fighting otherwise I will be a spectator more than a contestant drinking myself into a state where this tournament will just be a blur to me." Replied Kagae as he dressed himself to don his armour once more so that he didn't have to wear it but still carrying his helmet underneath his arm before continuing, "shall we go watch the fights? I'd rather not be seen dawdling with the wounded when I myself wasn't too injured. So... Do you have any other interests than fighting because it bores me to be honest."

Plainsfox
"We take the lessons that Shinsei taught our founder to heart. Just as few can understand the ways of enlightenment, we expect few to understand the way of our enlightenment."

Kojiro stretched as he turned his attention to the match between the Hare and the Phoenix. "As for interests, I enjoy hunting immensely. I long to try Falconry, but hunting with my yumi has been a more practical use of my time. My wife has tried to get me to partake in more civilized pursuits, but I am no courtier! What about you, Lord Kaiu?"

Mongooseh
"As any Kaiu I find myself extremely interested in the crafts and engineering. I do find history interesting though as it does provide a timeline of the development of weapons and armour also why these developments were made. Though saying all this I do hole myself up in my workshop Lord Bayushi. I'm only here because my parents deemed it my time to gain some status and to be honest once again... I just feel uncomfortable in crowds or at parties." Replied Kagae while he watched the fight half heartedly as he pondered something.

"I wonder if they serve tea somewhere nearby..."

Plainsfox
Kojiro sighed. "Our names belong to their ancestors. It is often their wish that we prove ourselves worthy of them. If you will excuse me, I shall see about that tea. I feel you have more to learn from this match than I.

Mongooseh
"I'll agree to that." Commented Kagae as he watched the scorpion walk off to get some tea.

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

The Phoenix warrior would nod his head to Denbe. "They call me Isawa Sosuke. Despite my heritage though, I'm really a terrible shugenja. I made up for it with my skill in martial combat. I am a fan of demonstrations, so allow me the honor of giving you one." Smirking confidently, he would continue to rest his nagamaki over his shoulder as he took up an attack stance, slowly raising his off hand to grab the extended haft as he inched closer.

{Initiative of 19}

Maintaining his attack posture, he would step forth with one very large stride - only one - before arching his nagamaki up and back down in one massive, powerful swing! However, the nimble Hare Samurai is wise to the predictable swing, and is able to avoid it rather effortlessly! {Attack of 12, miss}

Denbe, you have initiative!

Psychofish
It was an honorable duel, and so Denbe returned in kind- just as soon as he'd ducked away from the broad stroke. Powerful- a display of how much damage he could do as a Bushi, even if it was not his families customary role. Impressive- if a bit sloppy.

"A bold stroke," he complimented as he swung his blade in return.

Favoring the opposite his opponent, Denbe took to accuracy- and precisely carved a gash into his foe. First blood was not most important, but it was a nice start.

[6k4 Attack: 37]

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

Denbe would deliver a cut that cleaved cleanly though the Isawa's armor, with some red dripping down from his chest and leaving him Grazed. "Very good, but don't count me out quite yet simply because I'm of the Phoenix. Now watch carefully, as I show you true mastery over one's Void!"

Letting out a kiai shout, he would focus his Void into his accuracy, his muscles tightening as he prepared for his attack! The air around the Phoenix would become superheated as he tensed, and swung horizontally with surprising speed! {Attack roll of 26 vs TN 24}

He would catch the Hare bushi off guard, delivering a massive wound to his opponent! {Denbe receives 20 damage and is Injured!}

Psychofish
The small bushi stumbled under the force of the blow, clutching the wound and trying to circle away from any immediate follow up. That was a little much for even him to smile under. He winced in pain instead as he readied his sword again.

"Impressive."

No hedging around that. It'd hurt. But Denbe took it as a challenge- and he rose to it. Summoning the focus within his own void, he shut out the pain of the wounds and gripped his katana. With a battlecry of his own, Denbe took a second swing at Isawa.

[Denbe uses 1 Void Point!]
[6k4 Attack:14]

((My "in case of exploding dice" rolls were the high ones. =_____=))

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

Denbe would be bleeding pretty heavily from his wound, and was on the losing side of this fight. Sosuke would refocus his void to aid his reflexes and keep him safe, easily parrying the desperate katana swing with his own weapon.

"You're an excellent opponent to hone my skills against, Ujina Denbe. When I win, you'll come to terms that defeat was inevitable, like all my opponents." He would begin a flurry of quick thrusts with his nagamaki, forcing an exhausting Denbe to keep sidestepping to avoid getting himself skewered. {Attack roll of 16 vs TN 24, miss}

Denbe, you have initiative!

Psychofish
"Perhaps. But I don't intend to be remembered as your easiest foe today."

Perhaps he was imagining the level of his plight, but Denbe understood that he was not at the advantage here. His wound was deeper than his opponent's. He had limited reserves left for the tournament, but if he did not win this round, holding them back meant nothing. It was an honorable fight; not one he felt shame in losing. But as Denbe said.

He didn't mean to simply hand it over while he still perceived a chance for victory.

Focusing his mind to hold out from the pain of his wounds a few moment's longer, Denbe abandoned his light footing and guard- and with a kiai shout of his own, threw his full body into a wild strike.

If he could land this one, maybe he'd turn it around.

[Full attack stance!]
[Use raises to increase damage by +1k1]
[Denbe uses a Void Point!
[6k4 Attack: 32]

Plainsfox
Kojiro will come back to the fight with a frown. I regret to inform you that there is no tea to be had now. Did I miss anything?

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Denbe would barrel into his Phoenix opponent suddenly and without warning, delivering another slash that cut another c***k into Isawa Sosuke's armor, and into Sosuke himself; stepping back a step, he would clutch the wound at his side, now as Injured as Denbe.

Shifting his stance to an aggressive one, his Void would be channeled to be used offensively, bolstering his accuracy. "It was a good attempt, my friend. If I am to have any attempt at winning, though, I must give it my all as well. I thank you for this opportunity to prove myself."

Dropping his nagamaki, he would draw his katana to replace it, bowing to Ujina Denbe. He then spends a Void Point to overcome his wound penalties, before slashing with conviction to take down the Hare Clan samurai before the match can be delayed any further (using all 3 free raises to increase his attack roll). {39 to hit, chooses to keep 15 damage to knock Denbe into the Out condition}.

Flicking the blood off his blade, he would sheath it, before kneeling down to assist Ujina Denbe up and help carry him to where he could get medical attention. A servant of the Magistrates would grab the Phoenix's dropped larger weapon and follow shortly behind.

Winner: Isawa Sosuke

With things underway for the next battle, the next two warriors would be called forth: The Crane duelist, Kakita Zanzen, and his opponent, the Dragon swordsman, Mirumoto Sozen. The latter would take up his position, katana and wakizashi drawn and ready to rock. Several tattoos were displayed around his neck and arms, and there was undoubtably more beneath his armor. He stared down Zanzen with a cold determination in his eyes.

"It is time for us to pit our swordfighting styles against one another, Crane. Let's see if mastery over one blade can overcome mastery over two."

Kakita Zanzen, roll me some initiatives!

--------------------

As Kaiu Kagae would rest after his battle, he would be approached by someone he... recognized? Kuni Kaori would step close to him and bow in silence before him.

"... The Magistrates asked me to lend my healing services to the injured winners of the duels. May I tend to your wounds, Kagae-san?" the shugenja would ask, her appearance a stark difference to that of this morning when she had left the tent in a hurry. She appeared much less vulnerable and much more capable of handling herself... despite the numerous bandages that had been applied to her body.

Raganui Minamoto
"Mastery? I dare say I am not at that level yet." He smiles, eyes closed. Shifting to take a ready position, he opened both eyes, Brown and Blue. "But I will work my way to it." His blade stayed sheathed, his right hand hovering over the hilt.

(Init: 19)

Plainsfox
"Lady Kuni! It is good to see you up and about! If you are so willing, I would like to talk with you later.

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

Kaori would look over upon Kojiro as she was preparing her scroll of Path to Inner Peace, observing he had no injuries. "You have not even competed yet. You do not need my attentions." A brief pause later, and she would add, "If your aims are amorous, then I have a thing to teach you about Kuni women. Especially injured ones."

--------------------

"Modesty and Confidence are traits of equal value. Then let us fight for each, and see which prevails."

{Initiative 21}

The bald young Miromoto would cross his blades before him, ready to last out if the need be... but the moment had not arrived yet. For now, he would wait, and gauge his opponent. {Full Defense, Defense roll of 29}

Kakita Zanzen, you have initiative!

Raganui Minamoto
Zanzen opts to slowly close for a bit, studying the man for a moment before suddenly closing, unleashing a quick flash of steel.

Attack: 8k5 = 50

Plainsfox
Forgive me, Lady Kuni. I do not wish for your attentions. I only desire an opportunity to determine if I could find a way to obtain information from your family that may help with a matter of family honor. If you would like to discuss the matter with me later, I would be honored. Although the matter is disgraceful and shaming, it is no secret. I would prefer that few people knew of it. If you wish, I would not object to a witness to insure that your honor is maintained."

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

Mirumoto Sozen is surprised and caught off guard at the lightning-fast strike that smashed his defenses to bits, a look of complete shock on his face as Zanzen's kakita blade cuts across his chest!

However, he spends a void point to negate 10 of those wounds, reducing his damage to 17, leaving him Injured instead of Down.

"I'm sorry... I can't give up without a fight, noble Kakita. I have to do what I can to get my blades on Horiuchi Sayoko. It was not my original goal in this duel... but I can't let that monster go after almost killing Wazuka. She would have if it was permitted; you could see it in her eyes. I will dishonor her if I give up now. Defend yourself, Kakita Zanzen!"

Mirumoto Sozen shifts from Full Defense to Full Attack, spending another Void point to gain a bonus to his attack! With a powerful flourish of sword slashes, he likewise blows through Zanzen's defenses like tissue paper! {56 on the attack roll between raises and wound penalties}.

Sozen manages to strike a wound into Zanzen's shoulder, wounding him for 16 damage, leaving him Hurt (+10 penalty to rolls)! Zanzen, you have initiative and 3 free raises to play with!

Raganui Minamoto
"Honorable, but I cannot loose either. I made a promise." He speaks calmly, then flashes out another strike of his sword.

1 Free raise on attack to lower TN.

Attack: 8k5 = 34

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

At this point, Sozen would have little to lose by dropping his last Void, reducing the wounds to leave him Down, rather than Out. "Huff... huff... you win, Kakita. I submit..." he said, wobbling on his knees with the massive blood loss from the dual cuts across his chest. He would collapse onto one knee, and servants would rush to his side.

"Get away! I can... I can walk on my own..." he would yell to them, struggling to get to his feet. Looking over at Zanzen, he would nod, though he would not smile. "They said... there will be an iaijutsu tournament on the last day. We'll have a rematch then," Sozen would promise him, before hobbling off to get his wounds treated.

Winner: Kakita Sozen

Though the first round was officially over, Benjiro would call forth two of the competitors with byes on the first round: Hida Hogai, and Bayushi Kojiro. They would start the round to allow proper healing to be applied to the original contenders. The winner of this would face Matsu Seichiro at the end of the next round.

Calling them up, the larger of the two would step forth. Hida Hogai was a great man, well over 6' tall with a stocky build. Clad in full heavy armor, decorated with mons to the Crab Clan, he would raise his masakari, or one-handed axe, high in an early sign of victory. The lower half of his face was covered in a bushy beard, an unruly mess of tangles. More notably than that, however, was the absence of his left hand, severed at the wrist and long since healed over.

"Bayushi!" he called out... excitedly. "Let's show these samurai how real men fight and beat the s**t out of each other! What say you, little Scorpion?" He laughed heartedly at his suggestion... but he was sincere enough in it.

Bayushi Kojiro, I need initiative!

Plainsfox
My pincers are a match for yours, Hida! Kojiro bowed deeply as he held his Kusarigama in his hands.

OOC Initiative is 6k3, last 3 dice are explodydice. Init is 48

Raganui Minamoto
"I will look forward to it." He walked after the man, closing his brown eye. "After we get patched up, perhaps you would enjoy tea some time? Perhaps you can enlighten me more on your want for revenge. I understand if you wish to keep to yourself of course."

Plainsfox
Kojiro will shift to attack posture and raise once (in addition to two free raises) to attempt to knock Hogai off of his feet.

5k3. Total: 15

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

As soon as the match began, Bayushi Kenjiro would lay into the Crab, his chain weapon... bouncing harmlessly off of the warrior's heavy armor.

"Haha... what? Wait, really?" the jovial Hida would ask, tilting his head. "Tell you what. One more try, Bayushi! Put all your heart into it!" Grinning broadly, he would put up his dukes... er, duke?... as he readied himself for another chain weapon attack. {Full Defense, defense roll result of 21}

Kojiro, he's calling you out!

Plainsfox
Kojiro growled and tried to summon his inner strength to let him focus enough to crack the one handed Hida's shell.

OOC Spending Void point. 6k4 Attack; Total number: 36

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Deciding that fancy doesn't suit Kojiro versus a Crab, he went for a more direct approach, whacking the warrior across the face with his weapon! Though the blow was light, it left Hogai Nicked!

"Come on, use your katana! Enough of these games!" Hogai goaded, gauntleted fingers stretching and clenching around the haft of his battle axe. "Maybe you need some motivation, yeah?" Marching right up to the Scorpion, Hogai would attempt to help the smaller man see his point, Crab Style! {46 on his attack roll}

All the evasiveness in the world wouldn't protect Kojiro from Hogai's cleaving axe! {Kojiro takes 16 damage, and is Hurt!}

Plainsfox
Kojiro shouted loudly as he dropped his Kusarigama. He was ashamed that the duel had progressed this way and he prayed to his ancestors to guide his blade....not that they would listen, but it was all he had!

OOC Dropping Kusarigama and drawing Katana. Full attack w/ Katana. Spending Void point to negate wound modifiers for this round. Last three dice are splody dice.

Attack # is 28

One raise used to reduce Hogai's TN to be hit. Other raise reserved for damage

Mongooseh
"I would be honoured Lady Kuni even though it does hurt me to see that you have not been magically healed despite that you have taken more wounds than me..." replied Kagae softly before removing his armour once again and half of his yukata off revealing the bandaged wound.

Deciding it would be rude to make idle decided to carry on.

"Um... Excuse me if I seem rude but I did not expect someone like yourself to be participating in duels."

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

With a total combined damage of 23 to Hogai, the large Hida would definitely be Hurt. "Ha ha ha! Now THIS is a challenge! Fight like this more often, and you might want to consider life on the Wall!" Hogai seemed to be loving this, and used his three free raises for something unexpected.

"Take me to the edge, Bayushi, and I'll grant you the same reward!" He would make an aggressive move to attack the Scorpion, attempting to provoke the warrior to attacking again. But he found out too late that it was but a Feint.

{3 free raises into Feint, Attack roll of 41 vs TN 35; no damage, but Hida Hogai gets 6 free raises on his next attack}

Bayushi Kojiro, go!

Plainsfox
Either way Kojiro looked at it, the Crab was going to lay him flat at the next opportunity he gave. Still, if he had no chance against a crippled Crab warrior, what chance would he have against Masamune? With another shout, Kojiro lunged forward at Kogai, hoping to win this while he had the chance.

OOC Full attack. Both raises used to offset Kojiro's wound penalty. 6k3 Last 3 are explodie dice

To hit: 29

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

At 38 now, Hogai almost went down... but not before spending one of his Void to allow himself the chance to strike first!

With a roar, he would go Full Attack, gaining a total of 11 free raises to use! 8 of them would be used to lower Kojiro's TN to be hit (from 65 to 25), and the other 3 would be used for a Called Shot to the Head.

Then, he would lean back, and attempt to deliver a crushing headbutt to Kojiro's head! {Jiujutsu roll of 19} There would be a deafening ring that echoed out from the impact, and Kojiro would definitely be left a bit dizzy from the impact... but it wasn't enough to get through the Scorpion's protective headgear.

Hida Hogai would fall to one knee, panting... and laughing. "Haha... damn... that would have been... an awesome victory... and an awesome defeat... They always told me that my sights were set too high. I'm unable to continue. You've been spared the wrath of the Hida, little Scorpion. Good work."

Winner: Bayushi Kojiro

--------------------

Elsewhere, not far from watching the battle, Kuni Kaori would explain to Kaiu Kagae. "I am a Kuni. My service is to Rokugan first. The magistrates asked me to use my powers to help the victors first. I'll give priorities to my Clanmates first, but it was the least I could do to repay them for the opportunities today."

KKKLLLLLOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG!!!

"..." Kaori would look over at Hogai as he dropped to one knee. "And that is why I didn't waste healing magic on myself first. As for your second concern..." She would lean in a little closer with her hands, pressing them rather forcefully against Kagae's wounds while channeling the healing powers of the kami. "Do you not think me capable of standing toe to toe with a bushi? You have another thing coming if that is the case."

Plainsfox
Kojiro stumbled backwards a little from the force of the blow and steadied himself before Hogai dropped to one knee. The ringing in Kojiro's ears would've blocked the words of any other man, but he had heard Hogai clearly.

"I thank you for this match, Lord Hida." Kojiro bowed deeply to the older Crab warrior and sheathed his katana. I finally appreciate a lesson my teachers tried to instill upon me. I shall remember to match the tools to the battle and I hope the next time we fight, I can give you an even greater challenge." With that, Kojiro would clumsily pick up his kusarigama and unsteadily walk back to where he was before.

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

A short while would proceed, while all the appropriate Path to Inner Peaces would be cast. Seppun Benjiro would announce the following brackets.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

With Kakita Zanzen's next opponent yet unsecured, the upper half of the brackets would continue as normal!

--------------------

Yoritomo Susumu and Horiuchi Sayoko would stand apart from another. Susumu would glare at Sayoko, calling out to her, "I'm not frightened of you, you little pissant! You'll be bleeding on the ground before you can even swing that fancy hammer of yours!" the Mantis would call out to her, tightly gripping his paired kama.

Sayoko would simply wait, in silence. Which only pissed Susumu off only more.

Round 1

Unfortunately for the Mantis, however, the Unicorn Bushi would win initiative. She would remain motionless, however, merely focusing on the Mantis.

"What, is this one of those honorable misconceptions of yours? Let me show you exactly what I think of your honor, Unicorn!" Susumu would announce, charging her for a full attack. {21 vs her TN... miss...} His attempt to use the Free Raises to butcher the Unicorn blew up in his face, and unfortunately for him, it probably wouldn't be the last thing to do so.

Round 2

With the Mantis right in front of him, Sayoko would raise her Dai Tsuchi upward, the head of the massive hammer eclipsing the sun from her opponent's perspective. On Full Attack herself, she would even raise twice, getting a total net of 9 raises dedicated to damage, before she laid into the Mantis {38 vs TN 24}.

With a crunch that probably echoed more loudly than Hida Hogai's headbutt, the Unicorn woman crunches the Mantis, Yoritomo Susumu, beneath the full brunt of her hammer blow; he is knocked prone and skids about 10 feet through the dirt, ending at the feet of several bushi. It looked like every single rib was broken, and he was bleeding profusely. Sayoko would simply turn and walk away once more. {56 out of 57 of Susumu's wounds}.

Shugenja and servants would all rush to the Mantis to see if he was alive, while several bushi backed the hell away.

Winner: Horiuchi Sayoko

--------------------

After the repercussions of a second rather brutal victory on her behalf, Kaiu Kagae would be next up to fight. Isawa Sosuke would look at his opponent with uncertain eyes, glancing repeatidly at the recently made trench.

"As much as I would relish an opportunity to engage such a skillful craftsman in battle... I've recently become indecisive about how badly I desire victory," he would mention rather casually to Kagae. He seemed more interested in learning how the Crab felt about recent revelations than starting the match.

Mongooseh
Wincing slightly as the healing magic done its work he replied to Kaori, "Sorry but I live quite a sheltered life and though I can expect all clanmates to be able to stand their own on the wall I did not think that you would choose to partake in the martials. Pardon me if I have offended you..."

Kagae was blushing from shame and from the contact of a female he hoped she would not notice and thought that he was blushing from shame.

Raganui Minamoto
With Sozen not wanting to talk, the Crane went back to watch the duels, in particular the first. It was a crushing victory, but an interesting one.

"Horiuchi Sayoko. Interesting. If I face you, I'll have to have a way to beat that hammer."

Plainsfox
"She is rather lethal, isn't she?" Kojiro commented to the Crane observing the duels. "I would not worry too much about her right now. Nothing good ever comes from planning for the wrong battle."

Raganui Minamoto
"Yes, I might have to cut through you or him." The last word had a hint of venom, obviously due to the Crane and the other's houses.

Plainsfox
"Him? Who him?" Kojiro turned his attention to the object of Zanzen's glare. "Oh! He...HIM" The Scorpion let out an exasperated sigh. "What a way to prove the Bayushi school's ability. I have yet to fight a samurai who is whole." Kojiro will shrug while trying to keep track of Horiuchi Sayako.

OOC: Investigation (3k2 result=17) roll if needed Last two are exploding dice.

Mongooseh
Kagae once again dressed himself after Kaori had healed him to make himself more presentable to the new person.

"Thanks for the aid Kaori-san..." thanked Kagae as he turned to talk to the phoenix.

"Well... I do not enjoy battle it is just that this was the only thing today that I'd be good at..." replied Kagae as he approached his opponent, "though I might aswell try where others have failed..."

With this he presented his katana and bowed to Isawa Sosuke.

(3k2 initiative Ill keep all three dice to account for the exploding so initiative 20.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

The Phoenix bushi would nod his head. "Very well. The Kaiu are known for their great smithing abilities. If you are the hammer, I will be your anvil. Let us see what we create, noble Crab!" Taking the basic attack stance, Sosuke would swing his nagamaki around, balancing it over his shoulders.

{Initiative of 15}

Kagae, you have initiative!

Mongooseh
Kagae nodded back and drew his katana taking a full defensive stance.

"Lets see how well your fire heats my blade phoenix."

(Current tnbh is 35)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Sosuke would furrow his brow, tightening his grip upon the handle of his nagamaki. "Ready or not, here I come!" he would announce, stepping confidently forward and slashing his nagamaki down upon the Kaiu's position! {Spears roll of 23 vs TN 35, miss}

The blade of the weapon would spark as it grazed off of the Crab's heavy armor, causing not even a single wound!

Kagae, you're up!

Mongooseh
Kagae responds to this half hearted attack with a half hearted one of his own. Lunging out he would attempt to attack.

(6k2 to attack 15 to hit.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Round 2

Sosuke would refocus his void into his Attack Rolls, his chi enveloping his blade as he would swing it with conviction upon the Crab warrior before him! {20 vs TN 25, miss}

Not convicting enough, it would seem! Once more, the long-bladed spear would rake the Crab's armor, doing nothing more than scratching the paint! Kagae, go!

Mongooseh
Kagae sighed as he realised this fight was going nowhere fast and decided to do something unpredicted and go on a full out attack. He would swing hard and fast at his opponent.

(raises into accuracy.)

(6k2 39 to hit)
(24 damage)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

In a desperate gambit, Kaiu Kagae would go all out and strike hard against Isawa Sosuke's blade; the twin metals would spark as the force of the blow caused Kagae to follow through and slash straight down across Sosuke's chest, leaving him quite Hurt!

Backing down, he would lift his left palm, calling for Kagae to halt. "It's obvious you want this victory more than I. My blade has failed me, where yours has not. I'm not quite ready to see my Yae-chan so soon, so I concede the match to you. Good fight, Kagae-san. You have shown me the indomitable spirit of the Crab first hand, and for that, I am grateful."

He would turn to Seppun Benjiro and nod his head, as the Magistrate would signal the end of the match.

Winner: Kaiu Kagae

Sosuke would turn and leave without the need of assistance to go get his wounds treated.

--------------------

Next up would come Kakita Zanzen, versus his mystery opponent. His opponent would enter the fighting area first, a cloak covering his clothes and face, disguising his identity. Who could it be?

Mongooseh
Kagae exits the area to where he was before sitting to watch the duels knowing that he will once again be called up to fight later on.

Raganui Minamoto
"Hmm, for a moment I thought I was without an opponent this round. But here we have one who does not reveal his face? No matter." The crane took the same stance as last time, though he frowned. The cloak could be hiding any number of small weaponry.

Init: 44

Psychofish
Martial Competition

"Ah, I was afraid that might come off untoward."

Maintaining the distance, the cloaked bushi drew the katana from his side- flicking his cloak open to reveal light armor, showing some signs of wear recently- and if one looked closely, what appeared to be a bit of only just drying blood near the places where the red kimono beneath that armor was parted.

"It seems another body was desired to balance the bracket. I did not feel it fair to flaunt my return to the others whom luck did not favor in the first round."

And with that, he reached one hand up and pushed the hood away from his face.

"I am Ujina Denbe. It is an honor."

[3k2 Initiative: 10]

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

"We've asked the competitors from the first bracket that did not win their first rounds; two were unwilling to compete, and one was unable." Seppun Benjiro would explain to not only Zanzen, but the rest of the samurai gathered here. "Ujina Denbe was the only one to accept the challenge of competing again, and wins the draft by default. When you are ready, gentlemen, you may fight!" And with that, the Magistrate would signal the two bushi to go!

Plainsfox
Kojiro's hands trembled in anticipation as his match was called forward. I hope to give you a better battle than I gave Lord Hida, Lion!" The Scorpion bushi said as he bowed to his opponent.

Initiative= 21
6k3. Drawing exploding dice from non kept dice.

Raganui Minamoto
"I see. But pushing yourself can lead to weariness." Taking a moment to consider the man, the Crane moved in quickly, unleashing a flash of steel in an arc from Denbe's left hip towards his right shoulder, the sword sheathing again just as fast.

Attack: 8k5

38 to hit.

Keith Valken Lionheart
Seichiro smiled, then bowed down to the Scorpion. "We shall see. For now, let us enjoy the bout, shall we?" He quickly drew his Katana, ready for action.

6K3 Initiative

Plainsfox
Kojiro restrained himself enough to let the Seppun officiator call a start to the match before drawing his Katana and stalking to the Lion's blindside and aiming a blow at Seichiro!.

6k3. Exploding dice will be drawn from unkept dice first.

Total: 22 >< Your go, Keith.

Keith Valken Lionheart
Seichiro would swiftly evade, and quickly counterattacked, sending a downward diagonal slash at the Scorpion.

6k3+3, and I ignore your armor bonus.

Plainsfox
Kojiro's eyes widened as the one-eyed Matsu unleashed a strike that barely missed skewering the Bayushi through a seam in his light armor. The Scorpion took that moment to strike though.

Katana TH: 6k3

Edit: Another 22

Keith Valken Lionheart
He would quickly sidestep, taking the moment to do a quick horizontal cut across the Scorpion's torso.

6K3+3

Plainsfox
The agile warrior again dodged one of Seichiro's expert blows and growled Where's your family's vaunted rage, Matsu? If you have none to show me, then I'll show you my own!"

Full Attack! Kojiro will use both of his raises to reduce Seichiro's TNtbH to 16! (During Seichiro's turn, Kojiro will be at 15 TNtbH and Seichiro will receive three raises)

Katana: 6K3

Total: 24

Keith Valken Lionheart
That definitely hurt Seichiro, both physically and a bit of his pride as well. Well then, no more games. He wanted Matsu fury, well, his wish has been granted. he grit his teeth, and tightened the grip on his Katana, and would strike at him, adding a loud Kiai! strike to his attack.

Full Attack Stance 6k3+3, ignoring armor, spending Void point to ignore wound penalties, using 1 of the raises to bring Kojiro's TNBH down -5, for a total of 10 to his BH.

Psychofish
A glimmer, just a glimpse of the blade, and fire bloomed across his shoulder. He almost did not believe he had actually been cut so quickly until his left hand touched the wet spot spreading from the part in his cloak. He cracked a weak smile in disbelief. Holding the wound as if he could keep the blood from spilling, and shakily raising his katana in his other hand.

"But a man who stands still goes... goes nowhere..."

In demonstration, or perhaps just irony, the bushi managed but a single step forward, and collapsed first to a knee, eyes going dull and blinking as he struggled to hold his katana high enough to strike and stand again for but a second more.

And collapsed, face down.

Today was not a good day for Denbe.

Plainsfox
Well, I guess I now know what he was saving his rage for Kojiro thought as Seichiro's katana sliced through his flesh.

The scorpion collapsed onto his knees in pain and disbelief. Am I unready to face you, Great Grandfather?

After that, Kojiro fully fell on the ground, face first.

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

Kakita Zanzen and Ujina Denbe would ready their match. Each would stare down the other, each holding the hilts of their katanas firmly. Denbe's sword would be at his side, while Zanzen's would still be SSHHIIINNNNGGGGG~!

... wut.

In a sudden bright flash and a bit of red spray, Denbe would tip over and faceplant into the ground, causing the judging Magistrate to hold his hand up to his face and sigh. That was over too quickly.

Winner: Kakita Zanzen

--------------------

After the twice-defeated Hare was dragged off, a much anticipated matchup would occur: That between the Scorpion Bayushi Kojiro and the yet-unseen Lion Matsu Seichiro! They respectfully greeted one another, and waited for the go-ahead to begin the match.

Once the signal was given, Kojiro would attempt to strike at Seichiro's blind spot; something he had grown accustomed to his opponents trying for their first strike. He blocked with his own katana, slipping away from the follow-through like an expert duelist. However, his own counterstrike was likewise evaded by the wily scorpion.

Kojiro would try to catch Seichiro off balance before he could recover, but once more missed, but bounded out of the way of the incoming blade himself. If this kept up, neither would get anywhere.

The Scorpion Bushi would attempt to up the odds, putting his all into a guaranteed strike that the Matsu could not avoid. And his strike WOULD be true, cutting into the Lion's side! But... Kojiro would realize he put a little too much effort into it, and was too close to dodge this time as a savage strike heading straight for him was the last thing he saw, before he was laid out like a punk.

Winner: Matsu Seichiro

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duels:

A short time later, the next round of duels would be up. Only four bushi remained, all eager to test their skills against one another. And, as chance would have it, only one needed healing after the previous round, so it would be that much quicker for the next one to begin!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Horiuchi Sayoko would be one of the first two to duel, once more eagerly clutching her Dai Tsuchi as she would await for her Crab opponent to show. He had managed to survive the test of two skilled warriors, but she would be the one to break his shell; she was sure of it.

Kaiu Kagae, are you ready to face this fierce, heavily armed, heavily armored opponent? If so, come and roll initiative!

Mongooseh
Kagae sighed as he looked at his opponent but he walked out onto the duelling area presented his katana as his weapon and bowed.

"I am Kaiu Kagae and I am your opponent..." Kagae said sheepishly now that he was closer how much bigger the dai tsuchi was.

(3k2 last 2 incase of splody dice)
(13 Initiative.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Sayoko would stand opposite of Kagae, balancing the weight of her two-handed weapon in one hand as if it was a mere tanto; truly, the strength of this woman would be tremendous. She let out several long, hoarse breaths, not taking her eyes off of her opponent. Her eyes, cold, uncaring... dead to the world, almost.

"You... underestimate me. I can see it in the way you stand, the sound of your voice, the way you look at me. I'll crush anyone who thinks they can stand in my way." she would say from beneath her full helmet, her voice dark and dreary, almost pained.

{Initiative of 17}

She would step closer, closer, closer still to Kagae, until she was in striking range of him.

"Allow me to show you."

And she would focus upon her opponent, gaining a Free Raise for her first attack against Kagae.

Kagae, you're up!

Mongooseh
Confused and slightly frightened that the lady did not strike him he immediately took up a defensive stance in hope of not getting hit as he circled around his opponent.

(Well nothing lost and gained in that roll.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Sayoko's cold gaze would follow Kagae as he began his circling dance around her. "Have you so little faith in your own work, Crab? If you insist, I will show you the flaws in your design..."

She makes what appears to be a mock swing with her hammer, clanging it against Kagae's armor, but not even putting a dent in it. Was she just toying with him? {15 vs TN 25, miss}

Mongooseh
"Hmmm?" Pondered Kagae as the hammer bounced off him sending him back a bit.

'Lets try something new' thought Kagae to himself as he prepared a full attack stance and charged.

(6k2 to attack the two raises put into to hit 28 to hit.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

In a desperate maneuver, Kagae would throw everything he had into a desperate strike, swinging his katana with a ferocity that would cause his ancestors to brim with pride! It wasn't until after he opened his eyes after his blind attack that he would see that he had cleaved through the Unicorn's armor!

"You... you... you cut me!" she somewhat exclaimed, her voice more audible and less sinister due to the shock. Blood would drip down the front, as she was clearly Injured from the attack!

"I WON'T STAND FOR THIS!!" she suddenly screeched, going Full Attack and raising twice, dedicating 7 free raises and 2 regular raises all to damage! Operation: Brash Disadvantage is a go! {Heavy Weapons roll of 19 vs TN 50, miss. What the hell, Sayoko!}

Suddenly, her seemingly deadly precision was shot as she threw her ENTIRE weight into the blow in an attempt to crush the Crab into a fine paste, but the Kaiu was able to take it to the sode, or shoulder piece, of his armor without taking any actual harm!

Kagae, you have initiative, and 3 free raises!

Mongooseh
After side stepping the attack Kagae would keep up the unrelenting attacks this time aiming for her now exposed back. He sliced downwards for a gap in her armour in a full attack stance.

(4 raises into hitting 6k2 one raise into damage.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

Sayoko spends her last void point to reduce the damage by 10, the strike Kagae makes barely grazing her arm and causing no noticeable damage to speak of.

"I'LL KILL YOU!" she shouted, learning from her prior mistake; she raises twice like before, but on this Full Attack, she pours 3 of the free raises to boost her accuracy, leaving a total of 6 (4 free and 2 regular) to boost her damage. She would attempt to lay into the Crab again! However, this was was equally evaded like the last, as Kagae's armor proves to be his salvation! {666 = 18 vs TN 35, another miss!}

Kagae, go, with 3 free raises!

Mongooseh
"You're going to kill yourself at this rate!" Shouted Kagae swinging at her in a half hearted attempt at putting her out but not killing her.

"Are you that desperate to win?"

(6k2 attack all free raises into hitting.)
(42 to hit)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

This time, Kagae's latest slash seemed to take, nearly Crippling the Unicorn warrior.

"NO ONE CAN STAND BEFORE ME! I'LL CRUSH YOU ALL BENEATH MY BOOT!" was all she would scream back, nearly foaming at the mouth as she did another Full Attack, this time without any raises of her own, using the boost to deliver at least ONE blow... any blow will do. {Attack roll of 16 vs TN 30, miss} This one was just as clumsy and unpredictable as the rest, and it seemed more and more likely that she would no longer pose the Crab a threat.

Kagae, you have initiative with 3 free raises!

Raganui Minamoto
"... this is bad... They need to call this, she's gone berserk and is either going to kill him or force him to kill her..." His hand tightens around his blade's sheathe. If they didn't stop the match, he would, even if it cost him the tournament.

Mongooseh
Kagae looked at the woman in disdain and wondered why she was going so far for this duel.
And once again tried to strike without doing too much damage in a full attack pose.

(All 5 raises into hitting. 6k2) (42 to hit.)

Rain Yupa
@ Martial Duel:

It took a flurry of light, grazing blows. Kagae wasn't even entirely sure how he managed to pull it off. But he whittled down Sayoko enough where she had lost enough blood to be able to stand anymore, as she collapsed to one knee.

"I... I'll get you... Kaiu Kagae! I won't... ever give up! Do you hear me? Never... I'll see you... dead for this! for this... humiliation!" she swore through gritted teeth, her eyes focused on him, staring tantos into his very soul.

"That's enough, Sayoko." Seppun Benjiro would intercede, stepping forth. "Your efforts were both noble, but you are in no condition to proceed with the match. I must declare this match a victory on behalf of Kaiu Kagae." Turning towards the young Crab, he would nod. "Mercifully done, my boy." And with that, he would simply turn and walk away.

Winner: Kaiu Kagae

Mongooseh
Kagae obviously slightly shocked by the womans words he immediately left the duelling area and found himself a corner to collect his thoughts.

'I didn't expect to come this far... Obviously these duels mean more to some people than it does for me...' Kagae silently thought to himself.

Keith Valken Lionheart
Seichiro watched the battle between the Crab and Unicorn unfurl in front of him. The Unicorn warrior was very brave, but hard-headed and foolish to keep this charade for too long, thus risking her own life. Still, the Crab did admirably.
