Zoutout Merlin the White Zoutout Ah, well. The spelling doesn't really matter that much - it's the chanting and focus that counts. I just want to point out Zoot, that there's a difference between meditation and chanting, which is what you're reffering to. Meditation is the practice of understanding your mind, which is probably a very poor explanation, although coming from someone who is relatively new at this stuff, what do you expect? Whereas chanting and Mantram recitation is the practice of chanting certain words or phrases in order to express devotion to a certain Boddhisattva, and or the Dharma in general. Really? I thought it was a means to help you focus on understanding aspects of your mind better. Oh, well. The Metta Bhavna I'm doing in the meetings at the moment doesn't involve changintg anyway. Well, learn something new everyday, thanks for the clarification Zoot. Maybe I should take my own advice and be more careful to not sound like an authority on something I'm probably newer to than the person I'm talking to. redface

Well, don't take what I said as correct - there's a decent probability that my interpretation may be incorrect.

crystal_raye Being the lazy procrastinater I am I don't meditate as often as I should. As I have already been told by many people, it isn't how often or how long you meditate, its the quality of meditation. Just remember, Buddhism is supposed to help improve your life, not be it, (unless you're a member of the clergy, xd ), so don't stress out if you don't get a chance to meditate for an hour every day. Remember, there are other ways to practice.

With the amount of work I have to do now, I might not even manage to do it at the med soc.
Still, I hopefully have a long life ahead of me to get better. One of my aims is to live in a Shaolin temple, training for a while.

And once we're done with that, we hit a bell, chant a few lines, and then meditate some more. Think of it a spiritual boot camp.

I cant sit still for very long for anything. Just the way I am, butthat doesnt stop me from being and lazy and getting fat eek I meditate whenever there is a spare moment in my day. Just stand there and breathe. I just do breathing meditation at the moment. I dont think Im ready for anything else yet until I recieve some proper instructions and teachings. (I need more from what I can find from books)

An intresting one we did in the society recently was the sitting exercise, and to explain it they used a story:
There was someone standing under a tree on top of a hill, and there were three people watching him. "He's waiting for a friend" said the 1st "No, he's upset and wallowing in pity" (note: There were 3 people, but I can't remember what this one actually was) "No, he's a monk, he's meditating!" They went up the hill to talk to him "Are you waiting for a friend?" "No" "Are you wallowing in pity?" "No" "So then you're a monk, and you're meditating?" "No, I'm just standing here"

Since I'm usually on the go, I don't have time to sit and meditate, but luckily there are several forms of meditation which can be done without sitting. There is walking meditation, breathing meditation, there is moment-to-moment-awareness meditation, and so forth.
Meditating on the go is profoundly easy, and quite rewarding.
