Amaya smiled and bowed her head to the group. "Please enjoy your meal," she said brightly. "I'll be by to check on you in a bit!"

And with that, she rushed off to clear another table that had just been vacated.

"Poor woman," Shiro murmured, watching her as she hurried off. "I don't think they were expecting to be this busy. It doesn't look as if they have enough staff."

He took a bite of his sandwich, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"Here's a thought," he mused aloud. "What if I got my hands on a touchscreen that has biometric capabilities? That way, I don't need a separate thing for the fingerprint thing. If I could get my hands on that, I could just use the screen itself to turn it on, would that work?"

He didn't see why not, personally. And as for Kali's comment about wondering why people kept an eye on the family ... well. That sort of went without saying.

"Hmm... indeed, for a completely new place that is kind of unexpected..."

She looked thoughtful at Shiro's suggestion. Only Shiro could take something simple and then make it very complicated.

Absently taking a sandwich from the plate, Kali shook her head, "As nice as the idea would be, to have the screen active every time it is touched will mean it'll probably turn on accidentally every time it's jostled, it's a waste of batteries of that happens. Of course... not that anyone knows what happens to items in runed bags, so maybe it wouldn't be as impractical as it sounds."

She wasn't worried about programs being turned on automatically, most tablets had a bar that needed to be slid (virtual of course) in order to show all the icons. Just in case for some reason the button got accidentally pressed.

"I could program it not to turn fully on without the thumbprint, that's what I mean," Shiro explained patiently as he started eating. "Without my thumbprint, or finger print, or handprint, or whatever, it wouldn't come out of hibernation. That's what I want. Like I said, I'll worry about the programming."

He paused. "Do you think you could draw up a schematic of what it might end up looking like? Map it out? I don't know if you have a design program on your tablet, you can use my laptop if you need."

Though that would be annoying since all he had for maneuverability was a touch mouse, which was far from efficient.

"Once I have a design and know exactly what I'm going to have to work with, I'll start on an operating system," he added. "I can order the parts, and hopefully by the time they arrive, I'll be finished the program."

Kali sighed as she set aside her sandwich and took up her own tablet, with her pen in one hand. She was tempted to ask him how he planned to have it scan his print without being out of hibernation at all. The device had to be 'on' to some sort of capacity in order to scan his print, there was no way it could not use any energy to do so. It needed to use energy to realize that whatever it touched was not a print at all, or at least not Shiro's print. Which meant still every time it was jostled that aspect would be activated, and while the amount of power used would be minuscule at best, it did add up if it this program was activated often enough (and who knows what he was going to do with it), and it was just a waste knowing how much battery power he used.

She thought of this as she sketched out the plans using her felt tipped pen. She loved this application she got for it. Though it didn't solve the one problem she couldn't figure out the problem for. It was wasteful, and Shiro seemed to know what he wanted better than she, but from an engineering stand point she wasn't sure if that was wise. In the end she jolted a small what if equation for him, noting about how the print scan would work. The reason why she didn't want to vocally say it, was because she didn't want to test Shiro's patience in case he did have something in mind to get around that problem.

One never knew, she was good at what she did, but she was not the mega computer that Shiro was.

"My reason for owning a tablet," she then spoke up as she continued to draw, "Much easier when I want to do something like this..."

Shiro chuckled softly. "That comes as no surprise to me," he admitted with a grin. "It's one of the reasons I want a touchscreen."

He leaned against the back of the booth and sipped at his milk - the strawberry milk.

"Depending on the dimensions, I'll either buy a case for it, or ask someone to make one," he mused. "That way it's protected from damage, and even just unintentional contact. Especially the screen, I would really worry about that. They're touchy."

Reaching over with her free hand, Kali took up her sandwich again. She realized right then and there, that she had no idea what sort of parts Shiro would order.

How stupid of her, it would mean roughly speaking because otherwise he won't know what to order.

"It probably won't be any bigger than the biggest one available because that would be impractical."

Touch screens were wonderful things but they were no good beyond something like this application (mainly because of finger prints).

"They already have the weight of a good book," she commented.

Actually it occurred to her she didn't know what screen material he was going to use, especially if he chose something off market. Not your normal fare...

She handed him her rough sketch.

"It's rough because I do not know the exact parts you'll be using, what you chose to use will in the end affect the schematics of it all."

Shiro looked at the design, then realized what she meant. He had been far too vague in his descriptions. It looked good so far, but on the other hand, he hadn't really given her anything concrete to work with.

"Why don't I email you the details that I have so far?" he asked her, passing her tablet back. "I've got it all here. Sizes, connections, everything."

He turned his laptop around. He had on the screen a modified list of all the parts he had available to him - modified in that suppliers and prices were hidden. The ones he was looking for were collected to one side of the page in 3D, rotating images.

"Just hover the mouse over the one you want to look at, it's got dimensions, requirements, what they're made of ...everything you could need," he explained. "If you think your tablet could handle the page, I'll send it to you."

She studied it for a moment, now that was quite useful to her. Kali nodded at this, "This will do and my tablet should be fine."

There was a good reason why she indulged and got the most RAM possible (that and it was all that was left in the stores at the moment).

Shiro smiled, relieved, and turned his laptop back towards himself. He would have to reprogram the page a bit so that it would load on a regular browser, but that wouldn't take long at all.

"I'll send the whole page," he murmured as his fingers flew over the keys, a blur to anyone who might be watching. "If you think there would be something better than what I had picked out, just let me know and we can take a look at it."

He finished with the reprogramming, then saved the page as a massive file and opened his email. "Same address as always?" he asked her, glancing at her over the top of his screen.

"Same as always," Kali replied, "I do have more than one but it all goes to this wonderful program where I have access to all my accounts at once."

Very useful when she wanted to divide up spam, work, pleasure and so forth.

"Of course," Shiro chuckled as he clicked the Send button. "I should have known you would. Very convenient that way."

He pushed his laptop to the side and closed the lid. "There. Sent. And now I can eat."

He started in on the sandwich, eating somewhat voraciously. Working gave him an appetite - not that you could tell by looking at him. He ate like a horse, but never put on any weight.

"Don't forget, Shiro," Ura spoke up, holding his nearly empty glass of milk in his hands. "You will need to make sure that it doesn't overheat. You'll need a good cooling system."

Shiro cursed in Japanese. "K'saa. Right. It's a good thing I emailed the entire page. Kali, should I write that down or will you remember?"

Kali hadn't even set her tablet aside yet, so she had begun to already tap through the drawings she did have. Writing in the margins about needing a cooling system of some sort. It was coming a less of a tablet and more of a flat computer.

"Question, is there at any time you'd want a keyboard?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:02 pm

"If the tablet's going to be ten inches or more," Shiro replied, "then not likely. Though if I do, I could just use a USB one. Don't worry about it."

He paused. "A disc drive. For the small CDs, the ones that are half size. Minis. I'd like one of them. Just in case. Never know if I'll have to give someone something that can't be risked on an open network."

"What about a laser keyboard?" Kali asked making a few more notes.

This was becoming a bit much, this really wasn't a tablet anymore. Tablets by nature were a matter of convenience for small things. It was also becoming more complicated, she really should take a good look at Shiro's list to see what she could get to play with.

"You should copyright this..."
