But I'm less worried about balancing the sides than I am about actually teaching people to play, so it might remain a 3-person role to emphasize to as many newbies as possible the importance of communication.

I'm going to kind of highjack this a little, since I think it could be a helpful learning experience.
At the end of the day, I think all the players should send in their thoughts to a mod via PM (or myself if I'm not playing), and at the end of the game, we can sort of construct a play-by-play of how things went so that everyone gets a feel for what the full scope of the game is.
