Sekhmet didn't think there was much chance for them to like her, but she kept the comment to herself. She knew she wasn't very social, and it suited her. She didn't really like being around a lot of people and knew she had a short temper, both of which could get her in trouble. But, she didn't want to make life more difficult than it had to be, so she'd try her best to be nice. Well... try at least.

Ah, home sweet home. Kanesakht entered quickly, moving down the hall towards his room to put his purchases away.

"The rest of your day is free," he called back to her. "Do what you will. Hanukhemetu lives rather close by - he has the two-storey house - and has two apprentices around your age. They're nicer than I.

"Use your time in whatever way you wish. Tomorrow you study the few things you need to know for an upcoming ritual. Tomorrow night, we perform it."

Sekhmet couldn't think of anything to do, and she didn't really want to meet any others, so she decided to just go back to her room for a bit. On the way there, she passed the mask she had talked to. She paused and stared at it, wondering what it was used for and what Kanesakht's book would say about it.

"Kanesakht is a lot to say," she told the mask. "Wonder what he would do if I called him Kane," she added and laughed a little. Then she went about telling the mask all that she had done that day, since she didn't have anyone else to lend her frustration upon. It was a good item to talk to. It didn't interrupt and yet it seemed to understand.

"And they treated me like a child. I mean, I know I am... But I don't wanna be treated that way. I wanna be treated like I actually know something. 'm not inferrior..." she muttered and sighed.

((Sorry about it being so long. I haven't had a lot of time and when I could get on, I honestly couldn't think of anything... sweatdrop ))

(('sokay. xd ))

After a while, Kanesakht took to standing near enough to Sekhmet to listen to her, but far enough away not to be seen. He listened to her monologue with the mask, a slow smile spreading across her lips.

"You won't feel inferior tomorrow," he murmured to himself, then headed off down the hallway again.

A few minutes later, Sekhmet could probably hear the sound of jumping and of something striking stone or something similar in another room.

Sekhmet jumped when she heard a noise, something unidentifiably. She tilted her head and walked a little down the hall, but stopped. Whatever it was, it had to be Kanesakht doing it and she didn't want to interrupt him. He wouldn't like it and despite how he'd, undoubtably, purposfully treated her like a child that day, she wasn't going to go looking for trouble. At least, not now anyways. She'd find some way to get to him.

So she decided to go rest. They'd done a lot of walking today and she was a little tired, so she went to her room, climbed into her basket, and closed her eyes. Her last thought before drifting off was whether she could get her mother to send her some bright dyes. Like pink and yellow. Mostly pink.

She smiled in her sleep.

The next morning, Sekhmet may have woken up to a rather nice-smelling breakfast deposited, once more, mysteriously by her bed. Hanu had dropped off some nice herbs, it seemed, and they were mixed into some sort of oatmeal.

Kanesakht was sitting in one of the main rooms, a small writing desk perched on his legs, gouging something into a stone dish filled with wax. It seemed to be like a sort of... scratchpad?

"Hm," he murmured to himself. "She'll need to know the proper respect and a few ritual responses, but that's all that it would be prudent for her to practice..."

((We can practice that if you REALLY want to, or just skip to the ritual itself and wing it. xd ))

Sekhmet woke up from a light sleep, for her dreams had not been pleasant ones that night. She shook of a little drowsiness and ate her breakfast, licking her lips when she was done. Then she went in search of Kane.

She found him in one of the large rooms, doing something rather curious. She padded over to him and looked up at him, her head tilted to one side.

"What's that?" she couldn't stop herself from asking the rather childish-sounding question. She looked at the dish and blinked.

((Hmmm, could we pretend she practiced and skip to the ritual? Or is that what you meant? sweatdrop ))

((Exactly what I meant. heart I'll write the lead up here, then a post in the council hall to start the ritual. Just be formal... I'll tell you anything you need to know via AIM. But Sekhmet's gonna be kept in the dark about a good portion of it... xd ))

Kanesakht glanced up. "Making sure I teach you everything you need to know. We start lessons now. This will probably be the least work-intensive ritual you will ever perform, so you had better get it right..."

Sekhmet walked rather happily back into Kane's house, proud that she had passed the test and was now officially an apprentice. She itched to tell her mother, but knew she could not for she could not read nor write yet and she was not going to have Kane write her private words to her mother. She'd find a way to tell her, somehow.

But for the moment, she just basked in her pride.

A few days after the ritual of formal apprenticeship, Kanesakht woke Sekhmet up with a rap on the head. "Time to get up - I have an errand for you to run. Once you're done, you'll have free time and a bit of spending money to do as you will with."

"Errand? What kind of errand?" Sekhmet asked, sitting up. One paw came up to rub her eye and she blinked at him. She hoped it wasn't to some place she hadn't gone before. She remembered those places, but she wondered if she might get lost trying to find a place on her own.

And she hoped it wasn't a book he needed. She didn't like Marseth at all. She was perfectly fine with Eletherta and Aldrasath, though she knew it couldn't be a ritual item he needed her to get. They were too dangerous for her to get on her own. Hanu was a little too eager to please, but she'd run to his house any day over the bookstore and its rude, bug-eyed, and very combersomly dressed shopkeeper.

"I need you to check and see if a book I turned over to Marseth has been rebound yet. If it has, just tell her to charge it to my account, and carry it back with this." He pushed a smallish basket, made so she could carry it easy in her mouth while walking, towards her. "And if she doesn't, your work is over for the day, and you can do as you will. Here's some spending money, though not much. You've earned it with the chores you've been doing since the ritual. Now. Breakfast is waiting in the front room, and I need to go.

"I trust you'll be all right on your own?"

Sekhmet's ears drooped when he mentioned Marseth, but she nodded anyways.

"I'll be fine," she said, getting out of her basket. "Does the book have a title, or will she know?" she asked, looking up. The crown of beads upon her head clinked lightly with the movement.

After getting Kane's answer, she hurried through her breakfast and left, the basket firm in her mouth. She figured, the sooner she left and got the task over with, the sooner she could escape the crowded shop and Marseth.
