I'm such a sucker for the red death costumes. But I am a huge fan of the original musical costume with the full skull mask that had the flapping jaw. That was friggin' awesome. Scared the hell out of me when I saw it for the first time when I was really little and it kicked arse!

I like the musical version and Lon Chaney versions of the Red Death. I didn't like the one in the new movie at all... this is because the costume is supposed to be so out there that everyone is blown away and he is supposed to really stand out from everyone else...

Personally, besides mine(I mean, who wouldn't love their own Red Death costume?) I loved two others: The one Crawford wore and the one Ron Bohmer wore...^^; Teeheehee.

I have a Red Death Costume fetish! I love all of them, but the Lon Chaney version and the 1989 Robert Englund version are tied for favorite, the new movie coming in a close second (thepantsaresotightwithoutthecodpeice!) and the play coming in at third.

I much prefer the Broadway one. Its just that, when I listen to "Why so Silent?" The whole part when he first comes in, right after the "main theme" comes on, theres that doom (3 second pause) doom (3 second pause) etc, then "Why so silent good moseures?" Just seems better if he's got this wickedly crazed poofy outfit on and grinning, knowing that he's struck fear into everyone.

Thank you SOMEONE for bringing it up! My sister wouldn't believe me that Masque of the Red Death was from Poe. Of course, she also didn't believe me that red and yellow made orange. sweatdrop

Anyways, I like the movie version because it's sexier... I know that the phantom isn't supposed to be attractive, and I've made MANY a rant about that, but the costume just seemed cooler to me. One problem: it didn't say 'Do not touch me, I am the Red Death stalking abroad' on the back. And, I'll have to read it again, but in the book, wasn't the costume a little less noticeable? I mean, people just saw the face/mask and that's what started the talking (that and the creepy walking back and forth, back and forth...)

The Broadway version, though, was poofy. And I like poofy costumes. It's harder to pull out a sword and stab someone, but you could hide a cat in the sleeves and throw it at their face without warning. And if you fall, you won't get hurt! Plus it's dramatic.

Actually, the whole Red Death came from a short story by Edgar Allen Poe called The Masque of the Red Death. It's basically the story of these people shutting themselves inside of a castle to escape some rampaging plauge (which is of course called the red death). One night they decide to hold a masquerade ball, and at the stroke of midnight they become aware of a figure that none of them had noticed before. He is dressed in the garments of the grave with splotches of blood on them...um I can't remember how his face was described, but basically it's the embodiment of the disease, red death. Everyone dies in the end (very typical of a Poe story).

I liked the Broadway costume better because it stuck closer to the novel's description of the costume, and because the costume in the movie is not something that's going to stop on entire masquerade. Really if it wasn't for the music change and the camera centering on him you probably wouldn't have much noticed him.

I've always wondered if the Red Death from Phantom was taken from Poe's story, or if it was the other way around. I always thought it was the former, but was The Masque of the Red Death written first?

I agree about the costume: the Broadway version was more true to the novel, and I liked it more. Plus, I just thought the movie costume was ugly.

I believe The Masque of the Red Death was written first. Everything I've read seems to agree with that, and these are people who have enough time to do that sort of research.

I didn't think the movie version was ugly. It just wasn't big enough, and I'm one of those people who wish that the movie had stuck more to the book. That probably explains some things.

Kinda off topic, but there is a great scene in the book "Angel of the Opera", which explains that Poe's story came first.

Sherlock Holmes is hird to investigate the Opera Ghost, and he shows up at the Masquarade dress as Quasimodo(sp?). When Erik sees Holmes following him, he quotes a line from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Holmes retorts with a line from Poe's "Masque of the Red Death."
