Galvanth was not alone in his misery of being hemmed in. Silent Xalth sat near the big Benden bronze, pointedly ignoring the Trine browns and bronzes nearby. He didn't want to be here. Sure, they were invited to attend, but couldn't they have shown up anyway without feeling pressured to? Or, at least, be allowed to sit elsewhere. Not that he didn't mind his fellow Benden dragons, oh no, it was the fact that His wasn't in a good place to be able to swoop down and protect, like Jivith and His. The blue shot a look of jealousy to his fellow blue, glowering for a moment before turning his attention to the Sands.

Easy, Xalth, easy, R'vik soothed from his seat, somewhere in the middle of the stands, Don't mind him. I'm sure Jivith's place is one that has a better view of Trine's Greens than the Sands itself. He twisted in his seat and scanned the ledges for Xalth, giving His a nod before turning around to watch the Sands. As the eggs began to hatch, R'vik scooted to the edge of his seat and leaned forward, watching eagerly. So far, it appeared that Trine Hatchings were similar to how they occurred at Benden, nevermind that there were more eggs.

Though a bronze first? He let out a low whistle at that, marveling. A bronze with an even temper too, it seemed! He scooted back in his seat to let K'la pass – seriously, how did she do her hair? – before scooting forward again, grinning at the green who hatched. He was about to make a comment when the little bronze pushed his way through the Candidates, choosing instead to Impress to someone in the Stands.

“Haha! Well now, that's a sudden change in weather,” he grinned, watching the new pair for a moment before turning to watch the green continue to look for Hers.

For a moment, just a moment, he had locked eyes with the little bronze. Everything else in his body had locked up, and then he had gone on to clambor...into the Stands? Every theory he had about Candidates and white and what was the point of even being on the Sands if anyone could Impress? Well. It was better than between, and slowly his muscles unlocked. The feeling was not one the boy ever cared to feel again, and steeling his mind, he told himself it would not happen again! Dragons didn't like cowards, and besides. He wasn't a coward! But that one moment...it was very unsettling.

A little warble alerted Sheridan that the goggling youths in the group of boys were not alone, and the little green was almost forlornly trying to garner attention from the group who were about as stunned as the miner's apprentice had been when the bronze had looked him in the face. "Hey. Hey guys. We've got a lady in our midst." She wasn't looking at him, so he could find a voice. Maybe that would help?

Who knew!

Silbakor was speaking to the caravan master when a subtle humming caught his attention. Glancing around it took him a moment to determine that it was coming from the dragons and increasing in intensity. The hatchings starting! A look from his master and he turns to find his sister. No doubt she'd want to be at the fore of all of this. The rest of the caravan would meet them in the stands.

He jogged towards his wagon, knowing at this time of day his sister would be nearby. "Optheli! Lets go before we miss any of it!" Finally the hatching. He was glad that the pale cast by the death of the crimson would finally be lifted. Hatching was a good time.

Optheli was diligently tending the beasts that pulled her and Silbakor's wagon. The humming caused her to look around and frown. If some weyrbrat was playing pranks... "Optheli! Lets go before we miss any of it!" the voice of her brother rings out. 'Theli gasps and scrambles to meet him. "We actually get to watch?!"

Together they trot off and join the throngs swarming into the hatching stands. They find a large section and sit. She leans forward on the rail to get a better look at the sands. The eggs were wobbling so!

~~~~~~~~
Silbakor was amused by the big bronze as he took a seat to observe the candidates. A very level headed one to be sure. Ah, he's found the one he wants, watching as the bronze makes his way among the candidates. To his surprise, the bronze goes right through all of them and makes his way onto the stands.
To his utter stun the dragon comes to sit beside him on the other side of Optheli. Green eyes meet his.
Mine, do you have spice to go with the meat? Your Scarath is so hungry but it would taste better if you did... Silbakor blinks a moment, "what?" Beside him he hears 'Theli squeal and up jump and down in excitement. "Well yes, I have many spices... but are you sure you want some?"
Optheli can barely contain herself to see who the bronze impresses. He was certainly taking his time in picking a candidate. Then the bronze climbs up into the stands and plops himself next to her brother. She can barely contain her joy! Squealing, jumping up and down. "Silbakor! Is he yours? What's his name?"
Liyar watched with curiosity,her heart pounding. Would she stand alone this hatching?She hoped not.Liyars eyes fell to the bronze,watching him in fasination as he apraised the boys on the sands.Apparently,to everyones surprise,or at least her own,the bronze went for the stands! She watchdd him,shocked as he found His. At least he seemed fine. Liyar turned back to the grounds,the shy looking green present. Liyar watched as she looked for her own,and waited,her heart thundering.
Moira would have spit at S'raid and his stupid Benden bronze, were she not suddenly caught up in the events of the Hatching. The bronze had passed by the Candidates, and was headed for the crowds. Moira watched in awe as the bronze rather gently made his way through and found his rider. The very first egg to hatch had been a bronze, and a Stands impression on top of it! Moira smiled, a genuine one for the first time in weeks, and watched as the dragon sat down behind his new bondmate.
Someday, her thoughts whispered in the back of her mind.
Neener neener, S'raid would have said, if only he had known what Moira would have done. If only he had also been about five Turns old. If only he had also not been watching the goings on on the Sands with wild interest. For a Bronze to both hatch first and Impress first... that was, well, impressive. He pursed his lips, brow furrowing in thought, and wondered. So far, it seemed that the fertility of the Atypical minded Weyrs was serving Trine well. Interesting. Was there added oomph that came with having unusual clutches? Perhaps.
It was quite strange to see a Weyr that strayed so far from tradition doing so well. Galvanth was silent with tension during the moments leading up to the Impression, and when the little Bronze found his rider, he gave an instinctive rumble of approval. S'raid, who knew his dragon's voice anywhere, would have sighed at this, but there was nothing for it. Now to see where the Green would go. Would her Impression be from the Stands as well?
Had been collecting Wherry eggs when the first hums caught his ears. He was truly glad that he had been taken off his duties to Brendan folks and moved on to more common weyr duties after 'the incident'. After all he owed Trine for choosing him, feeding and training him. That deserved a certain amount of loyalty from the stubborn minded boy. And well those that went against it wern't worth time trying to pacify and treat with any sort of respect, at least not in his eyes. The only reason he'd done it before because it was the good folk of Trine that had asked it of him. And they'd shown themselves to all be fairly nice to him, if it a bit grouchy and demanding on occasion (but he was used to that from his father) still he hadn't really bonded to anyone here as a friend or companion and he privetly longed for that.
The fact that he might get that from a dragon was a strange idea for him but a attractive one so as the call came he quickly ended his task, shoving his basket into the hands of a startled stranger that passed he bolted towards the candidate brackets. There the robes pulled on and a moment to brush back his hair and make himself at least semi presentable. His mother always said it was important to look your best for special events.
This sorted he was able to fall into the main crowd heading onto the sands. At least it wasn't hard to see who he was meant to be with since they were all wearing the same white robes as him. A blessing considering when Zal's mind was wondering like this he was he could have easily walked into the line for the stands without noticing.
So at last he ended up on the sands. stuck somewhere close to the centre of the crowd of boys, but not bothered a great deal by this as he was tall enough to grant him a god look over the heads of the other candidates and look at the sands.
Which meant he was full witness to the first crack of the egg, and the first dragon to be spilled across the hatching grounds. And well even he could tell that was a stroke of the golds luck. It was a large and healthy looking dragon no doubt about that. And from what he heard around him the fact the little blighter was a bronze was even better. The only way it could have been a more positive start would have been if the queen had hatched first. And that was so rare no one really expected that.
Still as the little dragon made its way towards the boys then started pushing its way through, Zal felt his heart rate increase in excitement and anticipation that surprised him. But he didn't feel much disappointment when the bronze found his in the stands. Maybe because he was still unsure if he was even right for a dragon or if his father had arranged it somehow or the serch rider had just made a mistake. Only time would tell as his eyes flickered back to the green that was now eyeing the boys.
This hatching had all the excitement to it that other hatching had - at least according to the whispers he'd caught along the way to the sand's, but there was an undercurrent of bittersweet that he couldn't help but feel as well. That the first hatchling was a wonderful looking bronze did much to lift his spirits and he held his breath as the creature stared him down - Devlin wasn't sure if it was a good stare or a bad one but when he pushed past to find someone in the stands Devlin couldn't help but sigh slightly. It was good luck for the weyr though if he understood things right and surely a good sign for the rest of the hatching.
Keeping his eye on the green that was still wandering about Devlin, smiled at the little creature as it searched.
Cheryth had been hard hit with the death of her fellow crimson and Ca'mil had spent the last few days trying to sooth her. It seemed the red dragon had been quite proud of her brethren achievement and to have it end in disaster was quite sad - Ca'mil was hoping the hatching might bring her around a bit more - and so far she did indeed seem caught up in the excitement of it all, crooning encouragement along with all the other dragons.
Here was hoping none of the present Benden's did anything stupid during the whole process - hatching was a delicate and treasured time.
Salin, still feeling like his head was spinning from the speed at which the entire day had changed, gawped in amazement at the hatching of the impressive, and handsome bronze. It was an impressive start, and hopefully a goodstart, to the hatching of the double clutch, in spite of the terrible death they'd experienced not too long before. He was almost too elated, and too surprised, to feel shock and jealousy as the gorgeous bronze marched it's way past the candidates, and into the stands, focusing on a familiar young trader.
He thought in surprise, blinking in amazement, but turned his head back to check on the green, still searching, though superstitiously he felt the good omen of the bronze was maybe a little tainted now. The green was searching the boys, a slight surprise, but it could have been considerably stranger, and he wondered who she would find.
-----
Saekagi was pulling on his hair again, a familiar gesture for the few that he'd met here, and watching the eggs and the hatchlings with nervous awe, more as though he expected to have to dive out of the path of a charging dragon than to impress.
The decisiveness of the Bronze, in the wake of so much chaos, he figured was probably good, and he was pleased for the boy in the stands. That must have been an unexpected surprise. Come to the hatching, cheer for the hatchlings, impress a dragon, amaze your friends. He fought a faint smile at the thought, since it hardly seemed the time. Too many emotions were still raw, with the death of the Crimson and her rider.
And here it began. The robes felt strange but at least some diligent person had cut them to the right length for him... The sands were hotter than they had been at the Touching but at least it didn't all come as a total shock.
A gasp seemed to run through the sands as the queen's egg began to move, but she was not to be first; the fresh dirt egg tipped forward, and then a bronze smashed out...
Honestly, he was a little bit ugly.
Oh he was beautifully coloured and everything but he was awkward looking and dripping with egg goo. Still, he was a lot better looking than a human child; dragonets probably just took getting used to. While the bronze stood undecided, a green hatched out too, and she shared her bother's cute/ugly charm... Ah, and then the bronze choose. He had been told that bronzes hatching and choosing first was good luck, but he wasn't sure why...
Maybe because tradition said they were the 'best' kind of dragon, save of course for golds. If they were considered the best then he could see how people would want them to get first pick, while the other colours could take what they didn't want. At least he hadn't had his hopes up for this one; even before he'd come here he'd been aware that bronzes didn't go for men who liked men. There was that green on the sands, though, and Kyros turned his head to regard the shy looking creature; he hoped she hadn't wanted the same person.
As the dragons began to hum, Tor had ordered his little faire to stay in his quarters before feeling his way outside. Xan was going to pick him up. Xan always picked him up. She would be-
"Hey, music boy, let's go!"
Tor started as he heard the soft thump of Opeth touching down beside him, but recovered quickly and held his hand up to where he thought Xan might be. Apparently he was close enough; his rider friend grabbed him around the wrist and hauled him up behind her.
"Okay, we're in the hatching grounds, Opeth is dropping us off... Okay? Right, good, we're in the rider stands right now so we need to hop down a level. Sit down and lower yourself off the edge; I'm down now, I'll help... Right, okay, good, we're set. Just in time looks like; the queen egg is moving already!"
Tor nodded, pressing up against his friend as if being closer would somehow make the information she was giving him richer. He felt guilty about dragging her down from her rightful place as a rider to watch with common folk, but he needed her, and she swore she didn't mind.
"Hu, the gold egg has stopped moving for now but the big one next to it is moving and - hey! That's a pretty big bronze! He's richly coloured, pretty dark, and-"
Enjoy the show.
Tor gasped softly in shock at hearing the dragon's voice, and a moment later his grip on Xan's hand tightened. "I see him!"
"...Y'what?"
"I see him! Tereth is showing me!" It was the most incredible thing he had ever seen with any pair of eyes. The hatchling was magnificent, large, well proportioned, strikingly coloured. Tor watched as he moved among the candidates, and then over to the stands to choose his.
The moment of Impression.
He had no words.
*****
"You are thinking accusingly at me," Opeth grumbled to Xan, "it is not my fault I dislike speaking to humans other than you. As for letting one use my eyes... Not a chance."
"Fine." Xan clasped Tor's hand tightly, mostly because if she didn't the force of his grip would have been crushing her. "Just do me a favour, and tell Tereth I'm going to get him a really, really tasty herbeast or something; whatever animal he likes best, I'll get him one."
"Fine," Opeth grumbled to His, before turning his mind to the brown in question. "Tereth. Mine says she is buying you a nice animal for letting her friend watch the Hatching... She is more grateful than she can describe, and the Harper will be too, once he can think of more than dragonets."
Another day, another hatching. F'itz watched thoughtfully as the bronze hatched and chose its rider; it was the biggest he'd seen in a while, and very healthy looking. Whatever else you might say of Trine, you couldn't deny that they were producing good dragons.
"For how long? The sickness of no-golds will spread, we may have brought it here ourselves... And then the only dragons born who can breed will be their reds... Red births red, silver, black, brown, blue, green, and white. With their children, Pern could still fight, yet so seldom they clutch... Maybe as the golds dies, the reds will flourish? Or maybe they will find a cure. Maybe so."
"Maybe you're right," F'itz shrugged internally, "but they call their red dragons crimsons, for some reason."
"I know," Brumath replied, "but to make it sound prettier, they would call a s**t-shovel a shining-headed wooden-shafted scooping device. A blue is not an azure, why should a red be a crimson? They just pretty it us to praise the odd female for occasionally laying, if they dedicate their lives to it."
F'itz repressed a snort of amusement at his dragon's rare moment of humor. "Perhaps you're right... I wonder if that green is going to move anytime soon?"
"We shall watch, and we shall see... I wonder if anything out of the usual will happen here today. Where are our healers? What do they do?"
"No idea," F'itz replied, "but I think we need to be ready for anything, just in case."
"Yes Mine. I will be ready."
Huh? Where's he going? Gabriel wondered as she watched the bronze force his way past the group of boys. She nearly laughed when she realized that he was climbing into the stands. Haha, awesome! The teen almost wanted to cheer aloud. She felt bad for the boys of the Sands (some of which looked rather hurt by the turn of events), but the fact that dragons really could choose anyone pleased her immensely. It made things all the more surprising and unpredictable really. She turned her attention from the bronze back onto the green who was eying the boys. Who would she choose?
-------------------------------------
"Well that was certainly unexpected," S'ren remarked with a smile as he watched the newly Impressed pair in the stands. Yes, this was going to be an interesting Hatching for sure no doubt.
Tereth rumbled in amusement at Opeth's words. Do tell her there is no need for such a thing. The harper's excitement is gift enough. He often frequented the harpers to enjoy their music after all, so it felt nice to be able to give something back to at least one of them. Plus this was a special occasion that was not to be missed.
Farellen was only half listening since the death of the Crimson he'd not been his usual perky self, he only halfheartedly went about his tasks but it was a general thing, alot of other people were the same, suddenly Zevra burst into the air, bringing with him a blast of freezing cold, his eyes were whirling and he was humming. It took Farellen a while to realise just why the little silver was humming, his realisation came just as the candidatemaster bellowed something about the eggs hatching. Farellen raced to the barracks, donned his Candidate robes and made it to the sands in time to see the Gold egg shaking as if to hatch, but then the great huge Bronze emerged from his shattered eggshells.
Farellen managed to get in line just in time for the Bronze to shove past them all, watching the big Bronze's progress he managed to miss the little Green hatching, his eyes were on the person who'd Impressed the Bronze, to his surprise it was the trader he'd spoken to before, silently he congratulated the man, then turned his attention back in front of him...to see the Green heading away from the girls, and towards the boys.
Saykiro watched as the bronze moved past all the boys, heading towards the stands. Good he found His.
He turned back in time to watch the Green work her way into the the boys line. He made sure to stand a little further back, not wanting to get in her way. His mind half on the Hatching, half on the death of the Crimson and rider. Even if he doesn't Impress this time, Saykiro will be happy for his fellows.
"I have told her," Opeth replied to the larger dragon, "but she says she will do it anyway, because she feels like it... Or if you prefer, she will get something nice for Yours. Either way, she wants to do something nice; it's probably better for your sanity just to let her, she is stupid and stubborn."
"Love you too, Opeth," grinned Xan, who had been party to her partner's words as well. "I'll get something nice for you too," she added, "just so's you don't feel left out, and to thank you for not actually starting a sight with any of the Benden lot."
"Humph," the blue replied, "that was not for you. No matter how I hate them, the satisfaction of shredding them all is not worth disgracing my wing... Well, a lot of people would be pleased actually, but the weyrwoman would have to say she was not even if she secretly was. For that reason alone, my claws stay sheathed; your feelings do not matter to me."
"Of course they don't Opeth." Xan grinned, glancing up at her lifemate briefly and stuck her tongue out at him.
"Egh. Why did I choose you again?"
At least this hatching wasn't in the middle of the night. Jalarant was startled from his usual duties of helping in the kitchen (The man bore the jobs with some grace, though he disliked it and wasn't the best at it.). He, as many others, had taken the humming at first to be nothing of importance. But when the bronzes joined in...
He was swearing at himself; he was the biggest sharding idiot that the Weyr had ever had the misfortune to let in! He dashed to his sleeping area, for once not being self-conscious about changing around anyone who may be there. He was breathing heavily by the time he stumbled onto the sands. He wasn't the first there, but hopefully he wouldn't be the last.
Jalarant at least arrived in time to see the first egg crack. A bronze! Now That was a lucky little boost in morale for the Weyr! Such a nice sized specimen, as well. That boded well for the rest of the clutch, didn't it?
As the Bronze went back towards the stands, Jalarant suppressed a gasp as a Green walked the line. She was a beautiful little one, wasn't she? He loved seeing Hatchlings up close...
