For Staravia, the second part of it's name comes from 'Avian", or bird-like. :3
Oooh, and for Salamence, I think the second part of his name is from 'immense', cuz he's so big.
edit: Well, looking at Salamence's Pokedex entry, maybe not. XP How is it possible that I'm taller than a dragon?! What's with these dragon-like Pokemon being so short?! Craziness. DX Unless they're measured at the shoulder like dogs... That'd be a more dragon-ish height.

'Avian' makes sense I'll be sure to add that. And 'immense' makes more sense the 'commence' so I'll change that too. In fact 'menacing' (as in scary) can work also. If you have anymore ideas please do share!
