Raphael was deep in his own reflections by the time Sparkles had finished eating, but he wasn't so far gone that he missed the obvious signs that she was ready to take off again. He'd have to have been both blind and deaf to miss the stretching, the sighing, and the purposeful stride right past him...and dense to miss the lack of comment as she started off. He wasn't sure if it was a deliberate point she was trying to make, a natural result of being full, or merely a silent commentary on what she thought of his conversation skills. Either way, he wasn't going to make an issue out of it; his thoughts were enough to keep him company for now, he wasn't going to try and force communication from her.

So while he started out after her with a deliberate stride of his own, he remained silent as well, thinking about what he would do in the even that it WAS Elizabeth, in the event that it WASN'T Elizabeth, what he would do if he ran into trouble, and what he would need to do after this was all over.

What he remained unaware of, whether for better or worse, was Sparkles' plan for getting him his introduction. Somehow, a cross-mountain bellow had never crossed his mind, and likely never would. Well, there was a first time for everything...

She was full - that's what it all boiled down to. With her hunger satiated and the cool mountain air, the mare felt refreshed and as a consequence, felt the need to shoo all the tension from her limbs. A stretch here and there was inevitable when it came down to that but no one could fault Raphael for his uncertainty. After all, their encounter hadn't been the most pleasant of experiences up until now and any normal male probably would have wondered the same thing.

Nevertheless she probably would have questioned his social skills if she had been any other mare than herself. She'd been around talkative stallions, quiet stallions, indifferent stallions, quirky stallions - he just fell into the category she liked to regard as 'socially awkward'. Fortunately for Raphael the naive could be afforded the 'socially awkward' title without being looked down upon - they had potential to grow and develop and eventually, would graduate to another category.

...She'd peg money on him being one of those 'gentlemen' types, one who aspired to be considerate and approachable. However, with that meddling bird constantly snivelling down his neck he'd probably never have access to the 'approachable' aspect of said category.

It was a little sad.

Aware that he was following her again, Sparkles left Raphael to his own thoughts and puttered along leisurely at her own pace. Weaving here and there to find her more favoured route, the method she used to ascend the slope on foot was surprisingly efficient and eventually she located her 'perch'. Located just a few feet away from the edge of one of the lower lying cliffs, she had discovered quite a few years ago that it was fantastic for projecting her voice.

Consequently she opened her mouth, sucked in a breath and then without further warning gave a holler.

"HELLOOOOOOOO!"

A perfect introduction in her books, maybe a little bit abrupt for his.

Good lord, what was she doing??

Raphael might have made up his mind to be accommodating and respectful to Sparkles, but it was one thing to have a thought and another thing entirely to be presented with a yell loud enough to shake the trees! Eyes wide with shock, he regarded Sparkles as though she were a madwoman for a long few moments. "Well...that's certainly a direct way to get someone's attention, isn't it?" His voice was a bit weak, but considering the circumstances he was pretty pleased he'd managed that much. Imagine, yelling a greeting into a land where you liable to be attacked upon entry! Though perhaps that warning was the best way to prevent them from being attacked?

Well, at any rate, the end result ought to justify the means? "Thank you, Sparkles."

"It's the only way to get attention," Sparkles correctly in her most patient tone. Her brow lifted a little and she shook her head, "Short of setting the trees on fire that is, and I really don't think that would be as well received," she continued. She had a valid point in this, it was one thing to yell at the top of your lungs but an entirely different matter when you chose to burn down valuable resources. At least in this manner they knew you were there, could seek out the source of the sound and respond to it - it was a damn sight less awkward than being pulled over by a disgruntled guard.

...Some of them could be quite grumpy (especially in the morning).

Nevertheless one might have said that the 'damage' had been done and there was no turning back. Her voice rang out across the slopes, bouncing from cliff to cliff in a manner that ensured it carried quite the distance. In no time at all at least one individual would take note of it and come to investigate...whether said individual was winged or not remained to be seen, if they weren't, then they could be waiting here for quite some time. Fortunately this question was answered reasonably quickly and by a winged being which really shouldn't have come at a major surprise - however, if they'd anticipated that it would be a soquili they were in for a shock. Instead, the 'scout' that came to investigate was a magpie and she looked just a touch amused.

"Hello to you too," she replied softly. "Might I ask what all the fuss is about?"

"Oh, sure -" Sparkles flicked her tail towards Raphael as if to point towards him. "He wants to ask a few questions," she explained, causing the bird to flick it's gaze towards the stallion expectantly.

One thing that Raphael could say about Sparkles: she certainly knew how to get her point across. Her response was straightforward and to the point, although accompanied by a comparison so odd that he didn't know how to respond and just kept his mouth shut. Burning down the forest seemed like an incredibly excessive way to get someone's attention, and he half-suspected that she was just messing with him by offering that as a a possibility. After all, it would be a highly dangerous and careless thing to do, to say nothing of destructive and wasteful. How many creatures lived in the forest, after all, and how many more used it as a resource of some kind?

So he stayed silent, listening to the echo and waiting for the...sentry?

He hadn't been expecting a magpie. Hadn't been expecting a familiar at all, actually, but in retrospect it made a great deal of sense. After all, magpies and other bird familiars combined small size with speed, mobility, and the power of Speech; it was a quite practical arrangement, in that respect. He'd likely been expecting a large, burly Soquili on the basis of Sparkles' story!

By the time Sparkles had referred the bird to him, he was composed and ready with his questions, giving the magpie a courteous bow and a pleasant "Good day" before launching into his questions. This could be the moment of truth...

"Yes, I was curious if you have seen a tan unicorn mare with a curly light brown mane and tail in these parts at all recently; her name is Elizabeth Swann, and she would be slightly on the smaller side and be wearing a pearl necklace." Hardly the most dramatic of descriptions, and unfortunately not the most unique based on appearance alone; still, there weren't many that sported Elizabeth's neckwear, so one never knew!

The question was, what answer was he looking for?

Pearls? Check.

Unicorn? Check.

Curly, light brown mane and tail? Check.

All three of the features described were easily recognisable to the mare and even if he hadn't given her name, the magpie would have taken an educated guess as to who the individual was. Alas, when he said the name 'Elizabeth Swann' the avian's eyebrow arched rather precariously. They had had a recent addition to the herd and within the last few weeks she had settled midway up the peak. She had been the talk of one particularly family for a short while as well, a source of gossip and curiosity based on the unusual circumstances in which she had arrived.

"We do have a mare by that name and description," the magpie replied slowly and shook her head. Nearby, Sparkles looked relatively satisfied with her hazarded guess from the morning had proven to be accurate. "She is the consort to one of the heirs of the herds that live on the peaks," she continued. Tilting her head to the side, she regarded the stallion with considerable curiosity before she continued. After all it was her duty to assess the threat an individual posed, to be honest he didn't seem that imposing at all, but it was not a question she had expected.

"Might I ask why you make such a query?"

Raphael had never been a dedicated observer of body language or expression, but even if he'd been half-blind he would have had to take note of the dramatic arching of the magpie's eyebrow (an idiosyncratic trait, indeed, that he'd never been aware that birds possessed!). In his experience, that typically meant some sort of surprise or disbelief, and in the context of the current conversation he could only take it to mean surprise at a coincidence...a fact that was almost immediately borne out by the magpie's admission.

Well then, color him surprised. He hadn't expected it originally when Sparkles had told him of the rumor that a mare matching Elizabeth's name had come to the slopes as the lifemate of one of the residents, but in the time that had since passed he had had time to process the idea to the point that his reaction to the magpie was a mere nod, rather than the round eyed, opened mouth look of astonishment Sparkles had gotten. He had had time to adjust, confirmation was merely a slight mental jostle rather than an unexpected slap.

So Elizabeth was mated, then, and had moved away without a word! It was so strange and very unlike her to do such a thing (or any of the three things) that Raphael was glad that he was the one who had found her, and that it was he alone. Undoubtedly his father would be surprised and concerned both, whereas Raphael himself...

Well, he was both as well, if he were being honest, but he had always held his godmother in the highest of respect. Whatever was going on, he was sure she had her reasons, and she would certainly share them when he saw her! And see her, he would certainly be doing.

Looking squarely at the magpie, he answered her question with an equally straightforward reply. "Elizabeth is a dear friend of my family, and we have been concerned for her welfare, as she rather precipitously vanished from her home of many, many years. I have been looking for her so that I might make sure she is safe and well, and while I am glad to hear that she is here, I would very much like to see her, if you would be so kind as to either take or direct me to her."

Short, sweet and to the point.

It was evident by the gleen in the magpie's eyes that she appreciated the straightforwardness of his reply. He hadn't minced words and he had stated his reasons for his presence in the territory. This made her job significantly easier as a scout and also quashed any concern that he might be there for hostile reasons. Given the explanation he had provided, the magpie could appreciate that he even had a valid reason for being here, though given the size of the Kawani she was very impressed that he'd even stumbled on the right location.

...Or at that been the pink mare's doing?

The magpie had been largely uninterested in conversing with Sparkles as she already knew the identity of the mare. However, she had been the one to summon the scout and as a consequence, must have had an inkling that she was in the right spot. Ah but of course, Sparkles could have been a secret agent given the nature and sheer number of her contacts. Gamble or not, it had paid off though and Elizabeth had almost been found - the final hurdle the stallion had to leap over was yet to come.

"Well I can confirm that she is in good health if that is your concern," the magpie stated mildly before shaking its head. "However if you are in need of an audience with her, then you will need to go that way," she continued. Unfurling her wing, she pointed her flight feathers towards an outcropping of rock that rested nearby the forest edge - not too high up the slopes, but not too far down either. "She resides there unless she and her mate have since elected to adopt a new home elsewhere but I have received no reports about this..."

While the scout's confirmation with regards to Elizabeth's continued good health was reassuring, Raphael hadn't come this far to merely take someone else's word of mouth as the facts and return home. To be sure, he had no reason to distrust the magpie and, being the trusting soul he was, did believe her to be entirely truthful; however, he would have to actually chat with the mare himself, hear and see with his own ears and eyes, before being completely satisfied. That in mind, it was extremely pleasing that the scout was so accommodating as to indicate where he needed to go...although a little bit surprising and disconcerting at the same time to find his destination so close! For a moment, he wondered if Sparkles had been aware of that fact, but quickly dismissed the thought as uncharitable.

Instead, he gave the magpie another slight bow. "I appreciate the information and the directions; I would very much like to call on her, though. As a stranger, will I require an escort, or would it be permissible for me to proceed on my own? You have both been very kind and helpful," This as he turned to include Sparkles in the conversation, "But if it would be acceptable, I'd like to speak to Elizabeth alone."

Well, at least without an additional audience; for all he knew, if Elizabeth was there then her mate might be there as well! Obviously if such was the case, he would have an excellent opportunity to meet the fellow, if not...well, if not he'd be able to speak to Lizzy herself, and that was what he was really in need of!

Sparkles had no intention of remaining in this immediate vicinity, nor had she any intention of accompanying Raph any further. She had offered to get him to a place where he could gain information but she’d never made any promises to take him the whole way. It would have proven impossible for her anyway as she only had limited knowledge of who lived where in these parts. The only information she knew for certain was that Ashura lived in one particular location and that was where she was headed!

...Frankly she had no need to know about anyone else. Well, she didn’t need to know about any of them in major detail at least. She knew of their names and roughly what they looked like but beyond this, she was clueless.

“Oh well don’t mind me,” she replied smoothly and rolled her shoulders in a loose shrug, “I promised my friend I would visit her for lunch today,” she pointed out merrily and backed away. With herself comfortably dismissed, she gathered her bearings, glanced from left to right and then selected the most appropriate route to follow. Once she was on the recognisable and very beaten path she’d know exactly where to go from here. “Have a pleasant reunion!” she added before trotting off, leaving Raph in the care of the magpie.

Thankfully, the magpie was not one for small talk.

“You are of no threat to these lands if immediate observations are anything to go by,” she said calmly and nodded once more in the direction he needed to head. “You will require no escort, I will pass on the message that there is a visitor in our midst,” she continued. “I hope you have a most pleasant reunion with the one you seek,” she finished.

And so it was settled. With great cordiality, Raphael bowed first to Sparkles, giving her a lower and more formal bow. "I am very appreciative of your assistance, Sparkles; hopefully if we are to meet again, it will be with a more pleasant beginning."

Having settled on that score, he turned and bowed as well to the magpie. "My great appreciation for your assistance, Magpie; I assure you that I shall be on my best behavior for the duration of my visit, and be sure to see myself out the way that I've come." That addressed, he swept back his braids, nodded to the magpie, and started purposefully off towards the outcropping.
