Emerson Valentine

"If I don't see it, what's keeping me from being a liar? I don't really know you, Core, and I don't know if I can trust you. You know, you could've just shown it to me a thousand times over during the time we've been talking."

Emerson was smiling gently, hiding his true feelings behind the flashing of lovely teeth. He was almost certain now that Core didn't have a tongue; that didn't necessarily mean she was an Ellen Jamesisan but that definitely meant something had happened to her in laugh. After all, people weren't just born without tongues...were they? He made a mental note to ask Amelia about it when he saw her again.

"Oh! And Amelia says to thank you for that folder you gave us. She says it was a big help. I wouldn't know; my only job is to type everything up. Amelia dictates, and I type."

Another lie, but one with good meaning. Does that mean it's an okay lie? Emerson just didn't know. He felt a sudden itching for his heroin; he needed to be done with this conversation and needed it to be done now. It would take long enough to find Amelia (who had their stash stored away in her dorm) and to get it prepped. Emerson scratched at the inside of his arm, waiting for Core's written reply.

Core stared at him with a less than pleased look on her face. Her arms were crossed over her chest while her legs were some feet apart, the right foot tapping. It was true that she could stuck out her tongue like a little baby and move on from him. The possible reasons for her continued presence were not helping at this point. She looked him over. He seemed normal enough except for that persistent scratching that his hand was doing.

"I don't appreciate your little game. Tell your sister that it was not a problem and she can drop it off in the library. I'll pick it up there. Goodbye," her pen told him. Core turned away from him to finish the short journey but looked at him after a few steps. "By the way, get off whatever it is you're using." The last sentence was spoken through her mouth but whispered all the same. She gave him a brief smile as if they were friends and strode off in the opposite direction. It was not her business but people told so much about themselve through body language that she could not help it sometimes.

Emerson Valentine

Emerson dropped his hand from his forearm, not amused at Core's intuition in the slightest; he straightened up the long sleeve of his Blazer. Mud kept him going through the day, kept his life bearable. Nothing felt sweeter to him then the H singing through his veins. But hey, he didn't have to explain himself to this girl; hell, he didn't even explain himself to Amelia most of the time. He forced himself to give Core another nonchalant, vaguely happy smile and called after her.

"So you have a pretty name and a pretty voice? I never would have suspected. Why don't you ever use it?"

Emerson didn't expect a reply honestly, but it was worth a shot. Amelia would keep and so would their Mud; if he was tweaking, so would she. He adjusted the strap on his backpack so it wasn't digging into his shoulder so. When Core glanced back, he gave her a little wave and turned away, meaning to go back into the Commons to meet his twin. He stopped and turned back.

"Say, Core, why don't you come with me? I'm sure Amelia would love to takl to you again."

Invictus Draconius Kalsidius VI
(Draco)

Draco had let the class onto the stage and the class had gone by well. Afterward while people were chatting and locking up Draco had apologized to Miss Islington. She was icy about it and told him not to come over for about a week. So now Valentine was a c**k block. Oh well. Draco grabbed his personal bass, one of the ten Stand-ups and his Chrome bag and caught up to the block in question.

"So Strad uh, I took you for a JT Lamy kinda girl. Oh well, just one more thing in common, though if I'm right yours is a copy. I have an original Strad, if you want it?" It was sitting in a case in his room. He had played it twice and then just took it out to keep if clean and tuned. His personal bass was a corvette and what no one knew was the upright he took after class everyday was his as well. An original five string Kiler.

"So then..." Draco's eyes fell to her arm. She was rubbing the hollow at her elbow. Well, well. She was doing it unconsciously and he chuckled.

"How much you paying for your H?" Draco could get it for half what they were paying. Draco got it straight from a harvester and he refined it himself in one of the abandoned sheds.

Amelia Valentine

Amelia gave Draco a dirty look for even suggesting such a thing; the maker's mark on it put her violin at about 1703, or so. It would be too hard to fake. With the same love and care as she'd show before, Amelia wiped down her violin with a soft rag. She put it back into the case (oh so carefully) and locked the case up; instead of putting the Strad back into the band room, she too it with her grabbing up her back pack as well. Amelia walked as she talked, ignoring Draco's (insane or perhaps inane) offer of giving her his Strad. If he's giving it to me, it's a fake, for sure. No one would just do that. No one.

"It's not a copy."

She dropped her hand, suddenly conscious of what she was doing. Amelia knew it was pointless to argue with Draco; the cat was out of the back, the milk long from the pitcher and the wench was pregnant. But it didn't matter much, if she told him; Everyone was tweaking with one mind altering drug, or another. For most, it was the biweekly marijuana hits and the occasional LSD soaked paper. For others, they liked their biweekly hard hits: K, Mud, Snow, and of course, Speed. She shrugged.

"A little less then street."

"How bout half that. I refine it myself after buying it direct overseas. I make three times the profit of a street dealer, and its pretty easy to refine." Draco would have never thought he would talk about slinging Mud to such a prissy girl. Eh everyone did something. Draco didn't shoot his own money maker. Not at all. Draco did something a little more dangerous and lot easier to hide. In fact. As they walked down the hall he shifted around so his right hand was free brought up a ring on his right hand and with a click it slid over a little, a small catch there. With quick breath in and wipe, the compartment was closed and the drug was in effect.

"Really you should drop that s**t, but if you aren't just give me a call. You have my card. I'll even cut the price down, quarter what you pay on the street and I'll throw in the sixteen ninety nine original Strad for free. I don't need it and it is a hassle to keep clean." Draco grinned hugely as looked over at her.

Amelia Valentine

"No, thank you."

Amelia thought about it; honestly she did. She and Emerson had an expensive habit and she wanted a car. Their allowance would only go so far, and she thought she'd give Daddy a heart attack if she told him why they needed a raise. Amelia shook her head. Too risky. She wasn't an addict, or anything. She just thought it had a real nice taste. Amelia shook her head again when he mentioned the 1699 Strad; it was enough to startle her into speaking more then five syllables at a time.

"A sixteen...that's...that's worth a fortune. Many fortunes. How the hell..."

Amelia trailed off, finding now more words; she flushed slightly when she'd realized that she'd cursed. She did not like having a potty mouth especially and normally only used it around Emerson. Cursing? In front of him? Silly. It's got to be a fake; that's the only way he'd mention something like that. So off hand, like its a high school hand out. She shuddered to think that for a minute, she'd considered it being real. How would he even get his hands on something like that? He doesn't play and his daddy can't be earning enough to afford one. Especially if its from the seventeen hundreds.

"Sorry. Listen, I'm supposed to be meeting Em right now, but if you want to tag along?..."

Amelia made sure she kept her tone neutral; it wouldn't do to possibly make her back-up mud dealer pissed off. Who knows what he might cut the heroin with? That would be bad.

I'm sure she would. Core looked at the boy from across the bit of distance between them. She was free of classes of the day. Two more projects needed her assistance but their deadline was too far for much consideration right now. However, that never gave her enough reason to hang out with people, especially when she had not been to the main library in twenty-four hours straight. Dane, her personal stalker but friend, would be looking for her as well since their classes finished around the same time for every other day. Her notebook told the jock in front of her that she would not be able to make it. Maybe another time but currently, there was too much work to be done.

With that written, the girl moved away in her signature brisk moves and sped towards the library as fast as she could. Upon entrance, she dropped off her bag, handed in her ID as usual and made a smooth beeline for a brownhaired boy by the fartherest long table on the left side of the vast room. She loved this place for the pristine calm and quiet as well as the unimaginable array of books under every topic known to man. It was that mind blowing for her and Dane as well. He was the only person that she actually cared enough to speak with, whether in public or private.

"Hey Dane, what homework do you have today? Did you sort things out with that teacher last period?" Core slipped into a standard plastic chair across the table from him and flooded the arm space with textbooks and notebooks for her Creative Arts course. As much as her brain belonged to academia, so did her heart to the Fine Arts and some crafts. Luckily, she was able to pursue both here at SCS, the great school that it is. "Oh and guess who tried to talk to me today, Emerson Valentine, poster child for sports."

Draco shrugged his shoulders as he noticed her skepticism over his violin. He chuckled at her apparent edginess.

"You don't believe I have a Sixteen ninety nine Strad. I'm so hurt. Hits hard here." Draco held his hand over his heart chuckling. He ran his hand through his hair quickly and settled down.

"I'll show it to you sometime. It has his mark and everything. Dad found it at his grandfather's manor a few years back. Documents of the auction says its authentic. Just saying." What she probably couldn't wrap her head around was why he would give it away. Easy he didn't want the damned thing. It linked him to his father.

User ImageGenerally, Dane could be found in a substantially larger group of friends on the quad but since the beginning of his second year, the boy had been squeezing himself into Core's life bit by bit till they formed an unofficial schedule. Now, he shrugged off the headphones of his ever present disc player to pay attention to the girl on the other side of his table with a customary grin between friends.

"Hey yourself, each of my teachers decided to be generous today. As for Ms. Tony, I think I should give it more time for the sake of my survival. You know how she is," he said, poking through her supplies nonchalantly. "Anyway, what is this stuff for? I thought that you had finished your projects already for the semester. This is not like you, Cornetta." He loved to test the waters by calling her that but it was all for fun, especially the standard scolding which he received every time. When he had seen everything, his headphones returned to their usual place but the volume decreased dramatically so that he could still hear her response if she bothered with answering him at all. There was always that chance and he would have left it at that if her last statement had not sneak up on him. Did she even care about the rumors that could arise from that? "I suppose that you gave him the cold shoulder then, poor guy." He smiled at her briefly and tried even harder to focus on his work. Core was observant of most things but not the things that really mattered in this life.

Amelia Valentine

"Right, sure, whatever. Look, are you coming, or what?"

Irritation had caused Amelia's normally reclusive tongue to loose up significantly. She was practically bouncing in place; her violin case was knocking against her thigh. It would protect her precious instrument sufficiently; Amelia had saved up for quite sometime in order to afford it. She actually found herself thinking that she'd like to see this supposed 1699 Strad, if not to just expose Draco for the lying, conniving b*****d that he was.

Meanwhile, Emerson was leaning against a pillar in the inner Commons, waiting impatiently. Amelia had this month's stashed stored away in her Dorm; a place where he couldn't access, despite the fact that they were closer then the average siblings, being the same soul, split into two bodies. Male was male, and female was female. Imbeciles...Come on, Amelia, where are you? The thought didn't even occur to Emerson that Amelia might be chatting up a cute bloke. Amelia and Emerson both knew that Amelia and blokes were not to mix. Ever. He...did not like the idea of his sweet, delicate sister dating. Too many people that can take advantage of her, and I can't spend all of my life looking out for her.

Draco walked with her, he noticed she still seemed skeptical about the Violin.

"If you don't believe me I'll just have to show it to you. And no thanks. I have to go catch up on my Russian, falling behind and I don't want to lose to your brother." Russian, Russian History, and Advanced Computer Programing using Binary was his only other classes besides four other band periods. Draco basically lived with in three feet of the Preforming Arts Center.

"Give me a call when you want that deal, oh and I'll bring that Violin to class tomorrow. Just for you Valentine." Draco chuckled as he headed for the Library to catch up on his Russian, but he also needed to research a project for his Programing course. As he left he blew a kiss towards her laughing lightly.

Amelia

Amelia couldn't resist; she gave Draco a parting shot. She could've told Draco it was useless, that they'd grown up with Russian, that their favorite childhood game was Russian Scrabble and that Emerson invariably beat Amelia.

"Don't you mean 'mne nuzhna praktikovat’sa v Russkam,' Draco? Udachi."

You're going to need it. Amelia gave Draco a little wave; it turned into a socially unacceptable finger motion when she saw him blow a kiss at her. Amelia spun on her heel and hurried off. A few minutes later and Emerson was shrugging himself off of the pillar, smiling gently.

"You're late."

"Says who?"

"The only person who's opinion matters to you."

"The pope?"

They shared a laugh and Amelia's free hand slipped down to lace through Emerson's. She led him out and away from the Commons, towards the girl's dorm wing. Amelia had to leave Emerson though, when they reached the wing. She skipped up to her tiny dorm room and dropped her stuff off; on one of the two beds, her room mate, Sara was asleep. Sara did love her cat naps; it killed her grades, but should wouldn't stop. Amelia dropped down to the floor and pulled a small box out from under the bed. In it, there was everything the two twins would need to free base. She tucked the box into the palm of her hand, and rejoined Emerson down the stairs. They walked in silence to the library; it was their customary spot.

The Lainhart Library was the ugliest building on campus, constructed with a musician's donated funds in the eighties, when apparently people thought that a round building tilted at a weird angle was just the thing to update all the grand old brick edifices surround it. But as ugly as it was on the outside, the inside was couch-filled and comfortable. Bookshelves fanned out from a central parlor with lots of seating and a massive globe that seniors always try to steal. However, the interior was not what interested the two twins this fine afternoon, but the "lover nooks" around to the rear. That is, those small, out of the way alcoves that the teachers didn't patrol around regularly enough to pose a threat to the users of the nook.

They found one such nook (empty) and claimed it as their own. Amelia sat down against the hard wall of the library, smoothing down the back of her skirt modestly. She opened the box, pulling out a soft, tightly rolled cotton tee-shirt. Amelia unrolled it against the ground, spreading its contents out for Emerson's greedy eyes: a pair of syringes, and antique and tarnished silver spoon, a pair of flesh-toned hose and sever press-and-seal baggies containing the white powder. Unlike most girls, Amelia actually liked needles; she liked the way the steel felt in her skin. Carefully, Amelia took one of the baggies and pinched a little onto the spoon; without looking away, she held her hand out for Emerson's lighter.

"Your lighter?"

They both smoked, but Amelia hardly ever carried hers on her person; what was the point when she always had one with her, in Emerson's pocket? She cooked the mud until it began to bubble on the spoon, holding the tiny flame under it evenly. When it was ready, she took first one then the other syringe, filling them up equally with the prepared drug. Amelia handed one off to Emerson and kept the other for herself. She tapped away the bubbles from the top, pushing them out with a tiny squirt of the precious liquid. She tied her upper arm off with the pantyhose (Emerson was using his school belt) and inserted the tip slowly into her Cephalic vein; she pushed the plunger down, until it was flush and gave a little sigh of sheer pleasure fifteen seconds later as the narcotics hit her system.

Draco sidled into the library quietly, no one looked up and no one cared, they were studying quietly, except for two. He noticed the odd, quiet girl that his rival had been talking to earlier. She was sitting next to a guy he had seen around, but never talked to, his head phones peaked his interest. Draco walked through the racks, found the book he had been looking for and then sat heavily in a chair across from Core. He pulled out his Russian book and the homework he was actually struggling through.

'What you listening to.' Draco wrote it onto a piece of paper mimicking Core's odd form of communication and sliding to her friend.

In reality, Core was not listening to him as well as a friend should have but he had not behaved in any extraordinary manner so the general meaning of his words managed to get through to her. The girl flipped through the pages of one text about knots and the different types of rope. It was times like these that she wished that she had allowed herself the chance to participate in extracurricular activities while growing up but what was done, is done and it could not be changed. Her hands began making notes, the ideas for her end-of-term already seizing her mind. That had to be the reason for her inability to sense Draco just at that moment. Her eyes picked up on the piece of paper quickly and so, she intercepted it before Dane could even react to being at the same table with the famous Draco, a senior.

Her pen told him the answer. "He's listening to what he always listens. That is jazz, weird kid that he is. Why are you here?" She shoved it impatiently back at him while ignoring Dane's gawking facial expression.

"I would have answered him," the fifteen-year-old retorted quietly, keeping in mind where they were currently.

Simply, his friend rolled her eyes at him and continued with her projects. She had been putting off some of her studies for actual sleep and this was the price she had to pay: trapped in the better of the two Libraries with the one person who had made it into her personal space, unscathed as well as...Draco. Her nose wrinkled automatically but that was the only clue to the outside world that she was thinking aloud to herself in her head.
