"Names are challenging." He admitted. "It's easier to remember people if they have something about them that particularly stands out, but even then it's easier to remember that trait than the person. There's probably a hundred people around the weyr to whom I'm 'That guy with the braids.'." He noted this with another of his somewhat cryptic smiles, though the idea didn't seem to bother him. "I try and find ways to memorize names, but that doesn't mean it's always easy. So the fact that you didn't start off by calling me 'Braids' is pretty good." He shrugged, meaning to compliment the boy.
"You really think that plays into it?" He asked, pulling the damp shirt over his head, the cool cloth making him give a quick shiver, but it was, much like the roaring heat of a full overhead sun, something he secretly enjoyed, just because it was so different. "I was really sure I would the very first time I hit the sands and it didn't happen. I guess after that I started wondering if maybe I'd been too overconfident."

Farellen smiled, "Ah well, everyone has something they're remembered for, even if it's something small" he said, smiling wider when Salin did, *wow he has a cute smile* he thought, laying a hand on his shoulder "i try ways to memorise, but i forget those too" he admitted, not sure why he was opening up to Salin, he didnt usually, in fact, it was the first time he'd talked openly about himself withough being forced to.
"of course confidence must play into it, i HAS to" he said, as if trying to cinvince himself as well as Salin now, "i mean, if you shy away from the dragonets, surely they're not going to bond?" He thought about the overconfidence comment "hmm, maybe, well we'll just have to think friendly thoughts and try and assure the Dragonets can hear them and want US as their rider" he said, trying to comb his hair a little so it didn't tangle too much as it dried, which is was doing in the hot Southern sunshine.

"That's definitely a thought." He considered, tying the scarf loosely back around his still wet hair, to keep it out of the way. "Maybe I've been shying away without even thinking about it."
It was a strange thought to admit to but maybe he was. Was he doing to dragons what he did to people, watch them and try and stand behind the strongest party to feel safe. He wouldn't blame a dragon for not wanting to bond with someone who's desire to bond was that ambiguous.
"Maybe it is my own fault." Shards. He hoped he hadn't driven his dragon to someone else. He patted the other boys hand, resisting the urge to tousle his damp hair, given the way he'd reacted to chaos in other forms. "That's rather unfair. I thought I was the good observer."

Farellen shrugged "i guess, we'll see i'll ask the next candidate to Impress!" he said, grinning, putting his hand on Salin's shoulder "we'll Impress, i know we will" he said, giving him a gentle squeeze. Running his hands through his hair, he decided that it was dry enough. Grabbign for his clothes he dressed slowly, then flinched as his jerkin rubbed at his back "i guess i stayed out too long" he shrugged, then regretting the action.

Salin hissed in sympathy, glancing over to peek at sun-reddened skin. "You might want to go see if you can get something to put on that. The temptation to keep your shirt off is just going to make it worse unless you switch to keeping the Wherkeepers company until it heals."
He half joked, though he twisted the corner of his mouth in sympathy instead of a smile.
"Takes a lot more sun for me to burn, but I did once a while ago. I don't envy you." He picked up the rest of his clothing and put it on, bracing a foot on the rock to tighten his sandal straps. He didn't seem to mind the touch, but he didn't do anything about it either.

Farellen grimmaced "Whers? NO WAY" he grumbled, shuddering at the thought of the ugly creatures, "even Flits are better company than those.....rejects" he said, not quite hating Whers, but having NO repsect for the useful, quirky beasts, he was one lad who would never accept Whers as Dragon kin.
"i'd bet you dont burn much" he replied, as if forgetting his comment just a few seconds earlier, "i'll get a drudge to get me some numbweed later" he said, shrugging his hurt off "we'll get worse battling Thread, and .. speaking of which, we have class soon dont we?" he asked, scatterbrained again for the moment.

Salin chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "I haven't met any of them, but I'd rather not. I know they serve a purpose, since they're nocturnal and all, but everything I've heard about them, especially stories about impressing one, makes it sound like hugging a hungry feline might be safer." He agreed.
"And probably, but that doesn't mean it's any more fun now...And yeah, we do. Which is almost a shame because I could use some kitchen chores to help dry this mess."

Farellen chuckled, "maybe the tutor can be convinced to take the class outside?!" he said, "that way your hair can dry out in the sunshine, and if we walk back slowly, there's even longer chance to dry" he suggested, again putting a friendly hand on Salins shoulder, wincing as his shirt rubbed his sunburn.

Since throwing his own arm around the other boy, even in a camaraderie, would only cause him pain, he settled for a pat on the hand and a further grin. "Hm, thats a thought, but it might require some coaxing, and I'm fresh out of elaborate bribes. Worth a shot though. It's such a nice day outside, it would be a shame to spend more of it indoors than necessary."

Farellen slightly gasped, he hadn't expected the pat on the hand from the other, he smiled broadly and laughed "maybe if we protest enough, get some of the other candidates to do the same, we can get moved outside" he said hopefully, wandering off towards the barracks. "we'd better get dressed for the work, i'm not going to class with these soiled clothes" he gestured to the only slightly dirty clothing he wore.

The gasp startled him and he quickly moved his hand, shooting Farellen an alarmed look. "Sorry, didn't hurt you did I?" Sunburns were sharing unpleasant, or he remembered it that way. He'd gotten a -lot- of sun that day.
"A change would be dryer." he conceded. The sun had taken care of a lot of the damp, but not entirely, and he did have to concede it would be a lot more comfortable to be dry, though he wouldn't actually call either of them truly 'soiled'. Class wasn't exactly an event of high formality, requiring immaculate garments.
Also it might tell him a little more about the curious Farellen, and that surely couldn't hurt.

Farellen cleared his throat "er..ah..um... ahahaha no, you didnt hurt the burn" he said smiling, "don't worry about it" he covered his slight embarassment up with a broad grin "hopefully the tutor wont notice my burn, or i'll not be outside" he laughed.
Looking down at his clothes, and at Salins, noting how his were a little cleaner than the older lads, but still they wouldn't do, he couldn't use his rough clothes for class.. that was... well it wasn't worth thinking about, since he was going to change into his classwork clothes. "a change would feel so much better too" he said "race you to the barracks" and he took off, not waiting for the other to realise the race in time.

Again with the racing, although at least this time they only had to worry about running into someone from the Weyr, not face first into a rock... or a feline. He still couldn't quite shake that image out of his mind, damned clever prank that, though he shook his head and bolted after the other boy.
"Oh now you're cheating!" He accused, having admittedly been sort of expecting him to draw another line, not take off like an flit after food.

Farellen laughed, "it's not cheating it's called taking the advantage!" slowing a little to let the other catch him up. Stopping short as a dragon popped out of Between it seemed to hover for a moment before moving towards the weyr "er, Salin, i think that's our cue to get moving" he said, thinking that the dragon's rider was the candidate master, or someone he'd sent to check up on them "i don't think we're late but we'd better change fast" he said.

"Shards, you're probably right." Salin looked chagrined, realizing they must have gotten caught updrifting around on the water and completely lost track of time. They weren't -late- were they? Or not very, he hoped. He really didn't want to be in trouble for soaking up a little sun.
He liked to keep track of the dragons, but he was too busy now to really search his memory for which one it was.
