Reality only seemed to return to Howl as the pressure of Boreas' arms abandoned him. And when reality seemed to return, it came crashing down on the poor fellow.

His eyes blinked open behind the sunglasses and he literally glanced from Boreas to his own lower body (which was mostly covered in sand now), repeating the process a few times. Each time he completed the motion, his face turned a shade darker in red. By the time he was finished drawing his own conclusions about the scenario, he looked as if he had a horrible sunburn. This whole place was beginning to mess with his internal guards, for normally such an embarrassing scenario would not have even received a blush. Perhaps it was the exhaustion that was finally taking its toll.

"...I... apologize for being such an inconvenience, Mr. Boreas." The young man began to try and wriggle his way out of the sand. It was no longer a tight hold like before, for he was able to shift slightly within the millions of grains of sand, but one thing became obvious pretty quickly. Howl was still stuck.

With a heaving sigh, the teal-haired half-a-figure ceased his struggles. "I suspect I will require your assistance if we should like to continue with our travels." With this confession, it sounded as if Howl's pride had taken yet another blow. It probably had something to do with how the Senshi of Winter was continually needing to assist the mere 16 year old lad, and the 16 year old lad, in return, was unable to do anything useful.

From his perch, Boreas couldn't help but laugh a little. Here they were. Two complete strangers, forced to face a nightmarish desert where everything went wrong and after all that, he was watching some poor boy try to wriggle out of the sand. It was adorable and he needed the laugh.

"No problem, Howl. I don't mind."

The smile had remained as he leaned forward and wrapped both arms around his companion once more. This time he was wildly more successful as he was easily able to lift the teal haired boy out of the sand.

"There you go. I hope we have a less eventful journey ahead of us."

The smile faded a bit. He knew that his words weren't going to be fulfilled by this cruel desert. He knew that they had only begun and barely had their foot in the door.

Chin up! Just keep walking forward!

Speaking of ominous signs, He turned his gaze once more to the footprints. The strange hoofed tracks that were somehow able to evade the harsh winds that seemed to fiercely work to erase everything in their path. Boreas couldn't wrap his mind around it. Usually a strategist in tough times, he really didn't have a clear idea of what was going on. He needed more information, more time, more of everything.

"Are you ready to start on the trail again? Would you prefer I carried you?"

The smile remained, but the tone of his voice revealed his increasing dismay at their situation.

Howl's dry lips frowned very slightly. "I fail to see what is particularly humorous about this situation." In all honesty, the frown couldn't stay, and soon enough it was replaced with a neutral expression. It took far too much work to frown under these conditions. As he was lifted out helplessly, he turned away and attempted to add a bit of distance despite their close proximity to each other. The moment he was set down, he tended to his clothing carefully, delicate hands sweeping across the fabric of his pants, trying to get rid of every loose grain of sand from his outfit. It was obvious that the teal-haired lad was particularly meticulous about his appearance. It would explain why his hands looked so lovely, even after being in the desert for endless hours upon hours.

During the whole time that the effeminate one tended to his outfit, he did not speak a single word. Certainly, he kept his ear open and listening (in fact, he had two ears open and listening), but he did not offer to add to the conversation. He rattled the edges of his slacks, and then after a quick inspection of his own hands, he then finally acknowledged Boreas.

"I had no right to snap at you earlier. I apologize for my outburst." Apparently in Howl's mind, his mention of not seeing the humor in their situation was an outburst. "I am indeed ready to continue forward. One does not accomplish anything by idling around."

Howl took a step, and his foot sunk into the sand, but continued to sink until the sand was covering his whole shin.

"Bloody hell!" He attempted to pull back his foot, and when he found himself unable, he uttered "I suspect, if you are not exhausted with this extra burden, I may need to hitch a ride, Mr. Boreas."

Boreas' smile didn't fade, even after Howl's remark. He felt somewhat light-hearted after Howl's descent into the cruel sands of the desert. He couldn't really say why. Maybe because they had overcome so much together or because Boreas had learned to be a hero without his senshi powers or possibly because he was suffering from severe heat exhaustion. Most likely the heat exhaustion.

Boreas carefully watched Howl clean himself up. Oddly, he felt somewhat dirty after watching the display and made sure that he himself was presentable. Presentable for whom you may? Well, if you must know, the owner of that crazy set of tracks, maybe!

He looked again at the path they were to follow. Impending doom was the word any normal person may have chosen to describe their upcoming journey, but not Boreas. His smiled widened and he turned to face Howl.

"It's perfectly alright. We are in a pretty strenuous situation. I don't expect you not to be affected by it."

He gave his companion a big grin before once again hoisted him up. The steed was satisfied with their exchange and again began the descent into Hell.

How come Sailor Boreas, Senshi of Winter, could make it seem so easy to get out from the sand? When Howl tried to get out, the sand felt like solid concrete trapping him in place. Yet, the senshi dressed in all white and ash grays could easily sweep in and just merely pull him out of his problems? With much ease, the barefoot lad took his familiar place and formal stance upon his steed. Appearances were everything, and in all honesty, he had been emasculated enough today. He was not about to add to the notion that Howl Wickham was a weakling by leaning in and clinging to his fur-clad savior. It might have made the ride less bumpy, but it was something the teal-haired lad was willing to risk.

His teal eyes remained focused on the path ahead, keeping a lookout for that speck from before. However, his mind did wander slightly, circling back to the subject of his sand trap encounter. There was the saying that if you struggle, you only make things worse, and that if you do not resist, then it is easier to escape. How would that have worked with the sand of all things? It did make Howl wonder for a mere half a second if Boreas' shoes were magical in some sense, and if Howl being in this crimson skied desert with bare feet put him at a disadvantage. However, the notion was waved off as foolish after half a second had passed.

For a moment, his eyes wandered from their pathway ahead to the fluff upon his companion's shoulder. Casually, he offered a slight compliment to hopefully lift the Sailor Scout's spirits even more.

"I must admit, you have quite a bit of stamina, Mr. Boreas. Is this because of your swimming hobby?" He laughed, though it was a bit weaker than his usual non-heat-exhausted version. "It would make sense if that was the case. Either way, you are a very impressive young man, Mr. Boreas."

Once more, his eyes returned to the pathway ahead. Again, he attempted to locate that speck, even lifting his sunglasses for a moment just to get a better view for a second or two.

After so much walking -- and a bit of drowning -- the two boys eventually got a clearer view of the black speck. Now, closer, it was a brown, lumpish shape of some kind, sierra brown.

Odder, the sand seemed to have been turned weirdly in large shapes, lumps that didn't seem to have been caused by wind. Every so often, the hoofprints bunched up in place, pranced hesitantly sideways, then continued again.

The man's footprints replaced them again, but only for a short time. Well, if a man was carrying a camel, he was bound to get tired.

Come to think of it, so was a man carrying a man. Sweat was pouring off Boreas now, making his clothes cling to his skin even more unbearably, and sand mat against his face. It was so hot. Sometimes the sun seemed to swallow up his eyes, blanking out the world. It was hot.

Howl's compliment brought a smile to Boreas' face. He needed it more than the teal haired boy could ever guess. Sure he was optimistic and brave to an altruistic fault, but one can only do so much on his own before the blaring hot sun causes you to start wondering at which temperature your blood boils. He needed the compliment like the desert needs the rain. Speaking of rain:

Uhh hello desert? Two dried up husks of men wandering you aimlessly? Yeah, thanks for the acknowledgment... Not.

"I appreciate that Howl. To be honest, I think this may make me a better swimmer than the other way around. I usually don't get this hot when I exercise since I'm in a pool. Well, I've actually never been this hot in my life."

He made himself laugh or maybe the heat did. Either way, he found it slightly funny to mock himself. After all, the desert was doing a fine job of that as is, why not jump on the bandwagon?

As the two travelers came closer to the then black now brown speck, Boreas' tracks mimicked in the hoof prints in the sand. Each step closer met with even more hesitation, bordering on fear. Though he tried to be subtle and not stray from the path too much, he couldn't help, but to focus his gaze to the ground below and not acknowledge the foreboding speck ahead. Not to mention the crazy terrain they were now encountering.

"Hmm... I think this is the first time I've seen sand dunes like that out here."

His sunglasses remained lifted, and then rather shortly, they came completely off. At the moment, as the lookout, it seemed to have impeded his ability to judge color correctly, with the lenses being darker. Yes, his beautiful teal eyes would have to risk some form of sunburn at the moment.

There was not much he could really offer in regards to the shape of the dunes. All the younger of the pair could really offer was a simple "Indeed" to his companion's observation.

Though Howl was not fond of swimming, he had heard a fair deal about the sport and knew the basics. He had some more commentary he wanted to share, but he found something else needed addressing first.

"Mr. Boreas... I have been thinking about this for a while, since we have been together on this strange pathway for while to say the least. It might be in both of our interests if you wear my sunglasses. I promise, they are not prescription, but they are UV protected. It might not be much... but I hope it will benefit you for a while." As best he could, without leaning in too close for his own comfort, he held out the sunglasses, squeezing his legs tighter around Boreas for a brief moment so he could snatch the designer frames.

As he waited for them to be taken up, he glanced to the horizon, noting the once black "speck" was now a slightly more earthy tone. It was possible this once "speck" was actually something a bit more notable. At least, more notable than the label "speck" would lead one to believe.

"How have the prints in the sand been? Still the same, or have they changed again?"

Closer, it seemed to be some kind of -- creature, perhaps, something with fur. Not moving.

The hoofprints were scuffled and ruined, here and there, the sand tossed haphazardly.
PostPosted: Sat May 22, 2010 8:31 pm

Chills ran down his spine constantly. He couldn't help but feel slightly nauseous, well he was already so from the heat, but more so now than ever. The muddy speck he had spent so much time and effort to evade was coming to live before his eyes. What he could once ignore as a grain of sand in his eye or a distant mountain had taken shape into something much more strange and frightening. Boreas couldn't place it finger on why he hated that strange creature of a figure.

While distracted by the figure ahead, his hand acted on its own and grabbed the pair of sunglasses that Howl had so graciously offered. Though his zombie like trance was shaken by the sudden erratic change the hoof prints took.

"Oh, sorry Howl, thank you. What do you make of this!?"

He repositioned himself as another series of chills ran down his spine. The disdain evident in his voice.

"It looks like some kind of struggle took place here. I don't know how to take this, honestly."

He was more than uncomfortable, but out of what can only be described as instinct, he didn't show fear. At least he didn't show it as much as could. His body moved toward the mound of fur, but his mind was cowering from the sensation of being in its presence.

Boreas was also exhausted. He stumbled on his feet, having a bit of trouble regaining his footing in all the sand. God, it was hot.

Instantly, as the duo approached the mysterious mound of fur, Boreas felt like a train had hit him. His awkward stance and the continuous barrage of sweat was starting to take a very heavy toll. He peered down at the ground through his companion's sunglasses. He felt weak, not just from the smoldering hot sun or the burning hot sand, but also from everything that had happened.

A deep breath..

You can do this, just a little while longer.

Optimism was becoming obsolete, the glass no longer full of anything, but the sweat Boreas was pouring into the labor of just existing in the harsh climate.

Another deep breath and then the ground he had so anxiously peered at became closer as he sank down onto his knees. His breath harsh and sporadic. Grasping for a reprieve, he barely spoke:

"Looks like I need a minute"

A dried laugh followed the harsh whisper.

Many things were easily messing with Howl's perspective on the current situation. He had not necessarily been the most optimistic of the pair, but now there some sort of creature huddled off in the distance. At least, it seemed that way. Sailor Boreas mentioned a struggle, and as best as Howl could, he glanced to the ground to find that indeed, the prints which had been so uniform during the journey were tossed about chaotically in the sand.

However, the straw that broke the camel's back (figuratively of course) was the obvious slip in the Senshi's step.

"I suggest we stop for a moment so you can rest." In a tone that could be seen more like an authority figure, such as a strict teacher, he instructed "Set me down, Mr. Boreas." Before the Sailor Scout could complain or disagree, Howl easily pushed himself off of his companion's back, standing on the sand without any problem this time.

"If we could get all the excess clothing off of you, I think you would be in better shape, Mr. Boreas. However, I know that might be impossible. Miss Vanadis confided in me about your strange situation dealing with your uniforms." For a moment, he cautiously seemed to fuss with Boreas' fluffy shawl.

"If only, Howl, if only."

His words were still heavy with exhaustion. Boreas figured the cause was the heat, the never ending, ceaseless, degrading, cruel heat. He wanted a moment of night, a moment of cold, dammit! He was the senshi of winter, he wanted winter!

"If only I had my powers. Then I could actually help our situation."

Though he spoke looking in Howl's direction, his eyes inadvertently fixated on the mound of fur that lay before them. He couldn't tell the distance exactly, but in his heart, he felt its presence more than ever.

"I think that strange mound of fur up ahead has something to do with this. From the moment I saw, no, before that, I have had the most horrible feeling inside. Every time I look at that awful thing it gets worse. Something is going terribly wrong."

The explanation left him breathless, he couldn't explain the awful sensation that the strange object caused him to experience, but it's signs were evident just by glancing at Boreas.

Closer still: the footprints seemed to lead up to the creature, except where they were gouged out by rents in the sand dune. There was blood everywhere, making it hard to distinguish any of the details if they didn't approach closely.
