"Whoah!" and over into the water went Ask, Isolde and Oliver. Ask popped to the top and looked for Isolde. She was littler and he really hoped she could swim.

Isolde had floated to the top, although she was clinging to the side of the overturned pedal boat, sputtering and crying. Oliver came up beside her. "Well I wasn't expecting that to happen." He swam with Isolde over to Ask. "Can you swim to the bank or do you need my help?"

"I can swim just fine. Thanks." And he could swim, rather well actually. He reached the dock first and started wringing out his clothes. Upon seeing Isolde still crying he grinned, "Come on Isolde wasn't that fun? Whoosh! And over we went. And then we got to swim like ducks."

Isolde was upset. And she got water up her nose and it made her feel funny. But she tried to stop crying. "Duck's swim on top of the water not underneath," she sniffled. Oliver was swimming back out to bring the boat back towards the shore. "And I didn't have time to hold my breath like at the pool at home." Oliver pulled the boat back into the shallows where he could lever it rightways up. "You better go and get your mom so you can dry off, goodman," he said. "Isolde, I'm afraid we're going to have to pack it in soon. I'll have to get back to the house and change into something dry before I pick your mom and dad up."

"They don't always swim on the top. And yeah I'll go meet up with my Mom then come back with our number. How's that?" Ask patted the top of her head comfortingly.

"Ok. No, wait! I want to come too! I want to say sorry for getting you soggy!" Isolde picked herself up and jogged after Ask, her soggy sneakers squelching along the path as she ran. Ask reached his mother first, but when he walked up to her Isolde ran up and shouted "Mrs. Ask's mom, I'm sorry I got him all soggy it was my fault because he was being so nice and it won't happen again!" Isolde paused then, to consider if she missed anything, then said, "I'm Isolde and I'm gonna be an angel like Ask!"

Shiny looked up from her book when Ask came over all sopping wet. Good thing she'd taught him to swim. When the little girl she saw with him earlier bounced over apologizing Shiny smiled at her. So cute!
"It's quite alright, Ask won't melt from just a bit of water, in fact he tends to dry out when he hasn't had enough." Here Ask frowned as one of his precious "secrets" was exposed. "And it's nice to meet you Isolde, you can call me Ms. Shiny if you like. You look like a little wet angel already."
"Mom, Isolde doesn't know much about being a meta. Can we give her our phone number in case she has questions?" Ask was always on to the business of the minute, and if he got to the point maybe Shiny wouldn't tell more secrets.

Unluckily for Ask, Isolde seemed to have latched on to the idea of drying out and not the idea of getting a phone number. She said, "Thanks, Miss Shiny!" and then thought about Ask drying out. Her eyes went wide. "You would dry out without enough water? Are you like a fish? Or a frog? A frog angel? Or a fish angel? Or a mermaid? What's a boy mermaid called? Or a boy mermaid angel?" She suddenly became concerned. "Do you need to go swimming a lot? You can use my pool to stay wet when it's cold. I don't want you to dry out."

Ask sighed. "I'm not a fish, frog or a mermaid and it'd be 'merman' if I was. I take after an ash tree and they need a wet environment. I'll be fine in the winter, thank you for your offer, but drinking enough water works just fine. Here's our phone number." He said and handed Isolde the slip of paper Shiny had written it down on.

Isolde accepted the paper and gave Ask a damp thank-you hug. Oliver, still sopping wet, came toward the bench carrying the picnic basket. "Come on, Isolde, we ought to head back to the house to dry you off and so I can change before I pick your parents up at the golf club. Good day to you Ask, Ms. Shiny." Oliver tipped his hat to them. "Ok. Bye Ask! Bye Ms. Shiny! Thank you!" Isolde and Oliver turned down the path and started squelching back toward the Bentley.

Shiny blinked as the man tipped his hat to her and wondered just when she'd walked into a Masterpiece Theatre. "Goodbye."
"Bye!" Ask waved as they walked away. Then accompanied his mom home to change.
