"Uh-um... k-kay!" They could go get Tara a snack. Yvette tried to avoid snacking since it usually cost money and she was such a miserably slow eater, that it wasn't worth anybody's time.

With a small shake of her head, she let Tara know "This is all we need... um... if you follow me, we can take care of getting this cut out..." The girl carefully maneuvered so that the pair were heading over to the cutting table. The elderly woman sitting behind the counter asked for how much cloth Yvette wanted, in which the short girl glanced to Tara thoughtfully.

"I... I think 5 yards would be good... um... unlessthat'snotokaywithyou,Tara..." It was her friend's money that was getting spent at this point, not her own. She had no rights making the final decisions on such things that were spending her friend's money.

"Then it's settled!" Tara declared, thrilled that they were almost done with the fabrics part of their outing. "To the, uh... well, I'll just follow you." She did so rather meekly, eying the other fabrics with a mixture of curiosity and scorn. Why would anyone ever make anything out of plaid velvet? Or fleece with pictures of different cuts of meat? Maybe people like Yvette liked looking at the possibilities, but Tara found most of them horrifying.

The lady was nice enough, and Tara waited for Yvette to make the request. She was puzzled when her friend turned back to her for confirmation. "Huh?" How was she supposed to know how much they needed? "Whatever she says," she told the clerk confidently. "She's the expert."

After a moment, she realized something that had been bugging her. "How much is a yard again, anyway?"

The girl shyly peeked at Tara, then stood up on her tiptoes. She leaned up close like a child sharing a secret and gave her a value for the cloth. It wasn't exactly expensive by most standards, but she still felt a little bad that she was essentially spending someone else's money.

With all of that sorted out, the woman set to cutting the fabric. Her wrinkled fingers seemed to delicately make easy work of the task, and soon enough the pair had a small roll of their own cloth. They both easily made their way to the front counter and were rung out, Tara picking up the tab.

"S-so... where do you want to go for food?" Yvette carried the bag with the cloth in it up close against her body, once more peering to the other girl like she was going to swat the idea down (yes, even if it was Tara's own idea).

"Huh?" went Tara, upon hearing Yvette's answer, followed by "ahhh." She was fairly quiet then, by her standards, as the woman cut the cloth and Tara paid for it. She didn't have a whole lot of what could be called disposable income- her family wasn't rich, and her parents has missed a lot of work during her death and subsequent undeath. Still, she felt no remorse whatsoever putting it on her "for emergencies only" credit card. Getting a prom dress was something her mother would have called an emergency, and Tara felt that saving herself from yet more shipping definitely qualified.

As they left the store, Yvette clinging to the cloth like it was a security blanket, Tara looked around lazily. Anything would have been fine. Pizza would have been ideal. "How about there?" she offered, pointing to a small sandwich shop nearby. It looked small, fairly inexpensive (to keep Yvette from balking), and open.

After a moment, she leaned in closer to Yvette. "Thanks for telling me the price, but what I really wanted to know is... how much is a yard? Like, how big is it?" Tara would have been embarrassed about asking, maybe, if she put more stock in the US system of measurements. But most scientists used metric, as it was far more global. Besides, in her mind, the only people who had to worry about yards were seamstresses like Yvette, and football players. Tara was most decidedly neither.

Her eyes followed the pointing finger, eventually finding the proposed sandwich shop. Sandwich shops were safe and usually free of strawberries. Yvette had never heard of strawberry sandwiches before, though, with a bit more thought, she did think of the possibility of strawberry jam or jelly.

"I guess that is fine!"

She began to shuffle her way to their new destination, but soon enough that feeling of someone inside her personal space bubble seemed to make her skin tingle slightly. Her eyes peered to the side a bit, only to find Tara right there by her ear.

"Huh?" Her eyes widened a bit as she tried to think about what her friend was really asking. It took a moment or two, but she then found that missing puzzle piece in her brain. Everything fell into place after that. "Oh, oh! Um... let's see here... a yard is 36 inches, or 3 feet. An inch is about 2.54 centimeters... so it is about 92 centimeters... just short of a meter?" It was quick math, and definitely not perfect.

Relieved to have a destination that did not involve yardage of any kind, Tara started to shuffle towards the sandwich shop, making sure to stay close enough to Yvette to hear the answer. "Ohhhhh," she breathed, as the numbers clicked in her mind. "I guess that makes sense. But then, why don't they just use meters? I mean, I don't expect you to have the answer for that, but I think that having a separate unit of measurement for the US is just plain silly, don't you?"

Tara shrugged the issue off, and waved to the door of the shop. "Want to split one?" she offered. Mostly because she worried Yvette wouldn't eat otherwise, but partly because saving a little money never hurt. "I'm game for anything that isn't spicy, if you are." Maybe they had mozzarella and tomato sandwiches! Wouldn't that be a treat?

Initially, Yvette's slim shoulders rolled to form a shrug, but then she stopped in the middle of it and nodded her head. Sandwich splitting was very cost effective, so the girl could never argue against such. And since Yvette was a painfully slow eater, that meant less food for her to eat, meaning less time they'd be stuck sitting there waiting for the dark-haired girl.

"Oh!" The ever infamous reminder. "No onions in the sandwich if we could though..." The girl made a face that seemed to reflect her utter dislike for the icky flavor that was ONION. The strawberry warning was no longer necessary with Tara. She was a good friend and didn't need a reminder for every outing.

The two girls eventually wandered into the sandwich store, the smell of fresh vegetables filling the air. It definitely seemed more like one of those health food sandwich shops that thrived off of subs. The dark skinned man behind the counter greeted them with a big smile and an easy going "Good afternoon ladies!" Yvette's cheeks grew slightly rosy at being acknowledged and she simply nodded in his direction.

Yvette's change of heart did not go unnoticed. Pleased that she'd found a way to make them both happy, Tara punched the air triumphantly. "See, we're having fun here!" she exclaimed. "Going shopping, splitting a samwich. Girl stuff." She paused. "I think."

Tara's close friends had been few and far between. She had drifted apart from most of her childhood companions when their interests grew too far apart. It was hard to talk about exploring the great beyond when all her friends were suddenly boy-crazy, clothes-crazy, and in her mind, just plain crazy. When she came to Destiny City, she thought she met someone in tune with her particular brand of insanity, only to have her torn away in a cruel Negaverse plot. Tara still wasn't sure what she was more angry with them about- killing her and her comrades, or taking the lives of innocent people (Laney) who had never hurt anyone (Laney) away.

Now, however, Tara was finding that maybe the whole girl thing wasn't as silly as she'd made it out to be. Yvette wasn't really the sort of person to nerd out with her- though she didn't mind Tara's nerding, which meant tons of bonus points for her- but they still had fun. Even the fabric store had been kind of fun, once Tara let her imagination run wild. Just because she was doing things she had once deemed frivolous didn't mean she couldn't do them on her terms, with people who were willing to teach her.

Or else she was just hungry, and her mind was wandering. Either way, Tara decided, it was sandwich time.

"No onion," she agreed, taking off her coat. "You pick a little, I'll pick a little, and we'll have a sandwich fit for a king!"

The only way to get used to compromise was to practice, and this was as good a place to start as any.
