If you had a Pokemon on it you can recover it, look in the instruction manual.

this happened to 2/3 of my pokewalkers! I have all 3 of them safely back now though!

I've never found use in my pokewalker. There's no real need to gain extraneous experience and the pokemon that can be found on it don't really interest me.
