Strange Land follows, humming snatches of song and admiring the walls of the caves. He spends some time in each one, asking questions, and when they reach the next cavern, he tips his head, watching her expression as best as he can. "It must be later than we thought," he answers, peering into the room as best as he can. "You're right. I'm sorry -- I must have delayed us with my questions."
But turning only shows that the rest of the caverns have dimmed as well, making navigation -- difficult, to say the least.

Double-Stripe tosses her head and leads on. She could probably find her way through the caverns in the dark easily id she kept herself calm. But the darkness makes the closed space of the caverns even closer, suffocatingly, panic-inducingly close. She stumbles this way and that, unsure of where she is and which way to go, fear welling up in her belly like icy cold water. She'd gotten lost! Worse, she was lost underground, in the strange, starless dark! Worst yet, she had gotten another lost with her, and had his life in her charge!
She tries not to show her panic, and only succeeds as far as she does because it is abysmally dark; she shakes and quietly pants, murmuring under her breath "I must get us out. It is my fault. I must find the exit!"

Strange Land, for his part, follows her as best as he can, keeping close enough that his shoulder bumps her side. He's close enough to hear snatches of her murmurs. "Wait. Double-Stripe." He trots up alongside her, nuzzling her neck reassuringly. "It's too dark to see. Surely it would be better to wait until morning, when the sun has risen again, and the shadows part."
If they kept going, stumbling around in the darkness, they might wander into parts of the caves that Double-Stripe didn't know how to navigate, even in broad daylight.

She jumps when he nuzzles her, and that combines with the idea of waiting for dawn stop her in her tracks, stunned. "I... I hadn't thought of that. That -" she slumps down to the cavern floor - "That makes sense. I hadn't, I hadn't thought of it, I guess." She looks back up at Strange Land, the soft glow of her eyes the only really certainly visible part of her. "I panicked. I was afraid we wouldn't get out. I brought you here, you know? It's my fault we're lost and it would be my fault if we..." She trailed off.

"It's perfectly understandable. Don't worry -- when dawn comes, we'll be able to find our way back out." He eases down next to her, and carefully noses against her shoulder, the closest part of her to him. "I have faith in you."

"It was just so silly of me," she says, "to being you in here so late... to not think to just wait for light again." She broke off, thinking. Double-Stripe leans into Strange Land's side and heaves a sad little sigh. "Thank you," she concludes, and lays her head down, content for now to sleep next to him.

"Don't worry. We'll be all right." He tips his head over to nuzzle her ear, and to rest his neck across her shoulders. That night, he sleeps lightly, on alert for any sounds of danger -- who knows what threats might lurk in these caves at night?
