I don't think it was just the Stock markets. I believe people were scared that when the dates changes from 1999 (99) to 2000 (00), computers wouldn't recognize the difference between 2000 and 1900 on their dates, causing the need to reboot and rework multiple computers all across the world because of data loss and other stuff due to the date being incorrect on them. Y2K, in a semi-filled nutshell.

The world will end because people think it will. They'll panic, start stockpiling food and money, and the world will basically shut down. No natural disasters or aliens, just humans being humans, and causing their own problems.
