The teal-haired lad was a typically patient young man, but one of thing that did wear on his nerves was the "waiting for tea to cool" thing. A minute passed, and he was already lifting his cup to his mouth so that he could blow over the liquid again, an ample amount of steam still rising from the cup.

As they sat there for a moment or two without any conversation, Howl searched his mind for some sort of topic that would be neutral enough to be discussed without causing another strange silence.

"Are you a regular at that particular pizza place? Or do you have another place you prefer?"

It was indeed a difficult thing to talk to someone who was trying to hide their identity, but at least he made an effort to go about it politely.

The momentary silence that stretched between them did not bother Vanessa, who was the sort of person that could entertain herself. She was a big dreamer with a stout heart and a tongue that liked to run away on her sometimes. If it were not so important to keep her civilian identity a secret, Vanessa probably would have been chatting Howl's ear off about the way Dr. Wes had turned Biology class into an evolved gamed of Marco/Polo the other day. Or maybe she would have told him all about why she'd decided to become a super hero.

When he asked his next question, she opened her mouth to respond accordingly and then paused. It was evident that she'd changed her mind about something.

"Nice try, mister," Super Van chuckled under her breath and waved a knowledgeable finger in Howl's face, to let him know that she was on to him. "I can't answer that right now, but, I'll have you know that I do like pizza. It is nice of you to keep me on my toes, but, trust me- I know what I'm doing."

She didn't.

His cup was once more set down, partially since his tea was not cool enough for him to consume yet, but the other reason was to free up his hands. The moment she managed to catch on, Howl figured it was only proper to acknowledge her efforts. So with two free hands, he lightly clapped the fingers of his right hand across the palm of his left hand. It wasn't a loud sound, but a rather polite gesture to give the young lady a round of applause.

"Most excellent, Miss Van. You seem to be catching on rather quickly." He let out a small chuckle before allowing his hands to fold up at the edge of the table to rest.

Of course, this was not the end of the conversation, and he simply just continued forward, as if the girl had actually answered his question. "Unfortunately, I cannot handle eating pizza... or to be honest, most fast food. The most I can handle at nearly any restaurant is a salad. Grease tends to cause my stomach to tie itself in knots. Even moderate amounts do not agree with me. Salads usually do not have this problem, though at the same time, not all salads are created equal."

He tilted his head in such a fashion that a stray lock of hair fell into his line of vision, which with an elegant motion, was soon rectified. With a smile and a sigh, he mentioned "It would be nice to be able to eat out and not have to worry about such things at times."

The last time Vanessa had excelled in the classroom had been during pre-school, when Mrs. Collins (whom they'd had called Lady Amy) had passed out tropically scented stickers as rewards for good behaviour. Vanessa was the sort of person that flourished under positive recognition, and so it pleased her when Howl clapped. Super Van beamed at her new friend through her sunglasses, positively delighted with him.

"I'm a quick learner," Vanessa informed with a nod of her head. She sounded overly sure of herself, and then listened companionably as Howl told related his stomach issues. There was a sympathetic quirk to her lips.

"That sucks," she declared, and aspired for a moment to become a doctor- so that she could find some cure to his ailment and make it possible for Howl to enjoy all of the greasy pleasures pizza (and other forms of fast food) had to offer. Sometimes, the world was a cruel cruel place. "I've never had any problems like that before. I'll tell you what- from now on, I won't eat pizza without thinking of you. And then I will eat another piece because you can't."

Clearly, she was doing him a favour. Together, they would get back at his digestive track.

"Oh my" he exclaimed at her sympathies. His eyes fell upon his cup of tea for a mere moment, and soon enough it was up in his hands again. He blew over the liquid one more time for good measure and soon enough took a delicate sip. How this young man always made everything look so elegant was probably a puzzle to Super Van.

When his lips parted from his cup, he jokingly replied "Well, I suppose that is my immortality then. To be remembered every time a super hero eats pizza as the lad who cannot eat greasy foods." To ensure there would be no spills on his watch, he set his cup down before allowing himself to laugh. It was a silly notion, and in all honesty, a rather gluttonous one as well. That extra slice of pizza every time she ate pizza in general was probably only going to lead to heart disease in the future.

Of course, the negative observations remained tucked in his mind, his momentary laughter being the only thing to mask it away. His laughter eventually managed to calm down, and at that point, he drew his cup back up to his lips, fingers once more making an effortless motion to lift it up so he could drink. Another sip, and he casually glanced to the girl's tea.

"Miss Van, it is probably safe to drink your tea now, though I apologize about burning your tongue earlier. It probably will not taste the way it was intended to because of that slight injury."

At first, Vanessa hadn't known what to think of Howl and his fancy way of talking. He used big words that she was not used to; big words that she had, undoubtedly, heard before, but never really needed to understand. Nobody she knew talked quite like this. Especially not teenagers.

The smart kids at school didn't make much time for her. Unless she forced herself upon them. This probably had less to do with whether or not smart kids were friendly (some of them had to be) and more to do with the fact that Vanessa would sooner play with the contents of her pencil case than pay attention.

With Howl, she had tangoed on a fence that bordered the fields of frustrated inadequacy and puzzled amusement.

He was nice, so she chose both. Howl was the sort of person she'd like John Jr to spend time with. She laughed loudly along with her new friend, glad Howl was the way that he was, and took a tentative sip from her own mug of tea. This time, it did not burn. She drank a little more.

"You don't need to apologize," she waved his words away with a nonchalant hand, "It wasn't your fault and, I promise, it tastes perfect. Thank you very much."

Vanessa wasn't picky.

"You're very kind, you know."

Not everyone was so patient with her.

"Well, if I am not allowed to apologize, then I offer my sympathies, Miss Van." He was able to keep his cup quite steady in his hand. Perhaps it was the familiarity with tea cups, or perhaps it was due to the fact his sport required a steady hand. Nobody would know, but as he spoke, the tea remained absolutely still in his cup.

Before indulging in his own beverage further, he mentioned "I am glad it tastes okay. I know I personally cannot stand when I burn my tongue. It makes everything taste a bit fuzzy. Though I would imagine, it sounds rather silly to taste a texture rather than a flavor." His cup was lifted to his lips, and with a slight tilt, he drank up another sip. Nothing overly big, just something delicate, and almost pretty in a sense.

The cup was once more carefully pulled away, he replied to her compliment rather modestly. "I was raised in a household where you treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. I find it to be a rather splendid philosophy, even if the world does not work in such manners."

"That's how I was raised too!" It was an enthusiastic declaration, and the wide smile on Super Van's face clearly bespoke her feelings. Vanessa loved having things in common with people. She also liked being different from them, and believed whole-heartedly in the moral lessons children's shows with magical, purple dinosaurs had been teaching for decades. Every person was a very special bunny in their own right. It was just extra-special when the bunnies had grown up on the same diet.

"I wish the world did work that way," she told Howl with a sage nod of her head. The sunglasses slipped down the bridge of her nose just a little, revealing a brief flash of golden eyes, and then Vanessa pushed them back into place. "That's why I decided to become a super hero. I want to help."

Another confident swig of her tea revealed the liquid to have cooled considerably, and Vanessa swished it around in her cheeks for a moment before swallowing. Howl was right. It did taste a little strange with her burnt tongue, but that was her fault, and something that she was used to.

Vanessa burnt herself often. It was something that happened when you liked to play with fireworks- or when you forgot that a glass bowl develops a nasty taste for revenge after being exposed to 5 minutes of a microwave.

Once more it seemed this girl's enthusiasm was foiling any effort of hers to keep herself incognito. She was raised with a family that higher moral standings, which usually meant that the family was not crime oriented. Yet, the nod had managed to gain much more of his attention. He believed in conversations where you look the person in the eye respectfully, so his eyes had been focused on the girl's sunglasses for the most part.

The moment she nodded, he managed to catch a slight glimpse of a golden eye color behind the lenses.

Was he going to point out the fact he now knew her eye color?

Nope.

Was he going to give her a helpful suggestion?

"Miss Van, you might want to see about getting some sort of glasses straps so that you can keep those glasses as tight to your face as possible."

Yes he was. In an overly cool fashion, he took another sip from his cup.

Howl was a genius. Vanessa gaped at her companion like a fish for a moment, stunned by the simplicity of his suggestion, and then, idly wondering why John Jr hadn't thought of that.

"Like a really big elastic?" It would have to be- to fit around her head. Vanessa considered this thoughtfully, and scratched her chin. "That's a really good idea! I'll have to look around my house, but if we don't have any, Big Wi-

She stopped short, cheeks flaming red with frustration, and offered Howl a sheepish smile. It was very obvious that she'd slipped up again. "I mean, I'll find something. I'm sure I will."

It occurred to her that Howl might be a very useful friend to have, and she was a little sad that he could not know her as Vanessa. For now, she had to focus on being Super Van. Which was okay, because she needed practice.

Vanessa could meet him later. She looked forward to it.

((is that a wrap? 8D))
