I tried using that list, it worked out pretty well, kept me busy for 2 hours making my army lists (I use orks and Tau mainly) but i made one big mistake. Remember to save it before you turn off the computer stressed

I do the multiplelists. Between my guard, Marines, and Eldar, I have 16 different lists.

i make my own lists based upon point cost since i already know the basics of each unit and where on the force chart its located. I pick which units i feel like i want to use based upon strategy then widdle them down based upon point cost if i have too many. From there if i need certain wargear i add it in and take away more units if need be to get what is needed.
But thats just me >.> o.O Jon

My army has models assigned permanently to squads with markings painted. It helps in mass melees to keep squads separate.

The original spread sheet post is an interesting idea but sadly it would only slow me down I think.
Through my years of playing 40k I have some how managed to almost memorize every unit I have and that is saying something considering my Eldar force alone is currently tipping over 8,300 points! With my other armies ranging between 2,500points and 6,000 or so.
When it comes to making army lists I don't bother very much any more. For each army I have one dominant 'tournament' list as some would call it where the army has been organized over years of trial and error and has found its perfect balance against most opponents. Those lists sit at 1700 points because those are most common in my area. Stepping down to 1500 and stepping up to 2K are a simple matter of removing or adding a unit.
The only time I have to make a list is when like recently, I call upon my entire Eldar War Host for a massive table at which point I have to cram in all the goodness of my upgrades and chose exactly what each unit will do (Farseer field commanders are fantastic!)
So hey, to get back to the point at hand... I guess everyone has their own methods and while I thank you for sharing your great idea. Sadly it will not help this stubborn old Farseer.

A while back, after a very hard rain caused our basement and a lot of others to flood to the point of the insurance company getting involved, my dad and I were talking about my WH40k collection and how expensive it would be to replace it if it got destroyed.
I didn't know if they'd believe how large my collection was, or how expensive the stuff is. My dad suggested making an inventory list of all my stuff. So I sat down, but couldn't make it to the end of the first shelf of stuff without getting incredibly discouraged from how long it was going to take and having my back hurt from bending over and my hand hurt from writing with a pencil and paper instead of a keyboard.
I was going to ask here for potential solutions for inventorying a large collection of models, but then the possibility of photographs crossed my mind when I remembered how the insurance company had demanded photos of every water-damaged item that had been in the basement.
But then another issue comes up. Apparently they also wanted to know how much was paid for each damaged item. Not how much it would cost to get one nowadays, but how much was paid for it at the time of purchase. My collection has been purchased over the past 10 years, and I don't remember when I bought what. Given the ever-changing prices, some of the models being out of production, and the fact that I don't keep my receipts for very long... I wouldn't know what to tell them.
