The pope shouldn't stand trial in the situations he didn't know about, but with any that he had knowledge of he should definitely be charged. He could provided testimony if nothing else and at least acknowledge what's happened.

As with any management structure, the person over everything has the most to blame if he doesn't get involved with something extremely scandalous or horrible. This, raping and molesting little boys in multiple instances with multiple people, would fall into that category where the Pope better have any and all knowledge that he can gather about what happened, when it happened, etc.

Gosh. Go away for a week and they all start bashing my religion ninja

@Shinzo, WTF. "His followers are saying that the Pope is being controlled by Satan. = " Again. WTF. Would you mind explaining that please? Whose followers? What are you talking about?

As for the Pope going on trial are there accusations that he in particular broke any laws? And is there enough evidence to put him on trial in whatever country those charges were brought up in?

To be perfectly honest this smells like mindless "persecution" of the Church to me but if I'm wrong and he was involved in hurting a child in some way than he should be held accountable for it. What makes this all tricky is that the Church spans across many different countries in the world, which means many different laws and I have no idea where the current Pope resided during all of this mess but the Vatican at the time had its own laws and councils to decide matters such as the accusations against child abuse. I read the document on it and within Vatican city that document stood as the law so he couldn't be prosecuted by following it unless we're talking about the UN getting involved here but at this point I can't see that happening.

@someoneiknow, could you provide us with a source on this since it is your topic?

Disgusting, here's the link
NY Times

I thought in God's kingdom, a sin of that magnitude would at least kick you out of any priesthood. It's not like he can't be a common citzen and still attend mass, but not with these guys who molest innocent children.

I was unaware that debating whether or not a man should go on trial was bashing someone's religion.

Perhaps she meant it as a joke? Tone doesn't often translate through text.

All popes have been leading everyone to hell. It's no surprise he did this. He will suffer for the atrocities he has committed. Catholics need to leave the Whore of Babylon before they burn and aren't taken up for the rapture.

Do you think everyone in this thread has just been debating aspects of Catholicism?

Those who were aren't the ones I was referring to.

I'll have to get back to you on this but the NY Times is a well known far left source, I wouldn't call them balanced by any means. I'll look around later to see what I can dig up though, keep things fair and balanced you know, I'm sure we all want that.

Anyway are we in God's kingdom? I wasn't aware that a place overrun with 'evil' and sin was God's kingdom?

The Priest in question is dead so where he goes is in God's hands now. I don't know if he should have been defrocked or not, he apparently repented so if you believe in the teachings of Christ and the idea of repentance (so basically from a Christian perspective) should he have been taken out of the priesthood? I mean, King David had a man killed so that he could have the mans wife...He remained in God's good grace though he was wrung out for it. God sort of has a history in the bible of choosing people who do atrocious things, even those he chooses as leaders. Why?

Call me a bad Christian if you want but I think the man should have been put somewhere where he couldn't hurt anyone EVER again once he was found out, ANYONE involved absolutely should not have a get out of jail free card but you can't just put anyone through a trial and based on what the NY Times reported on there isn't enough to throw the Pope into the hands of a judge and jury. In any case, innocent until proven guilty. Once proven guilty than they have no place as a free member of society, they lost that right for good in my mind.

Forgive me, but I have to bring up that episode of Spongebob where they all become superheroes and Mr. Krabs only lights up half of the restaurant.
