Oops, sorry, by "droid mechanic" I meant "person who repairs droids" XD she was based on a season-one Trance Gemini from Andromeda in appearance and personality, except being interested in mechanical things instead of biological. Saviour Soul Example: I once had a male Faerie mage with serious Superiority and Napoleon Complexes, who liked to bully the group's young Earth Dragon while constantly trying to take command over those he considered to be beneath him. He was still considered "Good" -- just a bit of an a*****e. neutral So what the heck setting did you do all that in?! Sounds like my kind of place XD

Felixie Farcliff Oops, sorry, by "droid mechanic" I meant "person who repairs droids" XD she was based on a season-one Trance Gemini from Andromeda in appearance and personality, except being interested in mechanical things instead of biological. So what the heck setting did you do all that in?! Sounds like my kind of place XD Oh I see now. A mechanic that works on droids -- not a droid herself. 3nodding And omg Trance was my favorite Andromeda character, if only for being super cute. Like in the episode where the big guy tried to train her to fight and she kept exclaming "Hi-ho!" when she would kick, and annoyed the hell out of him. rofl
Oh that particular setting came from the mind of an old online friend of mine. The RP was held in her Gaia guild. Reborn Novels is what I think it's called. It has been long dead, unfortunately. The setting itself was a fantasy world, full of anthropomorphic animals and talking whales (on top of your typical fantasy creatures), and a massive crack in the primary continent from whence came the great evil what had scarce been heard of save in old, half-forgotten legends.
Cyril was the name of the faerie -- small enough to fit in your pocket and still leave room for your hand. Dar was the adolescent dragon -- a flightless earth-ice halfbreed -- that offered rides and gave takers more than they bargained for. They were both my characters, but Dar was more for group support and comic relief (once drying the group's soaked kitsune hunter by setting the guy on his head and running full tilt through town, inciting terror, lolz, minor property damage and pissing off the guards).
Good times.

Felixie Farcliff Wow, I saw that in my head animated like an episode of Spongebob XD
That's not a bad thing. whee The whole RP was pretty animated with really colorful characters... Except this one guy.
He was all, "I am the darkness that frightens bitty children. I am the taint on the backside of your soul. I am the stain you just can't get out no matter how much OxyClean you use. I am the end that brings new beginnings that I will end, too, one day. I... am the embodiment of Death incarnate, materialized and made manifest. FEEEEARRRR MEEEE!"
Meanwhile, Dar, towering over the antisocial, raven-winged, black-robed fool, was like, "Oooh look at th' wee precious thing. Ah think ah'll coll 'im Coal -- he's black, rough, an' worthless 'til the pressure's on."
No, none of that was actually spoken. This does paint a picture of how the other players and characters felt about him though. It wasn't long until the player started whining to Anne, the GM, about how everybody ignored his Angel/Demon of Deathliness. It never dawned on him that such a character was asking to be avoided by a fun-loving group that was fighting creatures of death and the undead. We carried him with us, but it just made no sense to break bread with an agent of darkness until he had proven his loyalty.
Ever had to deal with a player/character like that?

Saviour Soul Ever had to deal with a player/character like that? Oh sure, we have a player that is well known for almost exclusively playing dark characters that don't mesh with the rest of the party. He played a spellplagued vampire that, no sooner than my cleric had rescued an orphanage full of children from a burning building, then he killed them all when my back was turned. That character eventually succumbed to his alignment and stabbed my cleric in the heart to fulfill his bargain with Mephistoples. He also played a dark-pact warlock with an avatar of a deep space chaos god in his bag of holding, and fed my fighter to it. In Shadowrun, he played an insane sociopathic rigger called that runs over ghouls in his death van for fun, then straps them to the front of the van as a sort of offensive weapon. He didn't manage to kill my shaman but he did launch the ghouls into a Starbucks just to distract the cops... We've been in the same tabletop group for like five years now and he's murdered or been complicit in the death of no less than three of my characters. But, he's so funny about it and always has such a good attitude that it's oddly not usually a problem and has created some of the most memorable moments! A different player on the other hand, who is no longer in the group, also created "problem" characters, and I couldn't stand him. Not only did he have bizarre ideas about how to act towards women (one reason I tended to create characters that had a very obvious excuse not to be interested in men, like the mechaphile droid mechanic, or who weren't conventionally attractive like the troll shaman), but he also put characterization on a pedestal, which isn't normally a problem as long as your character does still have some way of contributing to the success of the group, but if they do _not_, like say they are a magic-user class but has a personality quirk of being terrified of magic, well that might be interesting to read about in a novel, but that is NOT a character you want in your adventuring party! That's much better suited for a less party-oriented game like Vampire: the Masquerade. In D&D or Shadowrun, where the game play is mechanically balanced towards a cohesive fighting group, having one member go out of their way to be useless is worse even than a member that might turn on you one day. The one that might betray you is at least useful _up to that point_, and then the DM takes their character sheet away and they roll up a new, untrustworthy but useful-in-the-constant-combat-encounters character. The useless one doesn't contribute, and doesn't go away, and that would be fine if the player was charming and provided entertainment and flavor to the campaign, and told the DM they wouldn't be involved in fights so the DM can balance enemies for the "real" combat character count... ugh, sorry, I guess I still have some pent-up frustration about that...

Understandable. That would be irritating. Were I the GM of a player who made a useless character, I would talk to her/him in private and [strongly] recommend revisions, being sure to remark about the inevitible end of similar characters in fiction. But that's just me. I'm certain there are other ways to deal with such matters. I just take it that a player is only after the group's food and drink when their choices result in a lazy cheerleader. I suppose that's why I've been embracing GURPS -- a character's combat potential isn't the major make-or-break factor.
I recall a story an old buddy of mine told me. DnD. His group got a new guy one day for the start of a campaign. The guy made a Dwarf Transmuter or Abjurer or Conjurer... Some kind of Wizard. He decided to be the rear guard slash loot mule, so he only had to fight to defend himself from the odd baddy. When their adventure invariably brought them all to a dungeon, the group happened upon a Gelatinous Cube. Things got hairy quick.
See, Mr. Dwarf Wizard/Mule never just had all the loot with him -- he had the only supply of torches and provided the lighting while everyone else fought. You may remember that G-Cubes are a b***h to see in the dark. So when this slimy b*****d (not the Cube) was closest to the only exit, you bet your a** he conjured up a Brick Wall to seal everybody else in with the damn thing and ran away.
The player was never allowed back.
I wasn't even in the group and I was livid. Still am. Griefers bug the crap outta me. I draw a strict distinction between "Playing the game" and "Playing the players", and believe the two should almost never cross in an RPG.
Again, though, that's just me.

Wow, yeah, that would have been an immediate character sheet confiscation for sure in our group too XD wouldn't have been a TPK though, our DM prefers dramatic adventure to three-hour-long character generation sessions, thankfully. It's not a free pass, we still have to come up with a solution and execute it, usually involving the sacrifice of magical equipment, but it is nice to know that a character I've put hard work into making and is heading towards a concrete goal won't be randomly snuffed out. It's more like Gaia RP in that way, where you can't lose a character until you're ready to move on to a new one. That doesn't mean they won't get captured of course... XD GURPS is a system that one member of our group owns some books for and has expressed interest in playing with us, but it looks so complicated... o_o

Okay, so I notice that this hasn't been posted in for a good couple of years, but it still looks like the place to introduce myself, so here I go.
...and now I don't know where to start. sweatdrop
Alright, I'll start with the basics. Derek Winterbourne, at your service. Wizard, wanderer, scholar. I've been away from Gaia for a while (and just went through the character recover process, so I'm going to use this guy, dammit!), but I keep coming back because finding a good roleplaying group is hard. They don't do it on WoW or any of the other MMOs I've tried, and the last RL group I had only met sporadically, and is not pretty well scattered to the four winds. Felixie tells me this place has potential, so here I am.
Um...in case you couldn't tell, I can get a bit longwinded. >_> But I promise I won't god-mode or try and hijack a story.
Y'know, that's probably enough for now. Hope to see you guys in action!

Welcome to the guild, Derek!
And yeah, things are a little dead around here at the moment, which is completely and utterly my fault. sweatdrop Life exploded, and I just failed at keeping up with my online life for quite a while. But I'm working on gluing together the pieces right now, so hopefully things'll get pretty lively again soon. I've got loads of plans, and I'm eager to put them into motion~
I'm glad to see a new face here, though, and I really do hope you'll like it here! Also, really interesting to learn that Felixie has a twin brother, cause I had absolutely no idea! The more you know~ Anyhouse, take a look around and get settled, and don't hesitate to ask any questions, cause I'll be more than happy to answer anything I can.
Now that you're one of us, we'll never let you leave. biggrin

Yay, welcome! It's a small group right now, but talented IMHO 3nodding we are all definitely more interested in spinning an interesting tale than trying to get anything over anybody, so I am sure you'll fit in heart
As for seeing us in action, well, like KJ says, her IRL situation can be a handful, and I am not sure about the availability of the other members, but I for one am unemployed, so you at least have me 24/7/365! (...wait, don't leave~!) seriously though, hanging back for a minute and seeing who all posts in the next day or two is a good idea, so you don't end up trying to interact with someone who isn't around anymore, or has an incompatible schedule, etc emo

I'm pretty sure most of the others pop in rather often. Tams got school and such, but she hangs around Gaia a lot, and she's only got one character right now so I'm sure she'll be keeping up nicely. Vil got work - as in, she tends to work TOO MUCH and needs to learn to take it easy *smacks her* - but she loves RPing a lot so I'm sure she'll keep up as much as she can.
When it all comes down to it, I'm the biggest problem here, because of that annoying health of mine. rofl
I had a rough period, but I'm coming out of it now, and as soon as I get my meds again - I ran out in the middle of things, yay - I think I'll be up and about as normal. Well, as normal as I can get, that is. XD

Welcome, Juliet! You may have noticed it's impossible to subscribe to threads in guilds (a longstanding technical flaw of Gaia, sadly), so I recommend subscribing to this thread and introducing yourself there, as it's the de facto OOC thread for the guild, and where people post to let others know that they took their turn, etc 3nodding
