Nanaki smiled at her, a warmth flickering in his gaze that he had never felt before but he couldn't explain it so he pushed it away. "Night has fallen, it's time for us to get going." he said and then brushed a stick out of her fur with his paw. He turned and headed out into the night, looking up he saw that the moon was nearly full and there were no clouds.
"This is an excellent night for travelling, we'll have plenty of light." he said before he headed over to the river to get a drink for his parched throat and to help him wake up.

"Ya it is so beautiful" she add as Yury looked up at the moon. Then she quickly fallowed Nanaki to the river and drank some water. She also stretched her legs and back out for there trip. "well, i am ready how about you?" she asked.

Nanaki smiled at her and nodded "I am ready as well, we'd best get going, we'll travel until the sun rises and then find a place to rest." he hoped she wouldn't have a problem with his plan but that if she did she would say so.
After stretching once more he began walking at a leisurely pace not wanting to go too fast and have Yury tire out before he had planned to stop.

"That sounds good to me. i bet we can travel a lot faster now to since it is nice and cool. Plus there is water right next to us for a drink if it was needed." Yury commented. She then let out a big yawn that finally got her 100% awake.
"The moon gives us such great light as well" She paused, "That and your tail" she commented in a giggle. Yury walked next to Nanaki side by side as she watched her surroundings. You could hear the frogs crocking and bugs chirping all around them. Fireflies would dance around them and the moons refection in the river gave enough light to see the water was calm. Everything just seemed to have popped out of a book of wonderful things, Nanaki included.

Nanaki listened to her comments and slowly increased his pace as he deciphered her words to mean that she was able to travel at a quicker pace now. He was quite happy to comply, being a seasoned adventurer he was used to travelling long distances quickly and this was only half his normal pace, but he didn't want to push Yury to hard so he said nothing.
As they continued their journey he listened to the sounds of the night, the crashing of the water over small dips and against large boulders, the sound of the crickets chirping, the soft hooting of an owl and the squeaking of mice in the tall grasses. It was all very peaceful and he brushed his tail gently against Yury's side as they walked. "It is a beautiful night."

Yury quickly speeded up to match the speed with Nanaki. She started wondering why he was going faster, she did now if something scared him or they where running slow. Either way she could handle the new speed so she didn't mine. To tell the truth Yury could go faster. She may not travel a lot but she does do her share of running.
"Ya it really is beautiful, i am glade we can share it together." Yury commented. As they continued there travel Yury felt very uneasy. For awhile now she felt like something has been watching them, stalking and waiting. Her ears where up and alert lessening for any noises that didn't seem natural. Her eyes would shift side to side looking for anything that did look right either. Suddenly fog cam rolling over the river and it's bed which added to the eery feeling. It gotten so bad she had a hard time fallowing Nanaki which was only a few feet in front of her. Yury still felt something watching her and she feared it was the monster from the dessert. "Nanaki, i have a bad feeling" she spoke in a wisher.

As the two continued to travel Nanaki was alert for any changes in their surroundings that might indicate trouble. He had a feeling that he was being watched but he shrugged it off, he wasn't afraid of anything out here so why should he act like a pup and jump with fright at every noise and movement of a shadow?
He became more uneasy when the sounds of the night gradually quieted until the only sounds he could hear were the river beside him, his own breath and paw steps, and the breathing and pawsteps of Yury to his right side. Silence was never good, it meant the creatures were hiding from something and Nanaki wasn't quite sure he wanted to find out what that something was.
As they continued to walk he took note of the fog rolling in over the river and he shuddered involuntarily, tonight was turning into quite an unnerving situation, but he had to be brave, for Yury's sake and so when she spoke he chuckled quietly and replied with confidence that he wasn't sure he really felt "Oh, don't worry Yury, everything is fine."

"Ok, if you say so."Yury said in a sign of relief. Maybe she was just being over paranoid and all the=is was just in her head. Yury did feel safer with Nanaki by her side. She knew he would protect her if anything did happen.
It was silents for awhile as they walked next to the river band. Yury started to feel calmer and let her gourd down just a little bit. Unfortunately that was all it took. While Yury was walking a rock came flying at her feet. Yury quickly turned to the direction it came from but it was no use in the fog. When she turned back to continue walking with Nanaki, he was no where to be seen.
Suddenly Yury sees faint glow in the fog and assumes it was Nanaki's tail. She ran to it as fast as she could but when she got there it was just a bunch of fireflies. Yury had no idea where she was and even where Nanaki was. "Nanaki!!!! WHERE ARE YOU!!!" Yury yelled with all her might. Then she felt it again, someone was watching her, waiting for her to get separated from Nanaki. She knew it was very close by hiding in the fog wait for the right moment. "Nanaki" yury said in a whisper as her body frozen in fear.

Nanaki walked closer to her, their fur touching, as he waited for her to come down from her state of alertness that was bordering on fear. When he sensed her breathing and heart beat had evened out and gone back to normal he put a little bit more distance between them, it had felt awkward being so close to a female that was not related to him.
The fog was getting thicker as they continued walking and unfortunately Yury was a very light grey and blended in, he was having quite a bit of difficulty seeing her through the fog and so he scented the air every few minutes to make sure she was close by.
As he scented the air again he noticed that he couldn't smell her anymore. He knew the fog would press down the scents but he should have been able to smell her if she was close by. He whirled around, squinting into the dark fog but he couldn't see her. It was then that he heard her scream and his ears swivelled to that direction, instantly he was running full tilt in her direction.
As he crashed through a particually thick patch of fog he saw her and then, beyond her, a pair of eyes, glinting in the darkness. He moved quickly to stand between her and whatever it was. "Yury, I want you to turn around, and follow my scent back to where I was. Go... now, and quickly. Don't stop until you reach the end of the trail." he spoke quickly, quietly, urgently, willing her to follow his directions and not ask questions.
He was not afraid to fight whatever it was that was hiding in the darkness but he did not want her to be caught up in the middle of the fight where she might get hurt.

Yury was reliefed once she saw Nanaki but his words scared her. She wanted to stay by her side but by the sound of his voice she knew it would be better to do what he asked. "Please be safe," Yury quickly said has she ran away.
Once he got to the end of the scent trail. Yury waited for Nanaki to emerge from the darkness of the the fog. She was beyond worried about him, even though he is a great fighter. "What if he gets hurt, he would be all my fault. I should of stayed closer to him. If something happened i don't know what i would do." yury spoke to herself as tears feel from her eyes.

Nanaki listened to the sound of Yury's quickly retreating pawsteps until he could no longer hear them. Once he was sure she was far enough away he allowed himself to stalk closer to the eyes glinting in the darkness. The same pair of eyes that were also moving closer to him. Suddenly a breeze cleared away some of the fog and he was staring straight into the eyes of another Shakaiyo.
As Nanaki studied the other being he took note of the crazed expression, heavy breathing, and all together disturbed appearance. Standing tall he bared his fangs and snarled menacingly, the flame on his tail blazing brighter and brighter as he worked to intimidate the obviously diseased Shakaiyo.
It seemed as though his posturing was having no effect for the other Shakaiyo only laughed maniacally and moved closer, circling Nanaki slowly. When it was finally close enough Nanaki lunged towards it, nipping at it's flank. "Leave now." he snarled.
As the pain of being bitten registered to the dark black and brown stranger it turned on Nanaki and bared it's fangs, salivating excessively. "Why would I leave? You are trespassing." it explained in a tone that would have sent shivers through any lesser being than Nanaki.
Nanaki was becoming tired of this game and it showed in his stance and the flame that shined like the sun on the tip of his tail. "Then this ends here!" he growled before leaping towards the stanger, sailing over his head and landing behind him. With a quick turn Nanaki had pounced and landed sqarely on the back of the stranger and was raking his claws into his back as well as biting as hard as he could on the back of it's neck.
While the stanger attempted to fling him off Nanaki bit down harder and eventually dropped his opponent to the ground. "In your next life, remember to not pick fights you cannot win." a smirk crossed Nanaki's features as he watched the being slip from life. It disappeared when the stranger spoke his last words "There are others."
Nanaki didn't even have time to move the body away or bury it, the stangers final words sent a chill travelling through him. There were others, and he had sent Yury off alone. He raced towards her, following the trail he had sent her down with as much speed as he could manage, he hoped he wasn't too late.

In the distance Yury could see eyes coming closer. Thinking it was Nanaki she ran as fast of she could to him. But by surprise it wasn't him but a pure black Shakaiyo with scares all over. Yury quickly turned around to ran away but already behind her was a another Shakaiyo with dark brown fur with scares like the first one.
"Looks like we finally found the female, boss will be pleased." The first one spoke. "Yes, he will. Come here girly" The second one snarled. Yury didn't know what to do she was so scared. "Am i going to die?" she thought to herself
"NANAKI!!!" Yury yelled as she tried to run away. But in seconds the first Shakaiyo bit hard on yury's neck and flung her to the ground. Yury's blood flowed down her neck to the ground as she tried to get back up. In the end she couldn't and she clasped down and pasted out. The last thing she was able to do was call Nanaki's name one last time.

Nanaki's heart stopped beating as he appeared on the scene even through he was still moving towards the female whom he called a friend, and, what was that voice in his mind rambling on about... mate? What mate? Nanaki had no mate, he was sure he would remember if he did. Shaking his head to clear away the delusional voice he focused on the situation.
There were two Shakaiyo near Yury and another pair of eyes glinting in the the shadows, it appeared the other being was lighter in color as Nanaki could see the moonlight glimmering in that area. Yury was on the ground... bleeding... that caused a feral snarl to escape him.
After he had scanned the area for any more potential attackers he ran in and jumped on the dark brown Shakaiyo's back, biting down hard on it's neck before he jumped off and whirled to face the black one. "How dare you touch her!" he growled as he swiped massive paws at the face of Yury's attacker, battering the black Shakaiyo and sending him staggering sideways.
The flame on his tail was now burning pure white, and was huge, almost like a torch, even his eye was glowing now as he backed up to stand in front of Yury but in a position so he could still see all three of the potential attackers. Without taking his gaze off of the strangers he brushed his tail, careful to keep the flame off of her fur, against Yury. "Yury. Yury wake up!" he spoke firmly as he continued to watch his opponents.

Yury could feel the warmth of Nanaki's tail and hear his strong firm voice but she couldn't acknowledge it. Her eyes staid close because she didn't have the strength to open them either. Yury was able to let out a small muffle but that was it.
She had no idea what was going on, all her senses seemed to be fuzzy. Yury was completely out of it and was completely helpless.
He she did feel safe now even though she didn't know why. The blood from the back of her neck kept flowing down to the earth in a slower speed. Luckily it wasn't life threatening but still was deep.
Yury finally was able to open her eyes and saw a blurry version of Nanaki. "Nanaki?" Yury said in mummble as a tear feel from her eye. She then quickly fall back into unconsciousness.
The black Shakaiyo started to laugh and he circled Nanaki. "Well, well look who we have here. I am sorry to burst your bubble but our boss as taken an shine to this female. She will soon belong to him. Why don't you just run off and play somewhere. She is just a stranger to you isn't she? Soon she will be mated with boss. I hope you didn't want her for yourself." he mocked him laughing.
"Oh, brother i thing he does have a thing for her. how sweet." the brown one mocked as well. "But we will make sure to kill you before you see her with him"

Note: This post is the result of reading far too many Sesshoumaru x Kagome Inuyasha fanfictions today
Nanaki could smell Yury's blood but he didn't dare turn his back on the attackers to examine the wounds. When she spoke his name it fed his flame of rage and sent him soaring into a level of fury he had never felt before. It seemed as though his whole body was being consumed by the flame on his tail, but it wasn't hurting him at all and he glared at the scum who had dared to hurt a female.
"Yury would never become mate to any Shakaiyo that associated with scum like you." he growled "Besides, even if you take her to your boss, what would he think now that you've hurt his intended? I'm sure he'd do far more than bite you... he'll probably rip you apart. Did you think about that?" he mocked them, laughing at their poor ability to plan things out.
Somewhere inside of him was a more primal being that was desperately trying to get out and avenge Yury for reasons that were unknown to his concious self. However, he had no idea how to let it free, nor even if it was a good idea to do so. Who was to say he would be able to control himself and not hurt Yury in the process of making the strangers regret ever having messed with her?
Then, there was that voice again, inside his mind, it sounded like him, but deeper, and far more feral than he had ever sounded in his life "Let me out! They hurt our mate! We must avenge her! Give me control!"
Great... now he had split personalities? He really must be going crazy, never the less, he replied to his subconcious with thoughts of his own "How am I supposed to do that?! I didn't even know you existed until earlier tonight! And she isn't our mate!"
Once again the voice inside him growled as the black shakaiyo got too close to Yury. "Just stop thinking and use your instincts, if you stop thinking I can take control. And... she is our mate, you just don't know it yet."
Nanaki shook his head, thoroughly confused now but he slowly stopped thinking and just let his body do what came naturally. He remembered lunging at the black Shakaiyo and the taste of blood filling his mouth but then he seemingly blacked out.
When he regained conciousness Yury was beside him, he was laying next to her and licking her wound. He felt a burning pain in his left side and when he looked to see what was causing it there was a fairly deep gash in his shoulder. It looked like it was already starting to heal though and so he did not worry about it, but resumed licking Yury's wound and talking to her, trying to wake her up. He could see a lot of blood on the sand as well as all the tell-tale signs of a fight but his opponents were no where to be seen... save for one... the black Shakaiyo lay motionless quite a distance away beneath a small bush.
In his mind he heard the voice again "The black one is dead for his transgressions against us and our mate and I injured the other two badly, if they live they will not regain use of their limbs anyway and so they are no longer a threat. Make our mate wake up now, she needs water, and food."
After listening to the strange voice Nanaki began nuzzling Yury "Yury, wake up, c'mon we need to get going. Yury.... Yury?" he didn't seem to be getting a response and a whimpering noise came from him that shocked him to the core, the only other time he had made that sounds was when he had returned home to find his whole family slaughtered in their den, it unnerved him and he pawed at his friend hoping beyond hope that she would wake up.
