...Pardon?

"I said I'm here!" The large gangly brown gave himself a shake and reared up on his haunches in an attempt to see his lifemate, but when he wobbled unsteadily he hastily dropped back onto all fours. "What do you want from me, blood?" he demanded in mock annoyance. "Come on now, before I change my mind!"

Reality snapped back in, a little at any rate, and Fealty elbowed his way through the Ghenzan candidates, unaware of their glares. After what seemed like forever, he reached the brown's side and reached out to touch the side of his muzzle, vaguely aware that he was shaking. "You can't do that. It's... kind of a one time deal." He'd been chosen. It was... overwhelming. He could feel humor, and kindness, and more love than he'd believed was possible. He was loved. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt loved.

"Ha, and don't I regret it!" the brown snorted, his eyes whirling brighter green. "You're kind of puny, aren't you?... Oh! Right! We should go and make sure Wilth is okay, he needs looking after, and then I need to eat. C'mon Mine."

"Right," focus, think, this was all real, he needed to react... His lifemate was already moving off towards the massive huddled heap of bronze and... "Hey," he hastened after the dragon, "you didn't tell me your name!"

"What?" the dragonet paused, giving his bonded an incredulous look. "You don't even know my name? Sheesh, why did I pick you? It's Dith, you fool." Snorting again and shaking his head, Dith approached his clutchmate with bright happy eyes, rumbling reassuringly as he did so. "Come on Wilth, it's alright, I'll look after you. We need to get out of the way so the others can find Theirs, and so we can eat! I'm starving, aren't you?" These words were addressed not only to the frightened bronze, but also to Wilth's lifemate, and to his own. It would be kind of rude to exclude them from the conversation, after all.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 06, 2010 12:39 pm

Wilth had felt arms wrap around him and the reassurance of Panata's voice in his ears, and he let out a plantive croon as he moved one of his wings a bit so more of his head was visible. His eyes were still a fierce yellow and he still trembled as if he were shivering against the cold, though the terrifying fear that had gripped them both seemed to be lessening somewhat. It got even better (where it possible) when a recent brown hatching called out to the pair and told them to follow, Panata smiling warmly as he touched Wilth's face with his hand.

"Come on, let's get you fed. I'll be right beside you so nothing is going to come and get you, and you can lean on me if you need to. I will always be here for you."

The words were whispered softly as the boy and his dragon started to follow Fealty (yay!) and Dith (according to Wilth) from the sands and to the food, though as soon as the pair had cleared the ground and Wilth had moved to 'somewhere new' the young boy found himself on the ground with the weight of a dragonet on his back. The impact into the ground had smashed his nose, and he wasn't sure if it was bleeding or not.

No no no no!! Please help me Mine, this is scary!

The bronze pushed his head into Panata's back, as if he wished to climb into him and disappear.

Gah! The daft thing was going to crush Panata at this rate! Oh, they both needed to shorten their names, must remember that... Gah! Right, yes, Panata was being flattened, more important than names!

"Relax, I've got this," Dith turned back from the table of meat with an effort of will; he had been so close and he was so hungry, every instinct told him to feed, but first he had to make sure Wilth and Panata were alright. "Wilth, come on, it's okay, just a bit further to the food, I've been almost right up to it and nothing happened to me... If too many people try to look at you, or if anyone tries to come towards you, I'll put my wings out so they can't see you, and Yours will be right next to you..." Once the bronze let him up, anyway. He hoped the human wasn't hurt... Well he couldn't be badly hurt, or Wilth would be even more distressed.

He could feel every bit of his dragon's hunger, all he wanted to do was drag him off and shove meat into him, along with the herbal mixture all the new hatchlings were being given... But Dith wasn't going to budge until Wilth did. He already knew implicitly that his lifemate had to take care of people, or try to... Was that the only reason the brown had looked to him, because he had been sinking into despair?

"Don't be daft MineLove," Dith didn't turn away from Wilth, but he did send a wave of affection along the link he shared with His. "I was always going to choose you, you just hurried me up, nothing more. Promise."

"Well... So long as you're sure." Smiling faintly, Fealty removed a small shard of shell from his partner's shoulders and tucked it away in his pocket. This all still hadn't quite sunk in, but when it did he knew he was going to be grinning like an idiot. Finally, somebody wanted him.

Two more dragons, these two far superior to the last creature, even if one had impressed to an outsider. She watched them carefully as they walked across the sands, their slimy wings catching the early morning sun. Koriander took a few small steps forward through the crowd and eyed the candidates who had been chosen. They all looked so happy as they fawned over the awkward looking things in front of them. There was love in their eyes… she didn’t understand it, how they could let down their guard like that. On a purely logical level she knew about the bond between a rider and a dragon, but they had seen what had happened to that girl earlier! Shouldn’t they be more cautious? All the little dragons needed to do was nudge them playfully a little too hard, misstep just a smidge, and that would be their riders death. She just couldn’t understand it!

…uuuuh.

Belhec was barely given any time at all to contemplate the bronze having chosen one of the outsiders (and what a handsome bronze he was, but surely he knew who belonged to him, right?) when blue laid himself down at the boy’s feet. About to step about, a soft, gentle voice rolled through his head.

Belhec, your Rayth is here, it said.

Belhec looked down, blinking as he glanced around awkwardly. People seemed to be staring, none to impressed, bu, uh.

Mine?

“Oh, uh. Are you sure?” he finally asked, reaching down to pet the blue regardless. “But, uh, if you are, we should probably get out of the way…”

I suppose… Rayth replied, standing slowly and sticking close to Belhec -B’hec- as they made room for the other boys. Lost in his own little world, the baker barely noticed Shen had Impressed, to a bronze, no less! He called out to the other boy, but he was probably busy with his bronze.

He is bronze, Rayth reminded his rider quietly. They don’t have time for us.

…oh.

Nessa had been awake for a little while when the dragons started humming. She knew that she wasn't technically allowed onto the sands themselves for this Hatching - thanks to just transferring here. But still, it was a Hatching, and she wasn't about to just sit around and miss it totally.

So she had dropped what she was doing and headed for the shore along with everyone else. Now, the slender healer stood on her tiptoes, craning neck to see over the heads of several boys that she'd gotten stuck behind as she tried to see what was going on. So far, it seemed that mostly Bronzes and Browns had hatched, and Impressed fairly quickly ... aside from the fiasco at the very beginning. That was weird, but ... surely it was one-time thing.

Hmm.... seemed about like almost every other Hatching she'd been to. A lot of people who weren't her were going to Impress, then life would go back to normal. As weird as 'normal' was in this place - something she was still getting used to.

The hatching was not going well. While, being Ghenzan, Shen saw a bad hatching as less monumental than the outsiders might, things were nonetheless going poorly enough that he was beginning to wish he'd not followed the unexpected impulse to attend. The loss of the green was unfortunate, even sad, but what really got him was the dragons that began impressing outside of Ghenza. What was going on?

Those were their dragons. Their clutch for their people! He didn't hate the outsiders, but in the same way he wouldn't let them steal from him, he wasn't exactly pleased to see dragons begin to follow High Reaches blood. There was nothing wrong with good Ghenzan stock and the dragons should know that.

When Belhec impressed at his side, the pain of losing the bronze eased a bit, only to be sharpened as another (admittedly skittish) bronze impressed to an outsider. Oh, so they'd leave the smaller dragons and take the big ones? Would they take the queen?

The next bronze to hatch was a beauty, and Shen's gaze followed it urgently, willing it to impress among their own. The dragon seemed hesitant to pick and Shen's anxiety only increased. Indeed, it continued to do so until about the time said dragon's head was planted firmly in his stomach. Stick figure that he was, he immediately collapsed, falling on his butt. Ouch. Why hadn't he gotten out of--

Your posture is horrible, Shenmine

His head was singing. The voice that had suddenly entered his thoughts was firm but reassuring, the scolding followed by such a wave of affection that Shen was lost to it.

"You don't. Not me. I'll mess up."

No. I believe in you. I will take care of you. You will do a good job, with my help. Now, get up and come with your Bajenth

So, Shen did. Never let it be said that he wasn't obedient.

As they reached where the other dragons were gathering to eat, Bajenth's interest shifted to the other dragons leaving the sands, Rayth, have they fed you? If they are ignoring you, I will get you some food. I will not ignore you. Wilth, do not worry, I am here now. No one will hurt you, so long as I am here.

Tialzieth had taken some part of the meal offered him and had his mouth full of meat and herb as Hivex stood silently by his side, watching with a sort of fond quirk to his lip while he rubbed the bronze's shoulder. He could feel eyes on him and when he lifted his gaze, he met the disapproving frowns with an impassive gaze that challenged them to say anything. Tialzieth was his, thanks, and very much loved for that.

Even if the silly bronze was busy watching and eating at the same time.

Mine, look at that! There's so many bronzes! And that one, Wilth? He's so afraid. I should help him... But, oh! The others are helping him. He craned his neck and swallowed his food before he bugled loud enough to draw attention, Wiilth! I am here! There is good food~ Come to us~

Tilting his head to the side, he regarded His for a moment, Hivexmine! I should tell you about what happened before. Were you there, in the Before? Many hands touched my egg... they were all different. Many wanted, but many were also just there... its hard to see them, then. Don't you think? It's hard to see someone who is not interested. This would all make an excellent story, he was sure. All of the big dragons, his brothers, were hatching and Impressing and helping each other. Maybe they'd come talk to him after too? When they came to the food that was.

Right, food.

He dipped his head down and tore away some more meat, exuberantly enjoying his first meal. Hivex relaxed when the commentary came to an end, having been distracted by his talkative dragon - a dragon who did not seem to have a problem with broadcasting to those nearby in addition to His. They were all privy to the bronze's opinions it seemed.

You can tell me later, okay? After whatever's supposed to follow this. And shhh, keep it down. You're being loud. He replied silently, easily lapsing into this speaking without words thing. It felt, well, right. He didn't have to waste words and he knew beyond a doubt that his dragon was listening intently to every word he sent.

I'm being loud? Oh! Sorry, Hivexmine. Yours is just so excited... I have much to tell you. And you have much to tell me. You are not from here, right? Everyone looks at us strangely. Tell me of your home, please? The dragon lifted his head again, eyes whirling bright hues of blue and green as he thumped his tail against the ground and somehow managed to hum while chewing.

Hivex actually verbally laughed at that, a smile playing across his normally serious features and he nodded, I will, mine. Right after you tell me your stories. Agreed?

The hatchling bobbed his head vigorously.

Hivex then turned back to the hatching and inclined his head to those who were approaching. It was... a bitter sweet hatching. At least, it had to be fort he Ghenzans. A green had gone screaming Between, and two bronzes and a brown had Impressed to 'Outsiders', one of which seemed like a coward. His gaze slid to the Weyrwoman then. She must be dissapointed with this batch of eggs so far... even though five healthy, large hatchlings was something to be proud of.

To be honest, the whole business-like feel to this event bothered the new rider. This should be a time of celebration - it had been at his home Weyr. Here... it seemed like just another day.

Belhec...no, it was B'hec now, or rather, he was B'hec. B'hec. B'hec, rider of blue Rayth. Blue Rayth... The young man sighed happily, glancing down at the dragon. The freckled blue had resolved himself to settling down upon his rider's feet as soon as they'd moved away from all the commotion, lest they be in the way of the bronzes and browns. Those boys were bigger and better and far be it from Rayth (or B'hec for that matter, thank you very much!) to stand between any dragon and his rider.

Not entirely sure what to do to soothe the blue, B'hec just stood around awkwardly, frowning as the outsiders managed to wrack up more riders than his fellow Ghenzans. It didn't exactly seem fair, the Baker thought, that they extended their homes and hospitality, and in return, these new comers complained about being over-worked and turned around to take their dragons. At least they'd stay, though, right? They couldn't actually take their dragons away from here! This was there...home...

Mine. Mine, he is talking to me? What do I do? that soft, jingling interrupted his thoughts, his hatchling staring up at him with worry in his eyes. When B'hec failed to provide an answer, the blue got to his feet and pressed his body to his bonded, shuffling his wings awkwardly, ducking his head and trying to avoid the bronze's gaze. He's talking to me...

"...so, uh. Say something back, I guess," B'hec replied, reaching down to rub Rayth's headknobs gently, glancing over at the nearby bronzes. "Oh! That's Shen's bronze! I'm sure it will be fine, Rayth."

He is a bronze, Rayth replied, his tail wrapping around his boy's leg loosely. I am just Rayth.

The Guardian Egg and Hissing Egg both began to shake. From the former a nose broke through the shell, and soon, out wiggled a brown dragonet. He turned to peer at the other egg, eyes whirling an ominous white in preparation of danger he felt was to come.

At the gentle nudging of his clutchmates, a nice brown and a concerned bronze, Wilth slowly moved himself off his rider without even thinking in the fact how he may have hurt the boy now. It wasn't that he was doing it to be careless, it was probably that he was more unaware of his large size and the effect such girth would have on a small boy, though his plantive croons of affection and fear indicated that the latter of the choices was more true.

Sorry Mine! I'm so sorry! I just, protect me please with Dith and Banjeth! So scary.

Panata slowly got to his feet and covered his nose with his hand, ignoring the pain that issued from it and the little trickles of red blood that streamed down his chin. He smelt like vomit and was covered in blood, but he was still happier than any other time he'd ever been in his life. There was someone depending on him now, he couldn't back down and get away with this. He couldn't cry over the pain anymore either, now even stronger since he was an outsider who had taken a Ghenzan dragon - one of their Bronzes.

"It's okay, I'm still right here. I'll protect you from anything and everything, so don't -"

Panata's sentence was cut off as the little Bronze shoved his head against the boy's torso and almost nearly knocked him down again, a wave of terror erupting shortly after the Brown egg had come to hatch. They weren't close enough that it mattered, but it still could be seen from their point.

So scary! There's more coming!

Helios watched as the brown found its partner. He was pleased as punch that the dragons seemed to be getting along quickly to find their lifemates. As a dragonhealer in training that was far more important than who they impressed to. While he bobbed from foot to food on the sands trying to keep himself entertained, he tried to take mental notes of each of the dragons just in case is father might quiz him later about what he saw. If anything his old man was a stickler for details.

This hatching was far from boring but he wasn't used to standing in one place for too long and he still couldn't find his brother in the crowd but he knew Jetta had to be somewhere close by. Probably wondering the same thing about him too. Knowing his luck! Helios tapped a small stone with is foot as he considered what he would need to do after the hatching for his craft. Some of this was becoming routine and he had a feeling his father would be pleased to know that this time the information stuck. Maybe it was because Jetta had already worked it out and he had listened to his brother more than once repeat the list.

He yawned just a little as he realized that they were only half way through this hatching but his day had hardly begun. That was when he groaned realizing he hadn't eaten breakfast yet! And after the hatching goodness knows his father wouldn't let them have any time!

Then his eyes flicked forward watching the other eggs shake just a little. Well at least soon they would be fed. Lucky Dragons.

Jericho watched, bemused at the antics of Panata's new lifemate. He seemed a little...flighty. Well, surely he would calm down here soon enough before he managed to knock the boy head over heels again. Luckily, Panata didn't seem injured.
The tall man turned his gaze back to the sands as more eggs began to shake. One hatched and another brown was born into the world and quickly impressed.

"Yes... We should get moving." Dith bobbed his head, a faint feeling of unease dulling the green of his eyes a little. "Food." That thought returned, more urgent than ever, changing his eyes to a bright red. "Let's all just head over there, right?" he suggested to the dragonets and new riders around him; food, and out of the way, sounded smart to him.

"Right," Fealty agreed with his lifemate, glancing over his shoulder as well. He wasn't sure what had purturbed his lifemate... oh, a new brown had hatched, and his eyes were white. Danger? What danger? Well, best just to move along and keep out of it he supposed, whatever happened behind him wasn't really a concern right now, all that mattered was the lanky dragonet beside him.

"Nice to know I'm apprecaited at least," the dark brown rumbled deep in his chest and nudged his bondmate as they reached the meat at long last. "Thanks," he said to the riders watching over the table of food and herbal mix, "I was about ready to chew my own foot off!" But now Fealty was passing him choice chunks of flesh to gulp down, and the urgency of his hunger eased, dulling the red in his eyes and allowing streaks and whirls or green to show through again. "It's all really nice Wilth," he told the big bronze, "nothing here will be too big for you to swallow..." He wanted to keep an eye on what was happening behind him, but he wanted to eat too. "You look over that way, towards the eggs," he instructed his bondmate; Bisoitcoth was uneasy for a reason, and he wanted to know what that reason was.

The dragon within the Hissing Egg lived up to the title. As soon as the blue was able, he burst forth and hissed, snarled and snapped at every single outsider he could see. Outrage was putting it lightly, as was calling him scary. He was downright terrifying; enough that even some of his own people cowered away from him.

The blue screeched:
