I play oboe as well and have braces, and honestly, its not that bad. I was really worried when I first got them on, but I had no problems.

i have braces and play the clarinet. i only had trouble when i first got them on because they killed, and cut my cheeks. after around 2 weeks i was over it and i can play just as well.
braces dont make much difference. they didnt to me anyways. i also know an oboe player with braces, and she says there wasnt much difference at all.

my strongest point has been my range. as soon as i got braces, it went down alot. my tone has also been shot down.
hopefully they will be off before next year's festival.

I had braces for three years; my second through fourth year of playing. I didn't much like it, but looking back, it probably made me a better player, as it forced me to not use so much pressure.

I cant play a high F up which is odd since my flute teacher says I crisp sounds up to E and then I flail. Darn braces and flute.

I'm currently learning trumpet and I have braces. For me, they cut into my lips and there's more spit than I would like, but it still works. I'm getting Morgan Bumpers, though, so I don't have my brances cutting in. I'm getting used to it right now, and it's really not that bad.

I didn't get braces partly because of my horn but more because I kinda secretly liked my (slightly) squint teeth. Best decision I ever made. I love my teeth being exactly how they are. My teeth never caused any problems and it's not noticable with my mouth closed. They are unique and me. Too many people have straight teeth nowadays, it's getting boring. mrgreen They are nice squint though, if it's ugly squint then still get the braces.

I have braces and I play the flute. It's not too bad. The bottom braces kind of messed me up, and if the wire is too long in the back it hurts like all HELL, but I suck just as much as I ever did with the braces.

I had braces, it hurt for a while (especially when people don't know how fragile the trombone slide is), but I got used to the pain.

I got my braces on in sixth grade, which is when I began playing sax. I never had a problem at all, and I didn't feel a difference once I got them off in eighth grade. I think it just varies from person to person.

I finally got the Morgan Bumpers! They're great for everyday use, but I, personally, can't play my trumpet with them in.

Well, I'm getting braces in may, so I won't be able to tell you until then. My best friend though, she plays trumpet, actually learned how to play with the braces on, and she never had any real problems. As she got better, they started to cut her lips a little bit, but she never had to take even one day off from band because of them. Now that they're off, she's not gotten any better or worse, but that's just her. -shrugs- Anyway, you should probably get some type of gaurd for you teeth, even if it's only wax, for a while at first. You should get caluses inside your mouth if you practice regularly enough. It will hurt, but it's better than drawing it out the entire duration of the braces.

It depends on the person and what they play. both my lips tore and I kept having to get new reeds because I got blood on them and at the price of oboe reeds here, that cost a lot! I'm fine with it now, but my oboe-playing friend has no problem with it. wait a while after you get them because it hurts badly if you don't. stupid braces domokun
