Rishy sighed and followed Nightling to the pool. she peered in at her reflexion. before her stood a foal who was young in body, but whos spirit was worn with the worldly things. even though a foal she held herself like an adult. her body was thin but that did not distract from the fire in her eyes. she looked like a crazed animal. half of her wanted to scream and angrily slash away the image, while the other half liked what she saw. a thought came to her mind that gave her hope.
"Nightling, its not wrong to survive...so i survive by killing...so im not wrong im just following my nature. ive seen Kalona that eat grass even though it makes them sick, just because they dont want to kill. that to me is an odd sight. it would be odd for a skinwalker to not hunt and claim bounderies. i think i know what i want to be."
Rishy looked at her reflextion deeper. this time she saw her sharp claws, and her sharp teeth. deadly if used right, but its not wrong to use them. Rishy looked up at nightling with a half smile of acceptance. "im a hunter. i eat because i must, and i kill to protect my hunting grounds. its not wrong, thats just what i am."

Nightling watched Rishy more then the water now as the skinwalker foal looked at her reflection more deeply then before. Side stepping a little she lowered her head to drink from the pond, her horn giving off a soft luminescent glow over the water and reflecting off the scales of the fish that laid beneath the surface. Ears perking up a little she pulled back and gave a smile. "You are a hunter, I see a mighty hunter in you and a great defender to the things close to you." Nightling added,
"So what will you hunt? Just about anything?" The question wasn't really a serious one, but one she thought had to be asked. She just didn't want to be the one that passed onto Rishy's domain and find herself in heaps of trouble. Blue eyes looked back to the brightening skies, it would soon be daylight and the heat would climb. She would surely be making another run to the forests below for something. "Sun's coming up, doesn't seem like the night should be over already."

"it was a rough night." Rishy left the hunter question hanging as she continued to stare at the pond. she already knew what kind of hunter she was, because she has hunted many times before. she again thought of the animals she killed for fun. but that was not hunting. Rishy rethought the question...what kind of hunter will i be...Nightling deserved and answer, but it was going to be hard to tell her the truth. it was hard even for Rishy to admit the truth.
"I hunt to live, to protect, and to defend. im not quite sure what that means yet...but i do know that in order to live i need food, and for food i will need to hunt and to have hunting grounds. there is an instinct to protect that comes with owning a home...so if someone is in my home i will drive them out..." she paused and looked at Nightling. "wouldnt you protect your cave if a kalona tried to take it from you?"

Nightling listened the the young skinwalker her eyes ever on the sky watching the colors start to change and lighten. The stars that twinkled and faded from the sky and a golden/pink colored edged the clouds that had gathered over head. An ear twitched as Rishy asked if Nightling would protect her home and cave if some danger came into it. Well there was a question, she certainly would, she bet even her mate would as well.
"course, this is my home, yours too if you want it to be. I would fight with all I had to safe guard the cave and all that is within it." she answered turning her pale gaze towards Rishy. "When you find a place to live, a good hunting grounds. That you will know who means harm and who doesn't." Nuzzling the foal she looked towards the cave. "Think you could sleep a while longer? When you wake I will have something better for you to eat then a small frog."
Letting her lion like tail flick behind her, Nightling watched Rishy fondly as if the skinwalker had been one of her own. Then again, that's how she was with all foals she came across. Loving them all, equally, even if some were her favorites.

Rishy nodded and turned over to sleep. she was afraid of what she might dream, but her weariness would soon win over that fear. she liked what nightling had said about protecting the cave. she pictured nightling standing by the entrance reared up, lightening striking behind her that matched the ferocity in her eyes. below her was a hoard of kalona charging to take over the cave. Nightling was strong though, stronger than them all. she fought down every last one and walked away without a scratch. Rishy smiled as her day dream drifted into a real dream of fighting, victory and glory.
throughout the dream Rishy would see flashes of black in the mix of kalona that she was fighting. it was a ghostly shadow that lingered at the corner of her vision only to dissapere when she looked at it. as she fought her way through the dream she began to notice a slight difference. everyonce and a while there would be a uni, or a normal soquili mixed in with the kalona. the battles got fearcer. she looked around and nightling was no were to be seen. opponents got harder, but she was a good fighter. soon she could not keep track of how many were beaten, and no longer noticed who she was fighting. each opponent and just another person to slay. at the end of her dream, when the opponents stopped coming, she looked back at her victory. but it was not a victory. she had lost herself in all the fighting. there at her feet were foals, just about her age. nightling stood across from her tears coming down her eyes. how could this have happened?
Rishy tossed and turned in her sleep racked with guilt, she was sweating in frustration at having lost control. her teeth were grinding at resisting the urge to eat her kill. in her dream the shadowy figure came up behind nightling, and took her down in one swift movement. nightling fell, and behind her stood a black cat with a pumpkin tied around its neck. Rishy screamed and awoke with a start. she had been a sleep for a long time, but it hardly felt like five minutes. she was breathing hard, relieved that it was a dream, but scared at the fact that it was her dream.

Having watched Rishy drift off to sleep, she headed out of the cave and down into the forest below. With the forest stirring, she was sure to find something else around then small stuff. Poking around, she came across a family of rabbits. The little ones barely big enough to be out of the burrow. The mother was nibbling on grass near by. Nah, she wouldn't kill a mother with little ones, turning away from them she pursued the male rabbit. Those weren't overly important in the family besides mating. Saying something silently to herself, Nightling killed the rabbit. Picking the meal up by the hind legs, she headed back to home. Crossing through the tunnel path, into the valley she arrived back to the cave. Laying the meal just outside,
Ducking her head to get inside, she looked as Rishy as she awoke with a start. Ears flicking a little, Nightling stepped over to her. "Another bad dream?" she asked, though from the look on Rishy's face it was. "I brought you back a nice fat rabbit. Seems that the forest is starting to be teeming with them." Looking back towards the cave entrance and the rabbit, Nightling headed towards her own bed to rest. It had been a long day and night. She needed some sleep of her own in order to keep going. Leaving Rishy to herself, Nightling drifted into a dreamless sleep.

*fast-forward 4 mounts*
Rishy awoke with a start. the dream she had just been having was fresh in her memory. that stupid black cat just would not leave her alone. she had tried to chase it this time, but it was too fast. Rishy looked over to nightling who was sleeping on the other side of the cave. she had so much to repay to that kind uni. for 4 months nightling had been watching and caring for Rishy, even bringing her food when rishy was too sick to hunt herself. Rishy stood up silently and went to the entrance of the cave were three rabbits lay waiting for her. she ate them quickly and then proceeded to bury the bones so that nightling would not have to. her stomach grumbled in complaint of the small meal, for she had grown much over the four months. she was just barely taller than nightling now.
she walked back to her bed, which nighling had been adding to to accommodate rishy's size, and lay back down. she was not tired though, so she just sat and watched her friend sleep. the unicorn had been like a mother to her. only one other had treated her with such kindness and understanding, but that was a foal who did not know much of the world. Rishy wished she could stay in the protection and comfort of this cave forever, but she knew that her time was coming to leave. it was not fair for her to make nightling care for her when she was no longer sick. her sickness had passed last week, and she was very grateful for nightlings help and healing, but she just could not get herself to leave. she watched nightling sleep, her orange eyes unmoving.

Nightling stirred in what sleep she had been enjoying. It had been a short four months, though it might have seemed longer to others, since she had taken little Rishy in. Though Rishy wasn't so little now. She was a fully grown adult now and knew her own paths in life. Nightling's role might soon be ending, though she knew that someday she would have to let the skinwalker go. She was a predator, as everyone had told her months back when she first took her in. Not that Nightling cared, as she told all the stuffed up mares around where she grazed.
Pale eyes fluttered open, before closing once again. With an ear twitch, she rolled over onto her belly having heard someone eating outside the cave. Seemed only reasonable since she had left a small meager meal out there for Rishy after all. With eyes fluttering again, this time they opened unfocused she looked over towards Rishy. "Enjoy the snack I left you?" she asked shaking her head, braided mane slapping against her dark neck. "I know it wasn't much, but seems that times are changing and food is getting harder to find in places."
Coaxing herself to her hooves, it was another day, though she had only a few hours sleep and could have used a few more. Nightling was up and ready to go, even if it wasn't so far. Today she wasn't leaving the valley, too much to do, cleaning mostly though. Stepping over to Rishy she nuzzled against the mare's neck before passing by and heading out into the light. Letting it bath over her black and pale marked coat. Letting the warmth seep into her skin and deep into her bones, Nightling headed for the pond to get a drink.

Rishy got to her feet and followed Nightling to the river. this wasent going to be easy for her to say, but it was time for her to go. she went to the pond and took a drink of the water. her tongue flickering in and out as she drank, like how a cat would drink milk. when finished drinking she stayed motionless by the waters edge, watching the ripples that her tongue had made fade as they reached the other side of the pond. she pondered her life up till this point. her arival into a strange land with no guidance but a strange man telling her that her job was to kill. her attempts at killing as a child, but finding no joy in it. her meetings with different soquili, some telling her that she was meant to kill, others telling her that she had a choice. the hatred she had cultivated towards herself. she had been lost and confused, she had plenty of hate, but did not know what it was for. then Nightling came into her life. the mare raised her, and healed her. Nightling gave her direction and a purpose.
Rishy turned her head and looked at Nightling. this mare before her was perfect, this mare could do no wrong in her eyes. her claws kneaded the earth as she found the words she wanted to say. "Nightling, i have grown much. you can no longer sustain me with enough food. i think it is time that i leave to survive on my own." she paused for a moment. the words that she wanted to say escaped her. there was just so much gratitude for this mare that Rishy could not fit it all into simple words. "i, well...thankyou." she nodded and then turned her attention back to the water.

Nightling watched the older skinwalker, remembering the sickly foal she had brought back not that long ago. Now she was a beautiful young mare ready to take on the world anew and without fear. She could feel the tears of pride welling up inside her as she nodded to Rishy as she mentioned leaving. "As is should be. You have grown so much since coming here. Just remember that you can come back when ever you want to, my home is yours. No matter what." Nightling stepped closer to the mare and nuzzled agaisnt her with a smile.
"Let the spirits carry you to happiness. i will always be proud of you, Rishy. You are like the daughter I have yet to have and when I do have daughters. I can only hope that they are as strong as you are." Nightling stepped back tow watch Rishy depart from the valley, sad to see the skinwalker leave, but glad that she had a chance to live. Turning to her quiet home, it felt, lonely. But Nightling knew that soon other small hooves would fill its walls, for a time at least.
